Cal arts means style that is derivative of something older but made without an understanding of what it was. Like a proper cartoonist will draw a face because it is a caricature of certain proportions, expressions, and the calart will copy it because they think that is what you do for a cartoon. The proper cartoonist will innovate by creating new caricatures and the cal arts will innovate by mixing more faces he did not understand together.

That is what John K uses the word term to mean. The few sentences above are more informative than entire threads dedicated to the word which never use the word with any sort of consistency or clarity.

What you showed is not cal-arts or the anti-thesis. It's just faces that lack distinction. As a result they are not interesting.

Did you mis the word "beanmouth"?

        That’s a more appropriate term
In fact from the student films I’ve seen, very few draw in that style.
I have my own term for it:
        >The Stock California TV Style
Because it’s a style that has become so standard in tv shows produced in LA. Although maybe I should call it the “2010s Style”. Because it was a style that rose to popularity as soon as the 2010s decade begin (Adventure Time began in 2010) and it now seems likes it’s losing popularity, and going out like a wet fart, and being replaced by other bland styles (there’s many in the US Animation industry) like the style used on Hailey. I’ve also noticed that the angular Y2K style seems to be coming back

That’s not what John K meant at all when he coined the term.
To him Cal-Arts Style was synonymous with the Disney style, in particular the way in which Milt Kahl drew, the superstar artist of Disney’s. And he was right; Disney created CalArts, and many of his artists taught there, as a result the Disney house style became very dominant at the studio. Yet the Disney artist benefited from this, all these years later guys like Glenn Keane are still some of the best in the game. What’s ironic about John K’s term is how little it makes sense anymore. The Disney style (in particular the Milt Kahl style) isn’t as dominant there anymore, even BEFORE he coined the term, the stupid term had already lost its use, as beginning in the late 80s you had young artists going there and developing a less Disney-ish and more angular UPA inspired style, as was the case with guys like Craig McCracken, Rob Renzetti, and Genndy Tartakovsky. You could actually make the argument that the famous flat and angular style that was all the rage in the Y2K period got its start there.
Nowadays, the kids in the school hardly draw like Milt Kahl, many are drawing and animating in the anime style, which I once heard was frowned upon at CalArts

Bruh look at the incredibly worm reception people had to the Ghost and Molly McGee’s artsyle. People liked it because it was expressive, appealing, cartoony and cute.
This legit looks like video game NPCs or corporate drawings you find on Snapchat or other social media sites

It's stiff as hell, that's the issue, especially since it's a Disney show. They HAVE the budget to give it nice animation, they just didn't
If it were animated nicely, there wouldn't be an issue.

Somethings off about this art style, so much that it's repulsive to me.
I think it's the stiffness, weirdly realistic body proportions and ugly noses.

Hailey's art style wasn't the problem, admittedly. Not sure what the people going on about "bitmojis" are talking about but I guess I'm not zoom zoom enough to catch the reference.

The problem with Hailey is the animation sucks and the action sequences are flat and pitiful. Like when Hailey fights that giant crab bot, it's the most awkward and unthreatening battle I've ever seen in a cartoon. Having an "action/comedy" cartoon but the comedy isn't really that funny (sometimes, but for every good joke there is like 3 cringe ones) and the action is worse than early 2000s newgrounds flash shit.
