They've tried that. It doesn't work. Shared universe superheroes sell the best. Everything else sells significantly less and that includes other publishers. That's why the most popular non-Big 2 stuff are about superheroes and those have created their own universes.
Crossovers sell well better than shared universe, because it feels more special.

Anyone that reads comics knows that's bullshit. Marvel put out a tennis comic. DC has been putting out war, western, and horror comics for decades. Both publishers have done romance specific series and specials. Nothing sticks. Everyone wants superheroes.

Actually what I liked about DC is that you had these non-capeshit books mixed in the same universe as the capes, so it made the world feel bigger and more dynamic. It's a shame they not only don't do it anymore but they also retooled those non-cape characters into capes.
