But God forbid you vote Republican or say the N word. Fake edge.

Voting republican is cringe but yes, people like this live their lives imagining they're still fighting against the boomers in the 90s who told them they couldn't swear, get tattoos or piercings, smoke weed, etc.
It's irrelevant whether those things are actually bad or not - these people rebel against an authority figure that straight up just does not exist anymore.

Got to love creators smelling their own cheese shit and convincing themselves that they are invincible.

To be fair, this is a legit defence. I'm not saying you have to make your own pile of poop to be able to call out the guy shitting on your plate, but in the gamedev community I would NEVER take shit from some nodev who doesn't even have a game, and the first thing some shittalker on /ic/ hears is "PYW" (post your work) because frick taking criticism from people who could literally never create what you're trying to do.

Not gonna read this whole thread but I know it's some feud with Digital Circus based on and I just wanna say that both Hazbin Hotel and Digital Circus are one in the same lowest-common-denominator shows that are manufactured to have the most ravenous and autistic fandoms ever. Just a group of shitty tumblr OCs with no rhyme or reason other than to be "the one you identify with and make fan art of". Both are just shows manufactured for mindless plot speculation and fan content and nothing else. Both are just made for autistic 15-23 year olds who have never spent as much as a minute away from the internet, and have unhealthy attachments to cartoon characters due to a lack of real-world interaction.

It's slightly less worse with Digital Circus because Gooseworx was just simply presented with an opportunity to pitch a show to a studio and she threw out a bunch of ideas with TADC being the one that stuck.
With Vivzie you can tell these shows are her autistic universes she had been thinking up since she was a teen. Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss are basically an extension of what she is, which is pretty sad because it just shows how vain and narcassistic of a person Vivziepop is down at her core while being shallow and full of nothing but terrible fricking ideas.
Digital Circus is derivative tumblr trite but Gooseworx whipped up that idea very quickly under the pressure of needing to come up with something to present. They've already proven that they can make good stuff under their own ideal circumstances where they're working alone.

The first fricking rule of writing literally anything is "know your audience."
Writing for yourself is one style of writing but is inherently self-indulgent and typically limits your work's success unless you get very lucky.

        >Writing for yourself is one style of writing but is inherently self-indulgent and typically limits your work's success unless you get very lucky.
She did. Vivzie got really lucky. She made characters and a concept that she was interested in and it resonated with A LOT of people. Her target audience is people like her, so she's writing stuff she likes because she knows it will resonate with that audience.

She got absurdly lucky (TWICE) but didn't recognize it and now her luck is running thin
You have to capitalize on what catches on.
What caught on with Hazbin was the aesthetic, which could have been spun into a profitable line of merch and maybe the occasional music video but people don't actually seem interested in the plot.
What caught on with Helluva was Loona and Millie+Moxxie, but in writing for herself she's completely focused on the gay owl nobody likes.

Her comedy style, like a lot of people that rely on shock, actually relies on novelty. Their shtick quickly runs dry. See: Roiland, Dane Cook

            Anonymous

Give credit where credit is due. One success could be attributed to dumb luck, but the fact that she was able to do it twice means she does have some skill.

It remains to be seen how people respond to Hazbin. It's entirely possible that, as you say, she's focused on the 'wrong' things and now the spindlehorse wave is over, but it's too early to say. I honestly don't watch either show since it's not really for me, but I find the absolute hatred that some people seem to have for her fascinating.

        Anonymous

Viz already does that. One of the main things that push Helluva Boss (and likely will push Hazbin along) is making fun of cringe 2012 Tumblr culture. Lots of swearing, eroticism to the point of it not making sense, etc. People feel nostalgic towards those times nowadays and will enjoy stuff referencing it or making fun of it.

      Anonymous

100% of the time, it's true, you should be making the content YOU want to see because it entertains you. Viv and many people are inspired and influenced by South Park. Viv's main issue isn't so much the content she makes, it's that she'll have to seek validation for her content ANY TIME someone questions why the series is popular at all.

Most people understand that Neil Breen will make Breen movies, and he'll never take feedback. That's to his benefit. His work can seem more true and endearing because of it. Much like with Steven Universe, Viv has made CHANGES to her series based on feedback from her die hard fans. So long as she's pleasing the 20 people who already kiss her ass, she has a hard time dealing with push back, and we end up with
      sperg outs" like this.

    why are zoomers so anti-sex

      Anonymous

None of them are having it compared to previous generations. Way more porn, and way more graphic porn at that, but less physical interaction. Feels like the average zoomer would be considered a shut-in nerd in my time.

      Anonymous

It's less anti-sex and more backlash against the oversaturation of it in internet culture. Sex is a punchline to people whose most naughty exposure to porn before dialup was finding their dad's Playboy, but to a lot of these zoomers, they've spent most of their lives exposed to that shit, so instead of being some alluring taboo it's just nauseating repetition. And a lot of the shit surrounding online sex culture is repulsive, but pushed forward by autistic deviants who want to cry persecution if called weird (think of how emboldened and obnoxious furries are, and apply that to almost every fetish with more than, like, twelve people making content for it), so eventually sentiment against the whole thing was going to bottle up. Finally, tack on the number of morons who make their fetishes a huge part of their online personality giving the impression that sex communities online are all populated by brainrot coomers just looking for stuff to jack off to, and it's just uncool.

Other shows and movies that try to be so over-the-top raunchy are just obnoxious because they do it as gross-out humor. Sex and swears make them uncomfortable, and they try to make the audience share in that discomfort.

Vivzie, on the other hand, is unapologetically sex-positive. All the characters are slender and sexy, and they never hold back because Vivzie doesn't think the audience needs to be spared. This full committal to the style of humor makes her shows genuine and funny.

There's a balance that needs to happen, right? Like, if you're a comedian and you get no laughs after a joke, obviously you workshop that joke. But you're still WORKSHOPPING it, not changing it completely for wide appeal. I think a big issue is that Vivienne probably doesn't do any table reads or internal screenings with her crew to see if jokes and story beats land. She probably does like, the bare minimum when it comes to an editor pass. I also don't believe she's worked on her own internal comedic timing enough where a lot of the jokes she wants to do are perfect the first time through. Like, someone like Louie CK when he was writing "Louie" could probably just nail a joke after the first or second take. He has the comedy chops to know how to structure the funniest sentence and perform it with the funniest cadence. But Vivienne? Eh. Not really.

      Anonymous

That’s the sad thing about everyone in the entertainment business today, they’re usually too stubborn to take any form of critique. Creators would rather ignore any non positive feedback even if their show’s popularity is clearly on the decline because of it, they’ll even go so far as to make fun of critics instead of acknowledging the problems with their writing.

        Anonymous

I think it's also a mixture of lack of vision. If Vivienne writes a joke and doesn't really know how she wants it to be performed, she might rely a little TOO MUCH on the voice actors to just give her magic. She might give very generic or vague instructions like, "And Blitz is really excited in this moment", but probably doesn't have an actual idea how she wants the scene to play out beat-for-beat in her head.

It's one of those things where if you don't KNOW color theory, you hire a color script artist in hopes he'll just do most of the work for you. You'll say, "This is sad scene, so blues would be good" and then you just trust the other guy to know what he's doing and deliver gold on your behalf.

        ?si=b5f1wR8oNDAdgjBw
In this, Jason Alexander is trying to teach Larry David how to act like George. George is based off of Larry David, he wrote for the character for a fricking decade. But he is still getting advice from someone else who KNOWS how to break shit down. And Jason Alexander knows the character so well because Larry David used to explain it to him during the making of Seinfeld.

You need that back-and-forth understanding and the ability to absorb while also teaching for good creative skills.

Sounds a lot like Genndy Tartakovsky

Gennedy has a vision, he just really sucks at endings. Endings are probably one of the harder things to do as a writer, but you'd think he would've nailed one in his 20+ year career.

I would say that a lot of people cannot take critique well nowadays. Of everyone I know, only my mother, one of my friends and my boss will take onboard any criticisms and adapt accordingly. Everyone else I know won’t even really make the effort and have at times sperged out. I think the entertainment industry is more prominent in this regard as everyone in it seem to be perpetual (wo)man-children who have never faced adversity in their lives before.

    >Do you have any idea what it's like?! Everywhere I go, "Hey Cartman, you must like Helluva Boss, right?" "Hey, your sense of humor reminds me of Helluva Boss, Cartman." I am NOTHING like Helluva Boss! When I make jokes, they are inherent to a story! Deep, situational and emotional jokes based on what is relevant and has a POINT! OP has a hate boner so basically anything that Vivzie says or does will become a reason to be outraged.

OP is probably also one of the dipshits involved in the argument and is trying to whip up support here so they don't have to feel so stupid.

This would have been fine if it weren't for the fact that this wasn't the sole time she said that over and over to keep her fanbase support against the haters instead of keeping composition like a grown adult and keeping her fanbase out of petty internet arguments but since most of her fanbase are teenagers and frustrated women in their 20/30s, they can always let it slide for her own sake. But considering how she herself having admitted to somehow "organically" talk like that also, I guess formality never existed for her.

Viv is more pissy and b***hy about the way people perceive her work than any other creator with a following that I've seen.
Who else with a decent following goes on rants every few months because someone suggested their humor is repetitive and stale, or their characters are over designed rainbow vomit?

not trying to white knight here because frankly I don't give a frick, but it's entirely possible that she gets a lot more shit than other creators. There have been dedicated Vivzie hate threads here for YEARS and it was especially bad when Spindlehorse was one of the only indie productions really making waves. People seemed almost offended that she was succeeding at making something like it was an unpleasant reminder of their own failure.

I'm with you that her responses are juvenile and it would often be best to stay quiet, but I also know how relentless and awful some schizos are and can understand why it might push someone to finally clap back.

            >I always get the impression people hated her because she was a woman
There are a lot of female animators I adore. Lynne Naylor, Tracy Butler, Sally Cruikshank, Lauren Faust and so on. Being a woman doesn’t have anything to do with it. Vivzie is just a massive c**t who can’t take criticism. There’s a reason it took years for her to finally get a show to enter mainstream animation. While she has a good art direction, she’s a horrible person to work with. If Hazbin fails or doesn’t become popular as expected. I Imagine Amazon won’t be calling her back to make more shows.

Going back to Lauren Faust, she’s a female animator yet MLP exploded in popularity in the 2010s. While there may have been anti-bronies who talked shit about her to get a reaction. She was widely praised for the most part. I’m not even a ponygay myself but I can’t deny there was good writing and characters that made the show appealing to many regardless of gender. Helluva Boss has none of that. It’s target audience are 30 year old women who never matured past high school, much like Viv herself. It’s a reflection of character.

            [...]

              noun
              1. A supporter of policies that are socially progressive and promote social welfare.

      >It is FASCINATING how nobody complains this way about the dialog in like, South Park
The difference is the swearing has a purpose in South Park. A good example would be the movie in how the moms wanted to ban Terrance and Philip because it was teaching the kids to swear like sailors. Helluva Boss on the other hand tries to dress up the constant swearing as a form of intimidation but instead makes the cast look moronic by having them talk like that. It’s inline with a 13 year old COD player spewing death threats.

It’s an issue of quantity over quality, If Viv was actually a good writer she’d have the characters swear but only when they are either in destress or there’s a punchline involved, even shows like Family Guy understand that. Lots of people think swearing automatically makes something adult, but when you are over-reliant on making the characters say “shit” and “frick” it makes them sound more child-like if anything. Viv isn’t a good writer, neither are Brandon or Adam Neylan. The show would be better off if it had a writing team consisting of cartoonists who understand what makes other shows appealing.

Do you think something like Twin Peaks became popular because it had a scary midget and weirdly designed rooms? No, it’s because the characters were likable and interesting. I mean yeah Helluva Boss is popular now, but what about in the future? People are going to re-watch the episodes 10 years from now and cringe.

        Anonymous

Also another thing is that South Park creators Matt and Trey were capable of making their humor BETTER. They fricking parody the overuse of swears in "It hit the fan" episode. They were able to recognize their own shortcomings, their own cringe from very early on and work through it. Evolve what they had into something better. Raise the bar for themselves. And Viv seems unwilling to change and deluded into thinking that she doesn't need to change and is already perfect. She has WAY too big of an ego. And I think I finally see what irks me so much about her. It's this unwillingness to change and lack of admission of her own shortcomings and instead deflecting everything and making her fanbase an echo chamber where everyone who doesn't agree with her decision even slightly is worthy of being excommunicated and harassed which she seems to encourage.

Absolutely no fricking shot somebody is unironically arguing that fricking South Park is a better show than Helluva Boss

HB's pilot was a REALLY good pilot episode. At no point did it suggest that it was going to turn into a musical drama about forbidden gay romance, so she's fortunate that Disney didn't produce this.

      >It is FASCINATING how nobody complains this way about the dialog in like, South Park

No one in South Park talks like this. I can tell you've never watched South Park. There are a FEW instances in the early seasons, but that was really Matt and Trey getting some goofy shit out of their systems and pushing what they could do on TV. (Vivzie can do whatever she wants so there's no edginess to it.)

They even lampooned it in the recent multiverse special with a lot of the "diverse" characters being basically stereotypical versions of themselves you'd expect to see from a stunning and brave Gen Z writer who wants to capture South Park for a new audience but has only read Wikipedia summaries.

Hence that special is full of random 'frick's, including diverse Cartman calling Kyle a 'fricking butt-fricker', but there's a larger point to it.

There's also a lot of South Park episodes rated TV-14 now, something Vivzie literally couldn't manage to even accidentally do, let alone if you had a gun to her temple if she wrote the word 'frick' again.

It is true that the show got made because millions of people wanted more after the pilot. But two big reasons why Vivzie was able to make those pilots in the first place was because she was already a known creator AND her grandparents are wealthy landlords. We are living in the age of "We can therefore we should" in media. Based around low effort shock that's already getting stale, instead of telling a compelling story.
I get with less restrictions these days people are motivated to swing for the fences with this attitude (eg: Euphoria's unnecessary parade of penises, The Boys saying "frick" 474 times in Season 3 for no reason) but if the majority of what's coming out is just shallow crap, then maybe, just maybe, those restrictions of the past were a blessing in disguise.
If you want to tell a good story with that content then do it, but the majority of it is just edgy cynical juvenile garbage. Sure it's popular now, but the novelty's gonna wear off and they'll have to actually learn how to tell a decent story.

Because middle school girls into girl oriented edgy stuff like Jack skellington, mostly talk like the characters in HB. They make the same kinds of jokes too. Her natural state is to sperg out, as is with all people who are stunted. If you watch HB or whatever, you are watching a show made for teenage girls, no matter how many "adult" themes it has. I'm not sure that's what anon was getting at. I think the argument being made was essentially the same as asking "why are you a coprophage if you hate the taste of shit?"
If you don't like the media and you still consume it, you're giving the creators reason to make more of the same. Stop watching. It's like watching a John Waters movie and complaining about drag queens all up in your shit (and literally eating shit, for that matter).

      Anonymous

some people don't exactly have a problem with that, in a setting that is apparent to be basically based on Hell, some swearing is at least expected, but from how I could interpret it in during the series, the swears isn't much organic, but rather more in excess than it should have and more close to teens swearing or grown adults acting like children.

There's definitely different layers of how one could swear, the one who gets adjusted/adapted just like how presumably Vivzie did (and if so, jesus fricking christ, I do not wish that even upon my worst enemy because she makes it sound like how she learned it is how she interprets it to be like hell), which broadens from young kids learning to cuss, to teenagers throwing slurs left and right (depending on how lucky one is, you end up surrounded by teenagers with a toilet for a mouth or you don't, but they still mightbe able to contain it), to the adults that only mildly curse but don't make it a daily habit, to the adults that curse to high heaven because they are in a constant level of stress/really fricking awful environment which might lead to an infinite cycle of adaptive slurring to those around them.

It's even closing in on "Addict", her highest viewed video. Her defensive response is part her feeling hurt that her delinquent writing is being called out in the form of a joke and part her finally realizing that she is not an exception to the rules of relevancy in modern media.

    >As a writer you write for yourself and what you love
The latter I can somewhat agree, but sometimes you are stuck on a shitty project and need the money.
The former is bullshit. You write for an audience, for the potential people who will read your book or comic, or watch your movie or show. And even then, writers with enough awareness know not everyone will like their stuff, and not just cop out with "art is subjective".

the frick is there to be vulnerable about? The horny cartoon should follow-through on its constant horniness instead of just endless blueballing. A serialized cartoon with somewhat high production value (compared to the constant beanmouth and tween shit that's being made) that actually had sex in it would be cutting edge, most I've seen is the paper south park cutouts being dragged back and forth to hump each other. As is it's too safe and is getting stale.

you guys do realize Gooseworks (AKA creator of TADC) is a friend's of Vivzie and has even helped in doing designs previously for her works, right? (to name a few, the old geezer and these other two characters from that exact same episode). iirc Goose was also upset (I think) over their work being used to do that jab (which was pretty half-assedly thought out and still somehow right in the mark) and had it not gotten more attention from those who constantly treat the series as sex jokes/cusses, this whole situation would ever have happened

nevertheless, what Vivzie did was still overly sensitive and still trying to act as a holier-than-thou creator by trying to feign how sad one would be over not being able to enjoy a sense of humor such as hers. Someone like Gooseworx would mostly likely let things slide and Goose has pretty much even threatened turn the series into a shitpost or whatever if their fanbase didn't behave (which imho would honestly be pretty great to witness just to see how chaotic it would get but understand their perspective of just how wild some fanbases can turn into, already knowing what popularity would turn the series into

when did this happen? Was not exactly aware of it.

          TL;DR

Vivzie tried to give LackaDaisy a 5,000 donation under Spindelhorse's name during their Kickstarter. Tracey and her crew asked her not to do this, but she did it anyway. Failed to link the Kickstarter because Vivzie was virtue signaling about helping other indie creators.

An animator from Lackadaisy came out of the woodwork to criticize Vivzie, creating a huge drama storm on twitter between Lackadaisy vs Helluva Boss fans. Tracey rejected the donation (taking away the Producer Tier Vivzie would've had for that level)
Basically, Vivzie used to be friends with Fable - the lead person behind the Lackadaisy series but had a serious falling out with Vivzie shit-talking them on discord amongst *other* things.

It's implied there is serious drama behind the scenes but it's mostly being held back because people want to appear professional.

              Yes and No.

I think it's an open secret that Vivzie is a very unpleasant, petty, dramatic person to be around. She comes off as the type who is woefully emotionally and mentally stunted - almost definitely mentally ill.

If I had to guess, Fable would've been working on Spindlehorse with Vivzie, but got rejected due to some disagreement about morality, politics or some mixture of that. Vivzie tried to blacklist Fable from other people until Fable met Tracey and offered to bring up Lackadaisy into the indie animation scene.

Even a popular animator that WAS on good terms with Vivzie, Ashley Nichols recently has sided with Fable and the Lackadaisy crew - having nothing to do with anything in regards to Vivz anymore. She was the one who did HuniCast with the other VAs and bolstered the popularity for Hazbin in the early days of the fandom. She is also dating Angel's original VA Michael Kovach.
Vivzie seemed to get bitter after Ashley tried making her own pilot, Farfetched.

The fact Vivzie holds so much power and regard in the indie-industry makes her shitty childish behavior even more potent.
It seems Vivzie just hates competition - but is really trying to hide it.

Not that I agree with her, but being the best indie animation is a huge selling point. Nobody wants to be second best or third best. So, Vivziepop starts petty squabbles and drama with her competition, so she can remain on top, with her monopoly of indie animation in her grasp.

Every last one of them would turn on someone they know over petty shit and I watched them do it (from the sidelines) repeatedly. I do not recommend getting involved with them. Girls who draw anime style or realism are unironically more dependable and calm. I mean they're still women, they act different from men. But I haven't seen the same level of problems among their style groups as I have with the kind who draw like HH/HB/FarFetched

I'm not sure about the former, but the latter is strangely true. Have a couple friends who are like that that are unironically the best and extremely chill. I'd argue that gals that draw flat (little to no shading) and without the Disney-esque expressions (the anime part can sorta fit into that I guess) are also cool.

It's their tastes demonstrating their personalities really. Art style can tell you a lot about a person. And these modern indie cartoon type styles especially with women are a red flag to me. Dramatic and often insecure.

Tell us some of the stories.

I recently (like a month ago) watched one friend group of girls eat each other alive and have a block fest and discord implosion because one of them used AI for their background in a funny drawing that they didn't even post to social media. Honestly the kind of "FRICK YOU THE MAN": signaling is kind of weird considering how insanely privileged Vivzie's upbringing is.

She's never really suffered or been told no, but she really *really* wants to write these underdog characters who have been kicked around. She doesn't really know that perspective so it comes off as very hollow and performative.A rebel without a cause kind of vibe that just feels very weak.

I think also just that really childish sense of humor and her viciously defending it was pretty weird. I also got the sense that she has to have the spotlight at all times in regard to her projects.

As seen by how she gets so up in arms and feels personally attacked about any mild critique of her show. She's absolutely obsessed with how she appears to the public.

            >It's implied there is serious drama behind the scenes but it's mostly being held back because people want to appear professional

by the number of things I've already heard circling around Vivzie, most of the drama seems to come from how Vivzie behaves. Which I guess correlates with the fact how she pretty much admitted to speak as similarly as the cast in HB in concerns of swearing and if so, then yeah, I would also be pretty tired if I worked under the management of someone like that considering I do curse, but nowhere near the level Vivzie likes to take it in the show itself.

I mean thats just a proper adult. Only teens curse at every opportunity. I remember being in high school and just saying frick out loud for a laugh, so I can imagine being 30+ and hearing your dipshit boss curse and slip in gay shit with every sentence has to be grating, especially so since Vizie isn't even in her 30's yet and probably comes off like some art hoe know it all. Plus all the big time VA's probably just collect a check so all that's left is her behind the scenes staff to expose her bullshit.

The funny thing is that twitter will still label any criticism Vivzie gets simply because “she’s a woman” even though Helluva Boss stans attacked an entire animation company that was also entirely woman led (Iron Circus Animation)

Almost as if they pull the gender card as much as a brown person who’s in the wrong plays the minority card.

There are actually some pretty funny parallels between Vizie and Zoe Quinn, like the fact that they have restraining orders in each other because having both in the same city would actually cause it to sink into the Earth from their combined weight.
