I don't read comics but afaik clark isn't some bumbling idiot, ignorant to the world around him. maybe modern writers couldn't properly plan a story where superman gets involved in some political conflict without removing all of the nuance that should come with it but i don't think it's necessarily a bad idea

I think there's plenty of reason why he would want to be involved in some manner if he thinks it would help everyone. superman getting involved doesn't necessarily mean he should just impose his authority onto others either (though that's certainly how his government would want him to be involved).
What really should have happened is the producers shouldn't try to make a movie without a script and definitely shouldn't agree on adding political statements by their lead to their up-coming picture as part of the deal to even get said lead to play in it
