>literally a war hero
I know he fought in WWI and a lot of his friends died, but did he actually do anything distinguishable during the war?
I'm not dismissing him, I'm just curious if he did anything during the war that not every soldier did.

He candidly admits he spent the war trying to feign sickness.
i mean whats stopping you? plenty of books to be read, plenty of wars going on right now you can fight in and plenty of your stories waiting to be written
It is absolutely relevant. OP image is a lie meant to give false hope that you are gonna somehow make something of your life after being an underachieving loser for most of it. It's pretending as if Tolkien suddenly came out of the woodwork at 45 with his masterpiece after a life of doing nothing, which simply is not true. He was a professor and a war hero, and both of those things contributed to his writing anyway.
You are not going to get to 45 after a life of doing nothing but shitposting on Cinemaphile and somehow pull a masterpiece from your ass.
This. It's one thing to not produce your opus until later in life, but no one wastes away as a pathetic loser for 30+ years and then all of a sudden does something great.
>I'm afraid to release the full thing
Anon...have you SEEN the shit people write on the internet with absolutely no shame? You put so much work into an innocuous work like that, just post the damn thing.
Phew! Still time to shit out some generic fantasy guff and make some cold hard cash before I cark it.
I'm gonna have a golden coffin and some top heavy tarts in silver micro bikinis as pallbearers.
This legitimately picked me up. I've had to put all of my creative endeavors on hold because of work and family and have been feeling depressed about it.
Most people lose their drive and ambition over time, so you probably won't accomplish jack shit later in life. But if you have a good attitude and work hard into your 70s that's 50 years of opportunities to succeed, vs only 10 if you give up on your dreams after 30 like most people.
Tolkien before 40 had: >convinced Edith to marry him despite being unemployed and broke >graduated with first class honors at Oxford >fought in the war as a Lieutenant >4 children >translated medieval romance and Anglo-Saxon literature, notably Beowulf, his work always published and acclaimed >taught as the Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford >become profoundly based
No one cares about tolkien apart from old fat nerds
Daily reminder you missed out on teen love
You missed out on a youth of fun and conquest
You are old and missed the boat on literally everything
Enjoy chads sloppy old 40 year old single mothers (no sex just providing)
No one knows what Tolkien looked like and he got zero pussy
Ridley Scott didn't direct his first feature film until he was 40... but he graduated from the Royal College of Arts, got his start in television as a production designer in his 20s, and spent a decade directing commercials. It's already too late for you.
I forgot the guy's name, but one of the better living lawyers worldwide right now went to law school at like 50. Just take action and say yes to anything. Idea? Frickin' do it, or write it down and implement it at a proper time. A lot of the reason people are down on themselves is due to inaction. I can't remember where I heard it from, maybe TV? But I once heard that if you have the confidence to hit on 100 women irl and strike out but keep going for it, you can conquer the world. Just, y'know, do. Go do it, whatever it is. Yes Man isn't just a mid movie, it's an honestly freeing lifestyle.
This isn't about age. If you "want to be a writer", why are you not writing?
>"People desire the fame of being an artist without putting in the work"
This viewpoint is dumb. Humans are complicated, we have conflicting feelings. A lot of potential artists have 1-2 big issues that prevent them from making stuff. But these aren't minor issues, they're often innate to your personality, and you may have to rewrite your whole lifestyle to fix this. Engineering your lifestyle to promote a specific goal is really fricking hard, and by age 30 our external life is rather fixed which makes it all the more difficult.
Can it be done? Yeah. Are you smart enough to figure out what's been holding you back these 10-20+ years and solve it? Statistically, no. But it can be done.
tolkien was an oxford professor and linguist before he started writing books for children
this. who are you kidding op, giving hope to those who are already further. frick off.
He was also literally a war hero

more like a snore zero
Jesus... can I have his life?
i mean whats stopping you? plenty of books to be read, plenty of wars going on right now you can fight in and plenty of your stories waiting to be written
that's irrelevant

Why are people here expecting to do something great? I'd assume people here are just trying to survive
I never got to serve in the trenches.
You can go do it now
Rohmer made his breakout film at 49.
I'm 34 and still a virgin
so was tolkien
Literally me
Isaac newton died a virgin
Yeah so he was objectively a loser.
He hated women although that may be a chicken/egg situation
Sounds like he was closeted. Just found out he lived to be eighty fricking four.
Why haven’t you killed your self?
every just needs to chill out, myself include. it's hard not to get worked up over the littlest things.
Thanks, I'll try not to dwell on suicide.
I’m 46.
I'm 46
have you started anything
It's over
I would date a 45 year old woman
you don't need to date her if you already know she's 45
van gogh only painted for about ten years before he died.
we're all gonna make it bros
van gogh is the definition of never making it
he made it, just post mortem
He was also a successful serial killer before death and recognition for his art
I have wasted my life
I finished my first novel this year. The only person to read it is my grandmother. I almost gave up on writing but I wanted to finish it for her.
That's really nice. I'm sure she enjoyed your homoerotic fanfic
Post it and I'll at least read the first page.
I'm afraid to release the full thing
My grandmother thinks everything I write is solid gold
It's a ya romantasy. I'm obviously not an amazing writer but I'm glad I did it
Might as well edit and publish it under a penname and keep practicing now that it's finished.
>I'm afraid to release the full thing

Wouldn't it be funny if your grandmother was reading it and just hated it
post a part of it, bruh
He started making the mythos and languages of LOTR when he was in his 20s
Right...
because Tolkien was a neet loser until 45 then decided to do something
Phew! Still time to shit out some generic fantasy guff and make some cold hard cash before I cark it.

getting old feels bad
Okay, but Tolkien had published several books and poetry collextions before he even began plotting out LoTR...

she should try to date an accomplished man instead of fricking everything up herself. women are rarely great at anything.
