i don't understand the obsession that fans had with goku. he's essentially an aloof superman. no situation he ever enters has any weight or drama to it, he's just so fricking boring.
The anime made Gohan look better than the manga. His fight his longer and he does alright against Buutenks despite losing. Toriyama off screened his battle with Buutenks which is humiliating. His moment against Super Buu only lasts a few panels as well. You can tell he checked out
unfortunately dragonball from that time is wildly inconsistant. maybe a handfull of episodes have movie quality animation, but it's a crap shoot which ones got it as they were outsourcing it to every studio available
The DBZ anime is massively inconsistent.
Toei heavily subcontracted out animation so you'd get episodes that are almost OVA tier, and others that are almost unwatchable.
The above is from somewhere between 1994-1995. Which is just about reaching the Golden Age of Japanese animation. Its about on par with a lot of what Sunrise/Madhouse/Gainax were making/about to make.

Gohan really has to be the worst character in Dragon Ball.
