The way the show is written, you could drop a fart in literally any scene and it would break the spell. Way too much lofty dialogue about big space and time bullshit. If Rust just belched in this guys face it would be the equivalent of cheating.

The point was showing Rust was stepping in the deep end. It wasn't like Tuttle, where the evil recognized him and he recognized the evil, but they both still had to put on a front. Here, the evil recognized him for what he was, told him so, and made no attempt to conceal its own nature. The investigation was over, no more mind games or snooping, either Rust stepped into the monster's lair or he didn't.
This is the moment in the show that I knew they were going to delve into Lovecraftian horror, and the final twist would be about discovering something darker on The Other Side. And then we got the ending we got with stars twinkling and good vs evil (metaphor, not literal), and it was all fricking shit.
