Zack Snyder ruined the DC branding

This movie has everything. It has color, it has jokes, it has post-credits, and it is a part of James Gunn's DCU. What's happening?

Genera audiences don’t trust DC anymore. DC is now considered a toxic brand to people.

I wouldn't call it toxic, but yeah, they lost the audience by making nothing but lame shit. for several years.

Their cartoons and animated movies still have an audience. The people in charge of their dumbass live action productions are responsible, there can be no true brand damage to something like DC because it’s got so many continuities and reboots they can just freely pretend X or Y or Z didn’t happen.

        >Their cartoons and animated movies still have an audience
Because only the nerds and kids who don't know any better watch the cartoons and animated movies. They'll watch anything.
        >there can be no true brand damage to something like DC because it’s got so many continuities and reboots they can just freely pretend X or Y or Z didn’t happen.
That doesn't matter to most people. Even if after TLJ everything was rebooted and the Luke-Han-Leia movie that everyone wanted came out, the damage would still be done to the brand.

They're rushing a Infinite Crisis movie because nobody gives a shit about their animated movies anymore

No, it's because they are killing the new verse since every new single cartoon and movie will be set in the James Gunn verse

Might have something to do with the fact that nobody cares about Blue Beetle and instead of casting a popular (like Chris Pratt) or talented (like RDJ) actor to headline it they cast a literal who.

      >Zack Snyder ruined the DC branding
why scapegoat zack for bait? anyone who's anyone knows WB did this to themselves.

Zack Snyder would have saved DC if they just let him continue and finish his original plan for the universe.
Movies don't even have to be good, but generally people grow to like and respect passionate people putting out and finishing their vision.
Look at fast and the furious. Did anyone outside of a sub subculture of gearhead morons give a shit about them at first? No, but after 4 or 5 movies it became pretty damn charming and endearing, and then we all grieved the ironic death of one of it's stars, and now it continued on to be a pretty fricking major action franchise. It's wacky, its mostly shitty, but it's still beloved enough.
Same thing with all of the terrible Paul WS Anderson Resident Evil movies. They rape the games, but they have a bumshit crazy aspect to them and it's kind of nice seeing a guy give his wife an entire career with like 8 movies of fighting mutant zombies in matrix slow motion.
If they had just let Zack Snyder make 4 or 6 or whatever fricking movies he wanted they'd be more or less cohesive and people would eventually watch them and respect that they put out a full story. Being a bunch of fricking pussies and trying to change things after every film due to what critics and homosexuals on twitter are saying is fricking moronic. And now this is the result.

        Anonymous

No he wouldn't have. Snyder needs people to tell him no on his more moronic ideas (making BvS a retelling of Arthurian legend, for instance) and like making movies that are three plus hours long. Movies that long just don't do well unless there's an Endgame or Avatar-tier spectacle attached. It can be the best movie of all time, but if it's three hours long and has a plot so complex it'd make a bureaucrat blush, people won't see it, and it'll flop, even if it's a classic in 20 years.
Granted, WB ended up pumping out DC films that both flopped AND won't be classics ever, but still, I don't think they're any worse financially than 6 Snyder movies would've put them. And I'm excited for Rebel Moon, but that's just the truth.

My go-to for this is the star wars prequels. They're for the most part the creative vision of a very small team and it shows. By contrast I was going to ask you to imagine what they would have turned out like if there was a bunch of israelites at some studio constantly meddling and changing things between releases but as of 2015 that's not a hypothetical

This. Creativity can only come from a single person, or at the very least, a close knit writing duo (so close they're literally siblings, for instance). You can't make a good creative product by committee, which is what WB tried to do.

Zack had vision & a concise direction of where he wanted the movies to go. I don’t agree with every decision he made but he is infinitely better than whatever the frick WB is doing now, including hiring Gunn who seemingly doesn’t know if his universe is a full reboot or not. Likely because WB themselves can’t decide what they want to do now

    1. The economy fricking stinks no matter what lies they say so people are only going to spend money when they REALLY want to see something.
    2. No one wants to go ape it up with the chimps that go to theaters now. Why would I want to sit in a stinky zoo with hooting howler monkeys to watch a movie when I can just watch it at home in comfort.
    3. WB executives poisoned DC as a brand by trying to make it Marvel 2: Quipfest Reborn. You know what DC movie was actually good? Joker. Why? Because it was something relatively fresh (and that's saying something).

        >should have another character not originally from the comicbooks
FUN FACT: Jimmy Olsen was a character created for the 1950s George Reeve's Superman TV snow -- because in the 1950s a woman cannot a smart and aggresive newspaper reporter that goes around with Clark Kent ... she should only be a femme fatale that needs saving by the male protagonist. Thus, a male cohort needs to be with Clark Kent not a lady reporter ... and TV show created Jimmy Olsen.

Jimmy Olsen was added to the comicbooks because of the popularity of the show.

FUN FACT #2: In the Lois and Clark Tv show in the 90s, they made fun of this by having the men (Clark, Perry, and Jimmy) ordered Lois to get them coffee.

FUN FACT #3: In the 1960s Batman TV show, the showrunners did not want to use Batwoman (Kathy Kane). They wanted somebody unrelated to Bruce Wayne and about the same age as Robin. The TV show created Barbara Gordon (Batgirl).

AND because of the popularity of the TV show, Barbara Gordon/Batgirl was added to the comicbooks.

"Why kill Jimmy Olsen?" Was a youtube review from BvS a long time ago ... which mentikned a comic character was killed; why not create another one for the movie.

Same posts were in Cinemaphile. And they were corrected by Cinemaphile which said that Jimmy was an original Cinemaphile not Cinemaphile so, if a show changes the character or even kills him, he's a Cinemaphile character.

A similar complaint about Jimmy Olsen being black in the Supergirl show.

We can already tell by the trailers that Blue Beetle is going to be the most generic cape film since Black Adam. Especially with the movie trying hard to be an MCU film (again).

Yet these extemely highly paid executives, who have zero creative OR business sense...just keep getting paid. The first two here are big for me. I make six figures and I still have to be way more frugal than just like a year ago. Also, any of the theaters in my city that priced out degenerates or were in areas without a lot of low-class foot traffic shut down during the lockdown. I would absolutely go see this as a curiosity, but between both of those factors there's no way I'm going to rush to the theater to see any movie unless I really care about spoilers, which at this point would just be any Star Wars movie because I'm starcucked and all those movies even have anymore are epic twists.

Because the length of time to develop a film means they're like half a decade out of step with whatever Marvel's doing, hence why they tried to retroactively turn Man of Steel into a "universe" in the first place.

DC's problem is that they don't know what they want so they just look at Marvel and conclude that the moronic parts are what made it print money so let's do the same thing. They need their own identity, they're not Marvel and never will be and trying to make it work will just result in the shitfest you're witnessing in real time.

DC never had a good track record building their superhero franchise. It's always them trying to catch up to the MCU, doing quick Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman films, then quickly jumping to Justice League. The brilliance of the early MCU is that it grew together organically. The DCU has always been chasing.

Even Gunn's roadmap seems troubling. Why the frick is introducing The Authority right out of the gate? Stick to the A-listers, because DC's bench is not that deep.

      >Why the frick is introducing The Authority right out of the gate?
iirc to adapt "Whatever Happened to Truth, Justice & the American Way?" and re-establish Superman's tone, because they can't have the Batman/Superman duality that's traditionally core to DC as a brand when Superman is also gritty and brooding.

Movie doesn’t look terrible, cgi seems fine, cool character seemingly adapted correctly from page to film, and the main actor was likeable enough in cobra Kai. I won’t watch 1) because aside from Joker, man of steel onwards has made DC look like complete garbage (80% Snyder’s fault, or whoever forced him to completely miscast every Justice League member outside of Superman), 2) I no longer see any movies in theaters because Hollywood is full of homosexual liberal hypocrites who don’t deserve a cent from me, and 3) that stupid Batman is a fascist joke in the trailer which relates very much to number 2 above. Frick off. BvS what a joke. The title alone is gimmicky as frick. Then they’ve cram in the JL intros along with Death of Superman into one bloated mess of a movie. All so stream-roll a JL movie. Guarantee you, MOS2, solo Batman and we already know solo WW would’ve all done well.

            Anonymous

I like the movie, but the title IS gimmicky and forced by WB excecs. The movie was never meant to be a VS movie where you go and see who wins, it was a movie about the characters and they just happened to have a conflict and fight near the end. It's not something like Freddy VS Jason, but people thought it was and left disappointed.

              Anonymous

And it was not Snyder’s idea. He was planning MOS2 and the WB demanded a new Batman be in it and thus Batman vs Superman. Mind you, Nolan’s extremely popular Dark Knight series ended a year before MOS came out. And WB wanted a new Batman! Marvel is not even stupid enough to replace Iron Man that fast

BvS is peak capekino. Integrating Batman into the story through the black zero event from Man of Steel was a great idea. We didn't need another solo Batman movie so soon after the Nolan trilogy and WW came out before JL so the trinity was already established.
The real problem was fans expecting a MCU style cinematic universe when that was never Snyder's intention. WB should've sold it as a contained Justice League saga that had a beginning middle and end. The Snyder cut was proof that if they just stuck to their guns and trusted the plan then things would've worked out much better for them and they would've been ready to do a full reboot by now without a divided fanbase.

                >This isn't the first time the studio has tried to bring the two biggest names in DC Comics together. After the embarrassing "Batman & Robin" in 1997, several reboots of the Caped Crusader were proposed, including "Batman vs. Superman." Director Wolfgang Petersen ("Air Force One") was attached to a script by "Seven" screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker that would have pitted the two against each other, but that project was eventually scrapped for Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins."

As you can see, Batman vs Superman was not Snyder’s idea but WB going back years. WB demanded this because MOS didn’t make Dark Knight money. Batman Begins didn’t make Dark Knight or MOS money. Yet WB didn’t demand Nolan put Superman in the sequel

Here's Chris Terio, the screen writer of BvS, complaining about WB execs saddling him and Snyder with the Batman versus Superman script.

                >The studio seemed to take this position after BvS that my writing was too dark and that this was their problem. But what they didn’t mention was that, for example, in the draft of the Batman/Superman script that W.B. had developed—[which was] the draft I was handed when I joined the project—Batman was not only branding criminals with a bat brand, he also ended the movie by branding Lex Luthor.
                >That ending was a point over which I explicitly went to the mat with the studio again and again. I argued that Batman cannot end the movie continuing this behavior, which amounted to torture, because then the movie was endorsing what he did.
                >I’m the one who had been saying that we can’t make a joke out of Superman raining hell upon Black African Muslim characters in the desert, as Lois promises that Superman is not going to go easy on them because they punched her. But somehow I’m the person with the dark sensibility? I wanted to say, “I’ve been saving you from yourselves! I’ve been working with the director to bring a voice of conscience and sanity to the almost perversely dark film you’ve been developing for years, but I’m the problem here?”
                >I removed the punch [of Lois], for one thing. Just think about the optics of that.

That article came out right after MoS released and I'm pretty sure by that point the Batman v Superman idea was already on the table considering they announced it at comic con a month later. So I never really bought this narrative that Snyder was forced into putting Batman in the movie. In every interview he gave around BvS time he made it sound like Batman naturally came into the conversation when they were figuring out what to do for the sequel but who knows I suppose he could've been covering for the studio. Regardless, while I would've loved a stand alone Superman trilogy from Snyder/Cavill, that clearly wasn't what the public was looking for at the time and I think the approach they took could've worked if WB didn't get cold feet.

WB had unrealistic expectations of MOS and considered it a failure and why demanded Batman be in next one. It’s pretty obvious.

Yeah I don't doubt it tbh but again I don't even think it was the wrong move considering all anyone was asking about in the lead up to Man of Steel was 'when is Justice League coming'? I don’t think anyone was asking for JL movie outside WB. We hadn’t even gotten a solo Wonder Woman movie on big screen yet or The Flash which had been in production hell forever. Nobody wanted another Batman literally a year after Nolan’s Dark Knight series ended.

Nah if you go back and watch some of the press interviews from MoS, Snyder was being badgered with questions about Justice League and even the small Batman tease in MoS had people talking about an eventual JL movie.

Yeah that's why I said it wouldn't have made sense to do another solo Batman movie so soon but including him in a team up 4 years after his last on screen appearance was the right call I think.

The reason why Christopher Nolan stopped working as a producer following Man of Steel was because WB execs kept bothering with the idea of including a post-credits scene in MoS where Christian Bale shows up receiving a black case filled with kryptonite from Lex Luthor.

                >As revealed in a profile of the Interstellar director from The Guardian, Nolan — who acted as executive producer for the 2013 Zack Snyder movie, as well as working on its story — made the decision not to follow Marvel’s lead when the studio floated the idea. According to the newspaper, he responded, “A real movie wouldn’t do that.”
                >Ultimately, Nolan’s The Dark Knight films remained siloed off.
                >“I don’t blame him. I like that his thing doesn’t get muddied by these other touches,” said Snyder.

Real Hispanics don't want to be reminded of what they are seen as by racist israelites or what they could've been if they never got by working hard for their family. They want to see a MOVIE. A spectacle featuring a normal nuclear family living in a decent house and living a stable, established American life that gets disrupted by the main plot but is still core to the characters a la Spy Kids or Fast&Furious. moron execs can't get that through their heads.

If WB hadn’t interfere I doubt we’d gotten Batman. Nolan was the producer of MOS and MOS very much offshoot of Nolan’s Dari Knight Series with Zimmer coming along doing the score. We would’ve gotten MOS2, Flash years earlier, Wonder Woman and Aquaman movie and the possible JL movie

Superman Legacy is unironically my most awaited movie, so I can NOT watch it, NOT pay for it and have fun at its expense in the internet. It will give me more entertainment than actually enjoying the movie. Id wish I could freeze myself until 2025 so I can see that shit failing, the media blaming zack snyder, trying to make up some records (the best tuesday box office after an eclipse in Thailand), everyone seething and then WB firing Gunn just to hire another MCU quipster reject like Waititty.

They are not DC fans, they are literal Synder bots. Imagine trying to gaslight everyone Nolan's Batman did more damage to Batman than Snyder's Supes and Batman to DC? These people are lunatics.

I'm a big Batman fan and while I like the movies, Nolan's aren't a great representation of Batman. He's barely a detective and spends 2 movies trying to quit being Batman to be with Rachel. He never had the intensity of Batman so something was always missing.

No one is falling for this shit, these last lame duck DC whatever films mean nothing with the hard reboot coming, and also Blue Beetle is obscure as frick and the trailer looks like an average CW DC episode.

The problem is that these lame duck films have damaged the brand so much that I'm not sure there's going to be much of an audience interested in the reboot by the time Legacy comes out. Not to mention Gunn keeps fricking lying about what is and isn't DCU to try to sell these shit films which is going to end up biting him in the ass because now people are going to associate this trash with his reboot. Can't wait to watch that homosexual crash and burn out of Hollywood.

Studio decided to listen to a bunch of morbidly obese fanboys and Twitter trannies instead of trusting the rising track record for Snyderverse. They also pushed too much for JL when they should have actually waited for the 2020s. It is not surprising the actual movie was a hit when it was released properly in 2021
