I never saw Monty Python stuff as terribly leftist. They were all well off middle class kids who went to prestigious universities and were completely institutional. Their comedy really only pushed the buttons of the stodgiest old fuddy duddies. John Cleese in particular was always the way he is now.
Further I think the issue with their reputation is more derived from their American fanbase, which they've never seemed completely comfortable with (outside of the money it generated.)
