I thought only mestizos used limewire, chads used kazaa. I only ever downloaded songs, then one of my friends showed me how to torrent in 2004 and I never looked back. Back in those days you didn’t even need a vpn and I never remember getting any dmca violations.

We also used to use daemon tools to make isos of the games we had bought and shared them with each other

      real chads used them all.
      bearshare, kazaa, limewire, morpheus, etc.
at some point, they all got used.

you could absolutely find full films, long porno, all kinds of big files... but only so many people had a connection fast enough to make that a sub-10h job (if it's a quality version)

so fast majority of 56/k days people were just downloading tracks/short clips...

but there was a short period of time when cable and people were still using LW

cable speeds could get pretty mean. was a game-changer

personally i downloaded all of Wolf's Rain on IRC... didn't even love it or anything...

I remember getting internet faster than 56k for the first time. It was 1999 or 2000 and we got DSL which was 768k, it felt extremely fast and it probably was relative to the time. A couple of years later I remember upgrading to 1.5 mbps

        Anonymous

The 1.5 mbps connection was broadband, DSL couldn’t go faster than 768k

we were one of the first to get DSL and broadband.
my mother worked for Hewlett Packard and my dad for Sun Microsystems, so we got good shit.
I used to sell/give pirated games/movies at school and my dad showed me how to mod playstations, phones, pagers, he was an OG hacker/phreaker.
we eventually made cable boxes for people together and split the profits.
          good memories.

You could, but it took forever and tended to be in really bad quality. But mostly you just got this:

I left LimeWire open for a week straight on dial up internet and downloaded Resident Evil when i was like 14. I was pretty astonished you could get a movie from the internet especially if your parents were strict religious types that wouldn't let you watch cool shit. Was the only time I used Limewire for a movie I just grabbed songs after that until torrenting and DSL was a thing.

It took too long for full movies and the quality would be shit. You couldn’t get hd over the internet easily until the 2010s

Just think of it as a precursor to torrents. Don't listen to the poorgays, by 2000 broadband was readily available.

I don't remember if it was Kazaa or Limewire because he used both, but my brother downloaded me a cam of Spy Kids 2. He tried to get me a copy of the Beyblade movie (which wasn't out in English at the time) but I just got some AMV smash cut with some Japanese person's (thankfully, entirely innocent) home video of their kid.

Yep, although my main limewire memory is trying to download Ironman when it came out and instead getting a feature-length french porno.

You could but many people were still using 56k modems and didn't have an entire day to download a full movie. I did regularly download Invader Zim episodes though.

Think all I ever did was use #news for some manga. Never really jumped on the XDCC wagon for most stuff. I was just too used to p2p networks, granted it was often hit or miss with getting what you wanted. This should have made me go for IRC since it would be more curated I assume, get a bad actor and people would talk/ban the bot.

I think the only movie I actually downloaded in full was Shrek 2 and it looked like shit. it really wasn't the best for full movies I think because the files were to big.

Obviously. It just wasn't gunna be much more than some aXXo stuff. Scene at the time wasn't into making huge encodes and stuck to the whole 350-700mb thing. I'm glad that era is over.

I remember downloading the southpark movie which had like 200mb for almost 1 week because i had 56kb dialup. watched that shit like 20 times,

now that i think about it it might actually have been kazaa or napster

  45. 3 months ago

I never really messed with Limewire. By that time torrenting morphed into a shit show and you never knew what you would end up with. The Napster days were great though.
