Part of the problem with Superman is that DC reboots him every time they reboot their universe, as opposed to Batman who (until the New 52) wouldn’t get rebooted.
In the 1980s, they had their big reboot, Crisis On Infinite Earths, and with it came new origin comics. Batman’s was Batman Year One, Superman’s was Man Of Steel.
In 1989, a new Batman title was added named Legends Of The Dark Knight, fleshing out Batman’s early years, and connecting to Year One. Superman/Man Of Steel never got a similar title.
In 2003, they made Superman: Birthright to replace Man Of Steel as Superman’s official origin. This was meant to revamp him for the 21st century, while Batman’s origin remained Batman: Year One.
After Infinite Crisis, Superman: Birthright was replaced with Superman: Secret Origin. Batman’s origin remained Batman: Year One.
The the New 52 happened, and both their origins got revamped.
Then Rebirth happened, and his origin was reset to Secret Origin, while Batman’s stayed the same
It’s kinda screwed up. This is why I say it’s better to not worry about the mainline canon
Also, you should know that there is a small clique of Superman hating autists who spam this board periodically. There’s a dragonball lover who hates Superman cause death battle says he could defeat Goku, one who insists aged up Jon Kent (a very unpopular legacy character) is vastly superior to Clark Kent (this guy outright hates Clark for some reason), one who insists Superman is a pedophile, one third worlder who gets really emotional about the fact that Superman (a fictional character) doesn’t stop real world genocides (he’ll post all-caps screeds on this, stuff like WHY WASN’T THE JUSTICE LEAGUE THERE), and a few more I can’t think of. I don’t even know what Supermanatee poster ()’s endgame is.
I don’t know why he attracts so many speeds, but he does. Don’t be surprised if this threads gets derailed. Hell, it might have been derailed while I was writing this
Oh wow I was right, the speds showed up while I was typing this comment.
Hi speds!
I fricking despise supes hating autist bait posters so goddamn much. especially east vs west goku bait posters
I don’t get why he attracts such autistic hate
Like, he’s not real. Just ignore him if you don’t like him
The bizarre thing is I knew a guy like this IRL who would just volunteer "I HATE Superman!" And you'd ask him why and he'd say "He's too powerful!" And then you'd ask him if he ever even TRIED to read a Superman comic and he hadn't read a single fricking one. I swear the Superman speeds only hate the Superman they created and obsessed over in their mind.
I’m glad I got the warning in the thread before most of them showed up. So OP knows to expect it at least
Doing gods work fren. im also surprised it hasn't been spammed yet. But we did have one wholesome supes thread that didn't get raided a week ago so its the little things
Every schmuck that complains Superman is overpowered creams their pants over One Punch Man and Goku.
Superman is more powerful than both of them tbf
Anything written by Elliot S! Maggin.
I was like this guy for a longer time than I'd like to admit.
I think we're just conditioned to be wary of someone who's strong but not mean. Like we've mistaken meanness for strength or some bullshit.
My first Superman comic was Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow. It is kind of an odd place to start since it is a hypothetical ending for the character but it shows a lot of the essential elements of the character in an interesting way.
I have a friend in my D&D group who saw that I got the recent Mafex Superman figure. She is usually super meek but whenever another friend brought it up she asked me "why in the frick did you buy that?" and said that it kind of pisses her off. When I asked her if she knew anything about Superman comics she said that she "knew enough to know that she doesn't like him" then refused to talk about the subject any more. Supes has a weird hatebase.
its similar to nice people irl. seething autists and normies hate decent and nice things. supes deserves some wholesome threads. its probably because he's the most iconic hero but not edgy. if he was a b lister they wouldn't give a shit. he's a good boy
Stronger than
If you liked Morrison’s Batman you’ll probably enjoy his comic All Star Superman
Superman For All Seasons is one of my favorite comics ever written
I also rec getting a Golden/Silver Age collection
>If you liked Morrison’s Batman you’ll probably enjoy his comic All Star Superman
>Superman For All Seasons is one of my favorite comics ever written
All of these books are non-canon. There's no point in reading them.
My friend. What’s canon now is gonna be non-canon in fifteen to twenty years.
We literally have three different versions of Post-Crisis Superman’s origin alone.
Golden Age Superman used to be the Canon Superman. Then he got retconned into becoming Silver Age Superman. Then Post-Crisis. Then New 52. Then Post-Crisis Again.
If you wanna get into Post Crisis, I suggest entering Joe Kelly’s run.
That’s not true, canonicity has no bearing on quality. I’d actually argue DC’s non-canon stories are generally vastly superior to their mainline continuity
And who says Superman For All Seasons isn’t canon? All Star, yeah, that was never intended to be canon, but For All Seasons?? What de-canonized it?
You can't powerscale non-canon characters though.
Okay Comic Book Guy
>Canon
Comics canon is a fricking joke and has been since before you were born
Neither of those books are non-canon, Seasons was a companion piece to the Man of Steel origin and All-Star Superman is expressly canon to DC One Million
If it's not part of the Metaverse then it's non-canon.
Thank you for your service killing pseuds
>can't spell pseudos*
ngmi
What is a pseudo?
Pseudo intellectual. Someone who think's they're really really smart when they're actually pretty fricking stupid.
“Pseudo-intellectual” is a phrase I’ve heard, pseud is a common shortened version I’ve heard, but I have never in my life heard someone called a “pseudo” and nothing else
Shorthand for "pseudo-intellectual."
>Morrison book
>non-canon
Whya talkin aba ya daft dobber? 'Ers nuffin' canon in Deesee, ken wameen? Yer actin' like a 4th-Dimensional Imp on frickin' Earth-Twa, ya doss c**t.
Gorr?
Man of Steel (Byrne)
Hypertime, homosexual
>All of these books are non-canon. There's no point in reading them.
Imagine your brain operating this way. I thank the good Lord that it's not me.
Akchually anon we're operating under the Everything Is Canon rule currently so your flimsy argument doesn't even hold.
>MUH CANON
Don't listen to this idiot, OP
Morrison's New 52 Action Comics run was alright too
Dude, he's over 80 years old. Throw a dart and start there, except anything made in the last 8-10 years.
Start off with Superman: Son of Kal-El.
Read up to issue #3.
The story then continues off to Action Comics #1036.
DC has these decade collections I really liked. They’ve been out of print for a while but they’re coming back. Superman In The Forties, and now Superman In The Fifties. If you can get your hands on Superman In The Sixties, Superman In The Seventies, and Superman In The Eighties, they’re worth it.
Alternatively, you could get Superman: The Greatest Stories Ever Told
Superman: Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow is intended to be the death of Superman pre Crisis On Infinite Earths, it’s a very good comic
After that, Man Of Steel by John Byrne
I would suggest Superman ‘78, good read of what could’ve been. Pic related
-Superman For All Seasons (Loeb & Sale)
-John Byrne's Man of Steel tpb
-Grant Morrison's All Star Superman
-Superman '78
That's a good starter collection of Superman books and encapsulates his character quite well in all of them.
>John Byrne's Man of Steel tpb
>encapsulates his character quite well
But Byrne's Superman is a groomer pedophile....
That's not in the Man of Steel miniseries though, nice try.
If you want more Morrison try Morrison's Action Comics Run or All Star Superman. Or hell, Morrison's JLA run.
The current Johnson Action Comics run has been great.
Don't read the Bendis run, it's absolute trash.
what issue of Johnson's Action Comics should I start with? is getting volume 1 the best move?
yeah just start at the beginning
Cinemaphile really needs a pinned thread with stuff like this like other boards have.
yeah, I bet it would be way too long of a sticky though. just saved a few of these images just in case
How is 'For The Man Who Has Everything' (Superman Annual #11) not on this list?
I didnt make them just saved them because I also have the same problem OP does trying to find info on comics. maybe if some of the serious autists here wanted to make a dedicated pic instead of shitposting be my guest. newcomers would appreciate it
its possible but I don't have any saved. I'm sure there are old school comic threads that pop up here that may have the answer
I notice this says “modern era” in brackets, is there by any chance a similar image for pre-crisis supes?
and thats all I have saved
All star Superman.
Also fyi Goku wins.
Superman is a gay symbol now.
Unless you want to attend Pride Parades you don't want to be associated with him.
The birth of Bendis and its consequences
Not my supes
It's so blatantly performative af. They knew they'd rightly be crucified if they did it to Clark, so they jumped through hoops to age Jon up so they could make him bi, just so they could market him as "new, bisexual" Superman, and notice none of the manufactured press is about the story or the art, just that Jon is bi and has a boyfriend, it's the most manufactured, empty bullshit.
I wouldn't mind it as much (would still mind it) if the reveal didn't attract the worst people
Well, thank goodness I associate with Superman
and not his bastardized gay son.
Hulk Ultimate Destruction and X-Men Origins Wolverine for xbox as well zoomie
The current Warworld storyline is pretty great
Start with “The One Who Fell” storyline and continues on in Action Comics
Rebirth is also pretty good
I hope you can enjoy Superman’s adventures.
Probably lots, I started with the one you just posted which is Byrne's Man Of Steel. It gives you a brand new origin and everything
Try Morrison's JLA, since his Action Comics run was meh.
joyn byrne run
You got into Batman with morrisons' run?
The frick is wrong with you
Superman: Strength
I love that panel
>Zoomer here,
Boomer anon larping.
It's over anon.
Honestly I don't know what the readers' consensus is on these but it's what got me started on Supes so it holds a special place in my heart. It's not an origin story or anything but it's a pretty comfy read and now it's collected so it's easier to find.
Clark is proud his gay son and supports him, why don't you?
Anon who are you talking to?
