Part of the problem with Superman is that DC reboots him every time they reboot their universe, as opposed to Batman who (until the New 52) wouldn’t get rebooted.
In the 1980s, they had their big reboot, Crisis On Infinite Earths, and with it came new origin comics. Batman’s was Batman Year One, Superman’s was Man Of Steel.
In 1989, a new Batman title was added named Legends Of The Dark Knight, fleshing out Batman’s early years, and connecting to Year One. Superman/Man Of Steel never got a similar title.
In 2003, they made Superman: Birthright to replace Man Of Steel as Superman’s official origin. This was meant to revamp him for the 21st century, while Batman’s origin remained Batman: Year One.
After Infinite Crisis, Superman: Birthright was replaced with Superman: Secret Origin. Batman’s origin remained Batman: Year One.
The the New 52 happened, and both their origins got revamped.
Then Rebirth happened, and his origin was reset to Secret Origin, while Batman’s stayed the same
It’s kinda screwed up. This is why I say it’s better to not worry about the mainline canon
Also, you should know that there is a small clique of Superman hating autists who spam this board periodically. There’s a dragonball lover who hates Superman cause death battle says he could defeat Goku, one who insists aged up Jon Kent (a very unpopular legacy character) is vastly superior to Clark Kent (this guy outright hates Clark for some reason), one who insists Superman is a pedophile, one third worlder who gets really emotional about the fact that Superman (a fictional character) doesn’t stop real world genocides (he’ll post all-caps screeds on this, stuff like WHY WASN’T THE JUSTICE LEAGUE THERE), and a few more I can’t think of. I don’t even know what Supermanatee poster ()’s endgame is.
I don’t know why he attracts so many speeds, but he does. Don’t be surprised if this threads gets derailed. Hell, it might have been derailed while I was writing this

The bizarre thing is I knew a guy like this IRL who would just volunteer "I HATE Superman!" And you'd ask him why and he'd say "He's too powerful!" And then you'd ask him if he ever even TRIED to read a Superman comic and he hadn't read a single fricking one. I swear the Superman speeds only hate the Superman they created and obsessed over in their mind.

My first Superman comic was Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow. It is kind of an odd place to start since it is a hypothetical ending for the character but it shows a lot of the essential elements of the character in an interesting way.

I have a friend in my D&D group who saw that I got the recent Mafex Superman figure. She is usually super meek but whenever another friend brought it up she asked me "why in the frick did you buy that?" and said that it kind of pisses her off. When I asked her if she knew anything about Superman comics she said that she "knew enough to know that she doesn't like him" then refused to talk about the subject any more. Supes has a weird hatebase.

All of these books are non-canon. There's no point in reading them.

My friend. What’s canon now is gonna be non-canon in fifteen to twenty years.

We literally have three different versions of Post-Crisis Superman’s origin alone.

Golden Age Superman used to be the Canon Superman. Then he got retconned into becoming Silver Age Superman. Then Post-Crisis. Then New 52. Then Post-Crisis Again.

If you wanna get into Post Crisis, I suggest entering Joe Kelly’s run.

That’s not true, canonicity has no bearing on quality. I’d actually argue DC’s non-canon stories are generally vastly superior to their mainline continuity
And who says Superman For All Seasons isn’t canon? All Star, yeah, that was never intended to be canon, but For All Seasons?? What de-canonized it?

DC has these decade collections I really liked. They’ve been out of print for a while but they’re coming back. Superman In The Forties, and now Superman In The Fifties. If you can get your hands on Superman In The Sixties, Superman In The Seventies, and Superman In The Eighties, they’re worth it.
Alternatively, you could get Superman: The Greatest Stories Ever Told
Superman: Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow is intended to be the death of Superman pre Crisis On Infinite Earths, it’s a very good comic
After that, Man Of Steel by John Byrne

It's so blatantly performative af. They knew they'd rightly be crucified if they did it to Clark, so they jumped through hoops to age Jon up so they could make him bi, just so they could market him as "new, bisexual" Superman, and notice none of the manufactured press is about the story or the art, just that Jon is bi and has a boyfriend, it's the most manufactured, empty bullshit.
