Spaceflight is difficult and complicated. Shit will go wrong in 11 different ways. A math error is no more or less moronic than a bolt being pried loose by multiple fricking nukes. in the books when the aliens talk to the extremist humans, they realize really quickly that the aliens are really dumb and childlike when it comes to intrigue. The aliens don't know what a lie is because they can read each others thoughts since their brainwaves are visually visible due to them being transparent. When they are unable to do the same to humans it freaks them out because humans can easily trick them, which is one of the reasons why they want to wipe out humanity so much because it is super dangerous to them. It is a pretty major plot point in the second book

they understood what a metaphor is after first time encountering one, so i dont think they are as autistic in the show as you think.

and i read spoilers and i hate what comes up but theres a lot of room here to make an interesting original story with the way current things are set up. i just hate knowing how it ends up, gives me no hope for future seasons unless dnd completely rip the story to shreds. which i hope is what happens.

I don't think they'll rip the story to shreds but the ending probably does gets changed. It's probably too weird for audiences as is and I'd bet they are sensitive after the criticism of GoT's ending.

the ending is fine, humanity gets punished for being selfish and weak and not trying to make sacrifices, while those that seeked to survive and strike out into the abyss despite the consequences become the future. My only criticism is that the main b***h from book 3 didn't die with everybody else like she deserved.

          Anonymous

humanity isnt selfish or weak though, thats just the author coping. probably because hes chinese. in american first contact films the aliens usually get fricked up in the end because animals are essentially wild animals but slightly less dangerous, and humanity's mandate is to snuff out whatever tries to threaten it, aussies legitimately mobilized their military when emus started threatening their farmers and lead a battle against the local population. any good alien story needs to end up in aliens getting herded into pens for questioning and executions, and then humanity deploying on space ships to go frick them upp.

I posted this same thing in the other thread, but I think it's worth repeating because I didn't get a satisfactory answer. It makes little sense to me that the aliens are able to remotely screw with particle accelerators or print numbers into people's vision yet seem limited in other ways. If their plan is to conquer Earth and they have a granular enough level of control to screw with subatomic reactions light years away, they can't do something simple like kill all humans instantly with an engineered virus or something like that.

i find it stupid that alien civilization capable of interstellar travel who is able to build planet sized computer which can transfer data with faster than light speed would ever be scared of humans, even in fricking 400 years we wont even be close to that, not only they can watch our progress and copy everything but also do their own + they can easily delay our research. Also that part when for no reason they revealed the plan to entire world that they are going to kill us is moronic af.

      Anonymous

The idea of civilizational stagnation and rapid progress is a major theme in the books. ie alot of progress can happen in a short amount of time if a civilization is put under the right conditions, so you can never sleep on an enemy that you have a tech lead on. The idea is that if left alone humanity could have a sudden major tech progress explosion that is enough to destroy the expeditionary fleet in 400 years since the fleets tech won't progress.

The author is also probably trying to convey the idea that too much censorship and authoritarianism can stagnate a society as a metaphor for maoist china, and that opening things up is a good thing.

maybe they hibernate during travel, but that also doesnt make sense they have earth sized super computer with advanced AI, it can handle to spy on all research data on earth but cant do it itself, Humans are already losing to a primitive LLM ran on vide game GPUS and singularity will probably mean end of employment for most of us, theres no way super advanced ai cant do research by itself.

Yes. Dead scientists. They bring Ding Ye in to investigate the dead scientists and infiltrate the ETO (They technically do not know it's the ETO yet but they suspect there is foul play from an organization).

Why couldn't the aliens travel to another planet and terraform it? Are they just so autistic that they need someone else to politely invite them to come over?

Aliens only have one planet in their solar system. Nearest solar system is Earth's. Time is a factor as their planet could be destroyed at any time.

They evolved and repeatedly got near extinct in a triple star system which is rare itself, no time for terraforming. Their fleet was already in space when they made contact with earth. According to the dark forest hypothesis which was inspired by the book, if first radio contact is made it is kill or be killed as humans would scientifically surpass them before they reach earth. Humans would likely destroy their home world and fleet first, that is their logic.

I'm no expert, but I think the Chinese censors do read the book.

It's really not that cool unless you really don't like reading. Adapting word for word means the pacing is atrocious and it's not a story that is super elevated by strong acting or visuals even if the show had them.

they never show themselves, but we get some descriptions of what they are like. They can travel really fast enough that the "human computer" idea actually works for them. They are transparent and have lights that flash inside them (another reason the human computer works) and these lights also reveal they are thinking so they can't lie to each other. They can also dehydrate themselves like a tardigrade sort of and keep themselves alive for very long periods.

Dimension just means property. You see 3 dimensions but there are other properties like smell.
Then there are other properties we can't perceive. It's suggested everything is made of waves, which is a lot easier to conceptualize if you go read about discrete cosine transformation; how images are compressed.
Lastly there is the idea some dimensions are 'the same direction', like entropy and time increase in the same direction.

The eye in the sky is not a sophon. I mean, it is in the show, I suppose. In the books the eye is an advanced species Trisolarians unfolded by accident from within a photon into their upper 3rd dimension, which they had to kill. They kept it in the show and I guess it is an unfolded sophon in the show, but that's not for sure.

The Trisolarians did not have an easy time making the sophons, and once out of fricking nowhere after unfolding a photon they were attacked by some weird ass evangelian angel type monster that looked kind of like an eye. They blew it up pretty quickly, and just tried to not think about wtf had just happened. I don't think it was ever brought up again.

I think it was supposed to be a hint at the higher dimension beings from the third book who lived in the four dimensional space bubble because they couldn't survive in the three dimensional universe.

                >Lived in the 4D bubble
You mean the grave they met before they destroyed the droplet from within? I was under the impression that 4D grave they met was actually the same thing that happened to our solar system when it was flattened into 2D, but they were originally a 5D species who could not survive in only 4D. I actually haven't finished the very last chapter of book 3, and I heard it actually flat out states what I suspected about the 4D grave, but idk.

                Anonymous

If I remember correctly the bubble was gradually collapsing into 3D just like our solar system collapsed into 2D, and the 4D beings inside would be killed when it did so, hence the 4D space being a grave but it's been a few years since I read.

                Anonymous

Yeah, they met a grave floating in 4D space which had an AI they could talk to, but that was because I assume their society was flattened from 5D space and to them 4D space is like 2D is to us, which is why their grave is floating within 4D space. I started reading all 3 books when the year started, so some of it is fairly fresh in my memory.

                Anonymous

The implication is the 4d area was just a remnant of the 4d universe that was traveling about via some force. They imply the collapsing of dimensions imparts a force on everything akin to what we know as dark energy. I like how the author couldn't even explain his 4d bubble universe shit so they just say "its too hard to explain" and then they give the 4d thing a fish and leave.

I tend to believe it was just a grave for a 4d civ that was aware that the space it occupied was collapsing, because it was fully functional and recognizable as a monument within the 4g space

                Anonymous

Hmmm. Well, your explanation also kinda makes sense. But if you had the time to make a GOOD grave, instead of just tossing your paintings out into space like Saul/Luo Ji did, then I bet some type of big AI structure that could operate in a lower dimension would be what you'd make.

There were a lot of other graves, which I assume were other 5D species that got flattened because of 5D dark forest attacks. That 4D bubble was just a big graveyard, but the shrinking of 4D space wasn't what killed them, it was just the end of their graveyard.

I still think my theory makes more sense.

Why didn't they realize that the actual issue was the human extremists and not the aliens? All they had to do was weed out and infiltrate and wipe them out. The aliens can't tell if humans are lying, they shouldn't be able to tell if their human collaborators get replaced. They have 400 years to find the human traitors and then feed the aliens shit info that makes them fly into the solar system's version of Detroit

Our conflict with the TriSols gets sort of dwarfed as the story goes on.

Thats not exactly true. It is implied that both Humanity and the Trisolarans go on to build a lasting presence in the universe 10's of millions of years into the future.

    Too many interracial couples.

It has been proven that when shown images of interracial couples, scientists literally found the same stress proteins in people's saliva that they find when showing people images of maggots.

This is the reason why they constantly spam interracial couples. The typical brain response of white men and women seeing IR couples of the opposite sex is stress, threat, and disgust. ((They)) want white people to be in a constant state of flight or fight and despair, unable to have healthy productive lives beyond being tax cattle. Aware that we’re going extinct but helpless to do anything about it

I like the approach of doing all 3 books at once. They didn't do a good job of establishing why the nanomaterial was important though. no mention of space elevators and apparently they are just going to build ships on the moon for some frickin reason? Didn't hate any of the characters except Auggie who is unfortunately going to be sticking around filling the role of AA obviously. Wonder if they will have the pajeet be Zhang Behai

I think you missed quite bit, but it all does go by so quickly.
      >Moon
Jin tells Wade forcing Sophons to go to/from the moon will help reduce what they can pull off.
      >Nanoparticle
Used in the sail but yeah no mention of space elevator yet
      >Auggie
But if she is also Saul's dream girl then she'll have to go to sleep at some point
My favorite change is how there are now nearly 300 nukes already in space from the early failure of staircase, so Saul can use those to do deterence.

you're right anon I've had a few and I was thinking more about the books than what was explained in the show. I hope you are right about Auggie but she is also the cheng xin stand-in's best friend so I'm not optimistic. hopefully they are both on ice for most of season 2 for Dark Forest kino

They clearly are going to on some level with what's been set up. I wouldn't bet on it sticking to it too much, but I don't really care because that's what the chink version and books are for.

The 2D solar system was completely moronic.
I understand that all the science in the books is based on string theory and in string theory, folding space into a lower dimension can make sense. But the fact that character can SEE the 2D solar system is completely deranged, how the frick is light travelling in and out of 2D space, why is something in 2D space reflecting light in a non 2D direction. It literally describes people getting turned into flat Stanley. Complete nonsense for a series that's 'HARD' sci-fi. Might look cool on on the show though.

          >space reflecting light in a non 2D direction
Because we're in a higher dimension and can observe lower dimensions just fine. That's how it is. The ray reflecting off on that axis wouldn't mean anything to flatlanders, but its no problem for us.
