It was only ever planned for a small global distribution, with barely 1,000 theatres in the US slated to screen it at first, but has now been extended to around 2,500 due to unexpected success. It's the same story here in Britbongistan, was originally only going to be shown at 296 venues, but then just last week that was announced to be going up to 469
Even with the extensions, those are still pretty small numbers (Napoleon, for example, had 3,500 theatres, and even the Beyonce movie had a release of 2,539 theatres), but it's still clearly exceeding any expectations

Maybe for someone who is a certified kino autist but just hasn't dipped into Godzilla yet. For jow blow normie and especially some moronic zoomer I wouldn't recommend this path. Even if they get through 1954 Raids is gonna filter the frick out of them.

            G2K
            GMK
            Kiryu Saga
            vs. Biollante
            Mechagodzilla II
            vs. Destoroyah
and then try out some showa if you want. Final Wars should not be watched until you have some Showa under your belt imo.

Skipping most of the Heisei continuity but still watching Godzilla vs Destoroyah is moronic. You won't get anything out of Godzilla's death if you didn't watch the other movies in the series. Just start with 1984 and watch all of them.

It’s very much a pro-war movie, not a lot of saying they should let Godzilla run rampant in that. 100 percent behind fighting the invader who destroyed their cities. Instead it’s a pro support the troops movie. Fighting needs to be done and it needs to be done by brave everyday folks like you, but they also should be doing so planning to lose as little lives as possible, because the common soldiers life is still valuable and they deserve to come home. It’s up to normal folks to do that because the government doesn’t care about them and needs to stay out of their way.

And when they come home they deserve to be a family, don’t let your would be wife go off to work or a giant nuke dinosaur will explode her or something I dunno

I think you're looking at it backwards, and then admit as much, in a way
But art is up to interpretation and the ideology of Godzilla could have been lost along the way. I mean he still uses ATOMIC breath.
That said, it's a much more defensive film. Godzilla is coming to them, destroying their cities. They clearly don't want that. They defend themselves and retaliate, but they're not going to war, war is coming to them.

          You follow up with
          >because the common soldiers life is still valuable and they deserve to come home.
But it's always been the common person's life is valuable and they don't deserve to be sent to battle over these things. Godzilla should have never been created (in universe) because he's, you know, the atomic bomb.

It was one of the most cliche and by the numbers movies ive ever seen. Literally no different than a typical American blockbuster in terms of writing and acting. The reception here for this movie is literally just the "thing" "thing JAPAN" meme.

lolno, not even close. It was a very "Japanesey" movie. No American movie would imply that the kamikaze pilots weren't mindless fanatics. They also would have made the female MC a single mom to a mixed-race baby rather than a pure waifu who adopted an orphan. A Hollywood movie also wouldn't have treated the subject matter of Godzilla seriously in this day and age. It would've been some marvelslop imitation rather than being played straight.

Shin takes itself very seriously but its just the same 2 or 3 ideas hammered down to the audience the entire movie, and not in a clever, entertaining way. When Anno wants to criticize the excessive bureaucracy of the japanese government he just...spends an hour showing bureaucratic, boring, pointless meetings instead of using cinematic language, a good script and clever editing techniques to achieve the same goal in a better way. But the movie certainly FEELS like it has a lot to say, its the perfect pleb catcher for pseuds.

The scene with the meeting about if Godzilla is real or not really sticks out to me as just bad film making. It's upsetting because Anno clearly knows how to direct a scene which can convey the atmosphere without spending five minutes to establish it as the third act shows.

This is the type of film that you won't get shamed for watching solo. Don't miss out on a kino Godzilla theater experience because you care what others think. No one gives a shit and if they do...that speaks more on them.

Limited release, not opted for streaming services (in the works now). There's a torrent of a cam, which I would watch even with subtitles, if it wasn't for obnoxious watermarks and casino ads on the screen for 100% of the runtime.

the ending was cheap in multiple ways. tricking the audience by not showing them the ejection seat. but it was the last 10 minutes of the movie and everything until then was good so all is forgiven

            Anonymous

It was obvious there was an ejection seat, the tension was whether or not the mechanic had fricked with it.

              Anonymous

even if that were true, it's not good to move the angst that the main character has been struggling with the whole film to a supporting one that we have only had 5 minutes of screentime with. What would have been lost if we saw the scene in order? Everyone would rather see the struggle over whether he would eject or not at the last minute, instead of what a side character did

              Anonymous

To me it was less about if the mechanic messed with the ejection seat and more about if Koichi resolved to kill himself. The mechanic telling him about it and telling him to live was a twist, but it was obvious to anyone with eyes that the Japs wouldn't be importing German seats if they were just normal seats and it was ultimately still Koichi's decision. He had agency and he made the decision himself.

I've said this before: (spoilers) The woman surviving in the end wasn't a cheap move because it was thematically relevant, just because most movies do this for no reason doesn't mean it's always bad

      Anonymous

No, it was not thematically relevant.
The whole ''don't throw your life away for nothing'' was aimed at Koichi beucase...he was a kamikaze pilot who disobeyed orders to die for nothing when there wasn't even hope of Japan winning the war anymore. Noriko would have sacrificed herself for a noble purpose, to save the man she loved (and was indebted to), its not even remotely the same. Koichi not kamizaking into Godzilla's mouth when he has the option to eject at the last second was thematically relevant.

        Anonymous

Avenging Noriko's death was one of the main reasons he decided to do a kamikaze attack on Godzilla, showing that she hadn't died illustrated how wrong he was for thinking that way.

          Anonymous

What? He only discovered she was still alive AFTER his decision to eject and live. It has absolutely no weight on his character arc and felt like a hamfisted attempt at a happy ending and/or cliffhanger for the sequel with her neck thing.

            Anonymous

It has weight be cause it was at that moment he could realise how wrong he was and how he just avoided making a huge mistake. And the message wasn't just for him, it was the Doctor who had that whole speech about valuing life, it's was the general theme of the movie.

              Anonymous

The message wasn't ''self-sacrifice for the people you love is bad'', it was ''sacrificing yourself for nothing is bad''. Koichi already had a very strong reason to keep living, the little girl. He also got closure with all his war trauma and social shame (with all the ex-soldiers saluting him). Noriko played no part in any of that and her being alive only cheapens the entire movie.

                Anonymous

The ending is tragic because she is clearly dying from radiation and Godzilla will regenerate

                Anonymous

I know, but we could have had a definitive ending, where Godzilla is defeated for good, Noriko stays dead and there is no zilla-aids contamination. The movie would be air tight, close to perfection. The new movies could focus on different ideas and Minus One would stand on its own as one of the best Godzilla movies.

Likeable characters, clear themes, interesting social commentary, well-done action scenes. I would even call it an almost "classical" movie, in the sense that it has a clear vision from a talented filmmaker in a way that big budget action films have lacked for a long time.

The best hope is to panic them. If shit movies cost 200 million dollars and a Japanese crew can do it for 15 million there is a problem.

        Anonymous

I keep seeing people say the 15 million figure is just because the Japanese film industry underpays VFX artists; while I'm sure it does, even with better pay I can't imagine it would take the budget up by more than a couple million.

          Anonymous

All VFX artists are underpaid. I can't understand how G-1 cost so little though. Ignore all the VFX scenes and what you have is a period costume drama with scenes shot on seawater, miniatures, a big animatronic head (which is why the boat chase sequence works: the focus is on Godzilla's face a lot and not the CGI), and many extras.

Going by the consensus: the budget savings were from hiring mostly people who can't act. This option isn't available to Hollywood because they already overpay their awful actors, and don't write better material for the rest. Minus One was Dwayne Johnson tier acting in a Tom Hanks tier film, like if Rampage had been good.

            Anonymous

Jap actors are not paid that much, Toho has a big pool for all the water scenes, and the director of the movie also led the VFX team.

Shin slices the entire city in half, destroys everything, shoots lasers 360 from its back and the first scene where it uses atomic breath is insanely dark and destructive. My friend preferred Barbie to this movie. He said that Barbie had a more fleshed out inner conflict compared to Shikishima's one-note journey. While I agree Margot Robbie's performance was great, her adventure wasn't very interesting and it's throttled by people complaining. Is it over for me or him?

      Anonymous

It's fine to like one over the other, both were good movies, but different types of stories
Barbie is about her quest, but the stuff about how the past has affected the present is about the doll, and not what the character has done
Rightly or wrongly, the people blamed Shikishima for what happened because of Godzilla. And the movie isn't called Shikishima Minus One, the most important character is the villain, whereas Barbie is the hero of her movie.

I think it's important to remember that he was probably like 18-19 when this happened. Average of a Kamikaze pilot was 17-20 and he was definitely supposed to be on the younger side. He basically was a teenager with a shit ton of PTSD that was grappling with the fact he was now having to raise a family in a war torn society.

Yeah it was a immature reaction, but it was also a pretty realistic one. He was trying to do the "correct" thing but didn't exactly know how; that's why his elders scolded him but weren't angry with him because they understood what he was going through to a certain extent. That was probably one of my favorite part of the movie was his relationship with the ship crew and how they basically took over has his anchor for a lot of the film.

I'll admit that Noriko staying dead would have been the better ending. Her sacrificing herself to save Koichi was a beautiful act that shows how much she cares about him and that he deserves to live. Like some Anon said the movie should have ended with him hugging Akiko and accepting her as his daughter. Noriko's death would have been a statement on how important life is and that the people who love us shouldn't be taken for granted. That being said, I like the actual ending more. This movie managed to make me feel for this war torn, makeshift family. I'm happy that she lived because I think she deserved to too, and now they have a chance to become a real family.

Violently killing off the female MC halfway through would have been very out of left field for a Toho movie, let alone a Godzilla movie. I'm glad it ended the way it did, since it represented Koichi getting his life back after finding the courage to live.

The ending represents how many people survived the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but were left disfigured by them. Noriko survived the explosion but the giant metaphor (Godzilla) has touched her. She is no longer pure. It's the perfect ending and it makes perfect sense considering what happened after the bombings with the survivors.

Fair enough I suppose. I haven't seen any Korean movies in the theater personally, so I can't really speak to that. I don't think the Korean movies that have made it to the theaters here were action blockbuster types either.

            Anonymous

There are lots of lower budget films coming out of the West, Koreans have made huge strides in the last 15 years if we’re talking Asia. Japanese films just look cheap and amateurish, after the revenge film trend died out they’re output just seemed to diminish. I love film in general so it’s not a deal breaker, I didn’t hate shin but my expectations were way off from the hype. It really just felt thing Japan, comparing to something like pacific rim it looks like a fan film and the office scenes had acting that just shouldn’t be considered acceptable in my opinion.

Shin was good but Shin was also really weird. This one feels more Hollywood and the effects are legit good. It's only melodramatic, so you may or may not like that.

        Anonymous

The weirdness was the best part of the film, but everything surrounding the novel concept just felt tacky, it had some really bold scenes that were filmed well but the majority of the film looked like a soap opera and the acting was about on apr with one as well. I’ve watched hundreds of Japanese films so I get they have overall poor acting standards but it can work, but so many of the human scenes were so fricking bland it was like having the breaks pumped on a roller coaster.

The two post-WWII dramas were the Always Sunset on Third Street movies, they're comfy dramas. But I guess they still have to involve SFX because they take place in a Tokyo that doesn't exist anymore.

Oh post-WW2. I guess he just really likes over the top drama. Would've been a 10/10 with some more subtle acting. Or maybe it was B-list actors like

Minus One was Dwayne Johnson tier acting in a Tom Hanks tier film, like if Rampage had been good.

        said.
