MCU has singlehandedly destroyed the film industry.
It hasn't. Big budget action flicks are the only thing keeping movie theaters open these days.
The cost of going to the movies and the change of small CRT 4:3 TVs to high definition widescreen made movie theatres overpriced and redundant. Were movies like I Love You Man or Get Him to the Greek funnier than something like The Office? No, Did the theatre experience elevate the comedy? Clearly not enough, so only movie that can offer something TV don't offer are left.
Horror, Art House, Family Movies (kids content that is well crafted and aren't insufferable to watch as an adult) and big Tent Pole movie experiences, be it the new superhero movie or the new Tarantino or Wes Anderson.
B movies, comedies and chick flicks are dead because you don't need movie format to do that anymore. It's modern TV and streaming that killed it. Not Marvel.
Asteroid city made little money and when I saw it three weeks after release it was the night it was leaving the theater and I was alone aside from a few employees that stuck around to watch for free
The point I was trying to make was that big name artistic Directors are one of the few things the industry puts it's faith in today. Studios want some form of pre installed fan base. People like Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Scorsese are the only people in Hollywood that can get an original script greenlite today. Asteroid city may have under performed but that wasn't really the point i was trying make.
Also Asteroid City was his most "meta" movie and the reviews were more mixed then his other work.

It's kind of true. Another example of this logic is Bollywood. All of their movies, from action to drama, all require a dance number. The mentality behind it is that audiences require the equivalent of "Jingly keys" to keep them focused on anything. That is the mentality of MCU films, they never let anything get too serious because they Believe the audience will tune out.
I haven't bothered with the MCU in years, but I'd be all over a comedy. Too bad they just don't make those all that much anymore.

I remember when Netflix streaming first came out and had a ton of forgotten and average/mediocre movies, me and some friends in college killed time by watching one of the lesser gene Wilder/Richard Pryor comedies. It was not a great movie, but it was much funnier watching it at home with friends. And even before that,t here's a ton of comedy movies that didn't get popular until home video and TV airings

The logic is if you're going to spend money to go to a theater then it better be some amazing cg spectacle to be worth it. Higher production values are being associated with more value even if it's some cg slopfest.
I think part of it is that comedies many times are made for people to get stoned while can’t get stoned in theaters. As pot became even more prevalent people would rather spend 20 on a couple of joints from the store and watch something on Netflix than 20 to go to a movie.

Overal big budget movies have ruined cinema. The need to turn a profit over the budget, this is even before marketing and advertisement has made it so IP with brand recognition are only used.
By used I mean reboots, sequels and that sort of thing. Also the need for producer to meddle with test screening and reshoots already adding to the overblown budget.
