>"I think Marvel ruined it," DeVine explained. "Superhero movies ruined comedies because you go to the theater and you expect to watch something that cost $200 million to make. And comedy movies aren’t that. So, you’re like, ‘Why would I spend the same amount of money to watch a little comedy in the theater if I can spend the same amount of money that is worth $200 million?' And they also make those movies funny. I mean, they’re not comedies, but it’s like, ‘Oh my god, is that racoon talking? This is hilarious!’"

MCU has singlehandedly destroyed the film industry.
It hasn't. Big budget action flicks are the only thing keeping movie theaters open these days.
The cost of going to the movies and the change of small CRT 4:3 TVs to high definition widescreen made movie theatres overpriced and redundant. Were movies like I Love You Man or Get Him to the Greek funnier than something like The Office? No, Did the theatre experience elevate the comedy? Clearly not enough, so only movie that can offer something TV don't offer are left.
Horror, Art House, Family Movies (kids content that is well crafted and aren't insufferable to watch as an adult) and big Tent Pole movie experiences, be it the new superhero movie or the new Tarantino or Wes Anderson.
B movies, comedies and chick flicks are dead because you don't need movie format to do that anymore. It's modern TV and streaming that killed it. Not Marvel.
Asteroid city made little money and when I saw it three weeks after release it was the night it was leaving the theater and I was alone aside from a few employees that stuck around to watch for free
The point I was trying to make was that big name artistic Directors are one of the few things the industry puts it's faith in today. Studios want some form of pre installed fan base. People like Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Scorsese are the only people in Hollywood that can get an original script greenlite today. Asteroid city may have under performed but that wasn't really the point i was trying make.
Also Asteroid City was his most "meta" movie and the reviews were more mixed then his other work.
cinema wouldn't even exist anymore without Marvel
and that's a good thing.
>Why would I spend the same amount of money to watch a little comedy in the theater if I can spend the same amount of money that is worth $200 million
What kind of bizarro logic is this? Is this clown ESL or something?
It's true. Same reason CG animated movies killed hand drawn.
except that didn't happen with anime
It's definitely getting there. Almost every anime uses CG now in one way or the other. It's an especially common trend for it to be used in action-heavy scenes sadly.
Background crowds are almost all CG nowadays.
Japs have just been slower at learning how to code. They're getting there though.
Cg anime sucks
It's kind of true. Another example of this logic is Bollywood. All of their movies, from action to drama, all require a dance number. The mentality behind it is that audiences require the equivalent of "Jingly keys" to keep them focused on anything. That is the mentality of MCU films, they never let anything get too serious because they Believe the audience will tune out.
I haven't bothered with the MCU in years, but I'd be all over a comedy. Too bad they just don't make those all that much anymore.
Blockbuster movies have hurt alot of things but streaming and home video before that doomed comedies in theaters m, along with $20 tickets
I remember when Netflix streaming first came out and had a ton of forgotten and average/mediocre movies, me and some friends in college killed time by watching one of the lesser gene Wilder/Richard Pryor comedies. It was not a great movie, but it was much funnier watching it at home with friends. And even before that,t here's a ton of comedy movies that didn't get popular until home video and TV airings
>check ticket prices nearby
>even the dead matinee hours are on average $15 plus "convenience" fee
Wow I've been out of the loop for a while. This fricking blows.
The logic is if you're going to spend money to go to a theater then it better be some amazing cg spectacle to be worth it. Higher production values are being associated with more value even if it's some cg slopfest.
I think part of it is that comedies many times are made for people to get stoned while can’t get stoned in theaters. As pot became even more prevalent people would rather spend 20 on a couple of joints from the store and watch something on Netflix than 20 to go to a movie.
It did some damage but it hardly killed it, cheap comedy and action flicks still come out regularly
>‘Oh my god, is that racoon talking? This is hilarious!’"
Oh no, he's an idiot.
You made yourself out to be an idiot by not understanding that he's obviously mocking the people he's imagining
So now he's even more of an idiot?
No anon. I don't know how to tell you this but, YOU are most likely moron. I know this comes as a bit of shock but you should probably consult a doctor about your low intelligence.
You know irony isn't even in the dictionairy.
>No anon. I don't know how to tell you this but, YOU are most likely moron.
Is the reason you don't know how to tell me this comes from your poor writing abilities?
Shut up you bloody mother fricker. You stupid buttholes.
But no one finds Rocket hilarious just because he's a talking racoon.
But that's the entire joke of Rocket. His whole shtick is being angry at the disrespect that goes his way for being a small talking animal and how crude and capable he is despite being cute.
Not a defense of the MCU but I don't think I've seen a single good thing with that guy in it.
FRICK YOU OFFICE gay WORKAHOLICS IS AMAZING
>workaholics
>the poor man's corporate
Just give up
>Blaming an unrelated thing for your own shitty comedy
Maybe write comedies that aren’t TOTAL SHIT holy frick.
99% of the issues in movies could be solved with good writing.
Just go to the corner store and buy the magical Good Writing Juice and pour it over a script and voila! You have a magically good script- it’s that easy!
I'd see his movies in theatre if they weren't shit.
He's not wrong though.
Blockbusters justify the hassle of a movie theater with their spectacle.
A big screen and expensive sound system make special effects better. They do nothing for dated stoner jokes.
>Honey, we NEED to see this movie, I mean LOOK at the budget!
What a moron
>The latest Adam Sandler flick that's scripted, shot, and edited within a single weekend and only exists so Adam and his friends can embezzle production money
>The latest Kevin James flick that's scripted, shot, and edited within a single weekend and only exists so Kevin and his friends can embezzle production money
>The latest Melissa McCarthy movie where the joke is she's fat
>Some millennial dramedy about identity politics
>Remake/reboot/sequel of a classic that manages to be worse in every regard
Comedy movies killed themselves
This. Anyone trying to blame the MCU for that when you can blatantly see the problems comedy has had in the last decade, is in serious cope mode
>it's a horror-comedy where the joke is "haha, horror cliches" as if it wasn't already stale by the time the second Scream movie came out
This one's kinda personal, I hate horror "comedies" so much it's unreal because whenever I look for a decent genuine horror, there's a high chance I find another subversive schlock instead.
tbh i kinda like Ghostface because he's a flailing moron who scrambles after people frantically. It makes it a whole lot more tense knowing you can throw him off if you hit him with enough shit to get away rather than instadeath.
I give Scream (original movies, frick everything post Wes Craven's death) a pass because they're more or less original. I'll even give Leslie Vernon a pass because it was made by someone who knows and has a passion for the genre. Everything after is just groanworthy to me, though.
Oh shit, Wes Craven died?
Yes, in 2015.
Well, no wonder I forgot.
>the movie where the joke is all dude weed
>the movie where the joke is we're all ghetto
The simpsons predicted this shit during the last temptation of krusty episode.
because it was already happening in the late 90's
Disney Ruins EVERYTHING they touch and abuse, and is well known since the late 90's.
And they always wanted to force stronk womyn since that period
Barbie literally just made a billion dollars
It's based on a popular toy, has big stars attached to it and was part of a viral meme.
It's not even just down to dominance of blockbuster franchises, the rise of streaming has played a big hand in screwing over the cinema landscape.
>Adam DeVine
Who?
What was the last straight comedy that was a big success? Hangover 2? They were dead/dying before Marvel swallowed the entire industry.
The way these homosexuals blame the mcu for everything is just like the way politicians talk about video games.
They're just looking for opportunities now that MCU is being panned.
who?
>Cinemaphile - Comics & Cartoons
>Everyone reporting on what was basically a shitpost on their shitposting podcast
Even when I was watching theater movies. Can't say I ever stopped and asked "I gotta see this because Y spent X amount of dollars to make"
Are people getting paid to see shit and I'm just doing it wrong?
Basically, publicly reporting budgets and box offices numbers were mistakes and now we have to deal with idiots screeching about flops, forever.
It's more about shit like hype.
Like when was the last time you saw a commercial or trailer for a comedy and thought you absolutely needed to see it asap to avoid spoilers or something like that? That entire genre is more of a "I'll catch it when it's on TV" kind of thing.
Not him, but Daddy's Home 2 was a good watch on theatres. Of course that was some 6 years ago.
“waaaahhhhh why cant i say Black person and homosexual anymore”
Adam Devine of all people being this right. Based
Who's more responsible? MCU for succeeding? Or other film franchises trying to copy them and failing?
Do film fans not take any blame for the popularity of capeshit?
You guys are miserable fricks who blame Marvel for the world's collapse. 1B for fricking Barbie? You did this. It's your fricking fault! Especially DCgays who never had one single hit film.
>Especially DCgays who never had one single hit film.
Joker and Aquaman topped a billion.
Joker had a LOT of controversy surrounding it, thus giving it considerable free promotion.
It made more than black panther and black panther had people like Serena Williams paying for entire cinema complexes for kids to see it for free.
The news, conversely, was telling people not to do to joker otherwise they might get killed.
>Aquaman
Underwater action spectacle that has never been really seen before. And it had no competition in December, a month were legs are generally strong for films.
>Joker
Controversial movie. I didn't even give a shit about superhero movies when this came out and I still heard alot about it. I almost went to see it because I wanted to understand what everyone was complaining about.
These are one hit wonders due to luck and will flop with the sequels.
That's not how people think at all, and it's sort of weird for him to frame the argument like that. Makes me wonder if it's a real quote because it's so stupid.
I feel like Marvel doing their thing is the perfect time to release a comedy. Show them how it's done.
Overal big budget movies have ruined cinema. The need to turn a profit over the budget, this is even before marketing and advertisement has made it so IP with brand recognition are only used.
By used I mean reboots, sequels and that sort of thing. Also the need for producer to meddle with test screening and reshoots already adding to the overblown budget.
Look at me maw! I'm critical drinker!
People just wait for them to hit streaming, back then people wanted to go out and see a movie, or otherwise rent it on DVD which had limited options. But now you can find any comedy just off your phone. Comedy movies just don't have enough leg to stand on.
This is the guy that try to make a comedy spoof of Die Hard.
>He's mad his movie on netflix is a snoozefest and probably spent that much in its budget.
Brother Kelvin Gemstone is absolutely right about this even if he's made a few shitty comedies himself.
he says this now, but jennifer lawrence has a hard R comedy coming out soon that will make money. adam just needs to be funnier
He's correct in his assessment
