He didn't have a cause. We just have a rebellious spirit within us in our youth. btw, super weird ass movie that made little to no sense

Why do you think he was called the rebel without a cause, moron?

Wait a minute, you mean to tell me that the protagonist in the film Rebel Without A Cause was a rebel without a cause?

      >bad writing is excusable if the title of the movie explains it to you

It's a pretty relatable feeling, even most normies get it. You'd have to be the normiest of normies not to get it.

yes, 70s Hollywood is generally regarded as the lowest artistic point in the history of american filmmaking

IT IS OVER FOR JAMES DEAN

I watched this years ago so I might not remember much and maybe somethings went over my head because it was a rather disinterested watching.

I just couldnt have any sympathy for Deans character. It seems like he doesnt know what he wants, but whenever something doesnt go the way he wants it to go, he throws a tantrum like a toddler.

He has parents who care for him, tell him they love him, they help him whenever he needs them to but somehow thats not enough and not even he can pinpoint what irks him about it all. Frankly he comes across as a spoiled brat.

It's more rebelling against the suburban culture that has a strict code on how you should look and act. Middle class families looking to emulate ruling class families in the 50s started it and we are slowly breaking away from it.

Thankfully purity culture and going to church on sundays are not as prevalent. Yeah you have a "future" with a "loving family" but not really. College, job, fatherhood, work till death. Cog in a machine.

Not Defending this movie in particular just the trope in general.

If I had acted out like Jim I would have caught a beating. We did mischief and shit as teenagers and got in fights with my brother over stupid shit, but Jims mischief just seems attention seeking, then he spergs out when he gets attention. I guess I just had better impulse control as a teenager.
