I just wanted to make the very same thread.
After The Last Wish they started botching EVERYTHING..
Bad Guys - cute furry bait with franchise potential. Let's do a half assed special animated by pajeets!
Megamind - cult classic. Let's make a sequel straight to streaming that is animated by pajeets and is the opposite of what the original Megamind was writing wise.
Hire CHARLIE FRICKING KAUFMAN to write your movie and then proceed to half ass everything about it, obviously block Kaufman from doing his thing to the fullest potential, obviously rewrite shit until it stops having ANY appeal, dump it on Netflix.
Kung-Fu Panda 4 everyone is discussing how they fricked up with it this very moment. What's worse is that it's gonna make decent money so they won't be learning from their mistakes.
    Embarrassing all around.

Kung Fu Panda's worst crime is that much like Shrek the series has gone on for so long people are somewhat tired of it. You can't make sequels forever. Sooner or later audiences get burned out. Look at Pirates of the Caribbean as another example. The original kung fu Panda generation are young adults with their own fresh families and kids prefer finding their own media to be entertained by. They don't tend to want to get into the same thing as their parents unless it's a SUPER juggernaut on a global scale like Pokemon. No generation of human can escape that one.

You say that yet The Last Wish is a Shrek spinoff, set in the world of Shrek and featuring characters from those movies. It's the sixth Shrek film and everyone loved it. Any franchise can make a turnaround, it's about how you do it.
        >and kids prefer finding their own media to be entertained by
That's why they made this fourth one though, and its probably why its doing so good at the box office since kids are finding out about these movies that way. The movie works as a soft reset and kids can go see it.

TLW is kind of an exception to the rule, not mention it does help that the universe of Shrek is based on universally known fairy tales that have already passed the test of time between generations.

            >exception to the rule
But it proves it can happen. And the KFP universe is set in China, which has a lot of history of martial arts, battles, culture, animals and folklore to use. It’s not like toy story where they’re always set in streets from the United States, it’s a magical world you can do anything with

      >Megamind
For the last fricking time, that's not made by the same studio, it's their TV division. It's like getting upset about the Madagascar baby show, literally who gives a flying frick about some cheap ass 3D show you will never see anyways. You and all the other freaks treating it like a major release are more embarrassing than Dreamworks could ever be.

Dreamworks is incredibly mercurial. One day you have instant classics like How To Train Your Dragon, the next you've got the c**ting Boss Baby.
I feel like the Megamind debacle is the result of them putting one of their cheap-ass TV studios on the job, and instead of having it BE a cheap-ass TV series, they just bashed the episodes together into a terrible, terrible movie.

Dreamworks has never been anything other than Hit and Miss. And mostly miss. They do steady enough to not die, but overall I wouldn't call them a great studio. Even when they hit it big they don't seem to cash out as Disney. For one thing Dreamworks has never had a Frozen Mania style phenomenon. Not even Shrek their most famous property is that successful.

And anyone else think their new movie Wild Robot is a rip off of Wall E? A movie about a silent robot? While I doubt the Wild Robot will meet obese humans the similarities are notable.

Anon, Wild Robot is based on a pretty popular children’s book series.

I know and its getting adapted. No different from How To Train Your Dragon, book series that Dreamworks adapted. No different from Shrek, a book that Dreamworks adapted. Never said it was an original idea by Dreamworks.

And if the book was created before Wall E then they failed to get onto the spotlight on time because most animation fans will inevitably compare it to Wall E.

Dreamworks has always been extremely hit or miss. The studio itself is going through major changes which may explain why a lot of their recent stuff (not including the new Trolls movie since that was surprisingly decent and the production of it went without issue) is very mid.

      Anonymous

I still don't understand how the Trolls trilogy is successful. The characters look so damn ugly that I don't want to see them. And yes I've seen the old Trolls designs for the figurines those things are hideous. Dreamworks made them less ugly but they are still ugly.

Catchy music, a sense of humor that parents can appreciate while their kids watch, and really pretty visuals allowed Trolls to blossom into a good moneymaker for the studio.

To me the funniest Dreamworks movies are the Madagascr trilogy. I can still give those movies a watch and get a laugh. Not even Shrek can beat those movies in being comedic.

While Dreamworks is not that great they are still better than Laika, illumination, and Sony Animation, and when they were independent Blue Sky.

Laika is superior simply for being one guy's long-running passion project with no real interest in profitability or mass appeal, unlike Dreamworks being Katzenberg's corporate prostitute

The only Laika movie I liked was Coraline because I like the slightly horror fueled atmosphere. Wish they made more movies like that. Missing Link and Box Trolls felt kind of dumb. And I don't like Kubo whose moral is to forgive an abusive grandfather who kills Kubo's father and mother leaving him homeless. That movie makes me angry.

Don't forget Nintendo. Last year Nintendo acquired their homegrown animation studio and they are training their staff to eventually make inhouse Nintendo movies. Eventually Universal will lose access to Nintendo's properties.

    >Orion and the Dark is a critically acclaimed movie and experimental in a way no other studio would have the balls to do

    >Releasing The Wild Robot, an easy Best Picture nominee by September
    >follow that with Shrek 5 and Bad Guys 2 for 2025
Yes, they're in absolute misery right now. Compared to great studios like Disney and Pixar, who are totally not bombing at the box office or receiving even harsher reviews right now.
    Oh wait.

I don't know why people shit on Boss Baby so much. It's a dumb fun movie with entertaining cartoony gags. I like the variety that Dreamworks delivers. The Croods 1 + 2 being Flintstones sitcoms while Last Wish is this Western, fairy tale adventure is a lot better than, "WE ARE PIXAR, WE MUST HAVE THE SAD CRYING SCENE AT THE 3RD ACT ALWAYS". Ruby Gilman has script-flaws, but if they were aiming for a Monster High-esque feel, they nailed it. I wouldn't want that premise to be similar to HTTYD's atmosphere, that would be dumb.

The Last Wish was always Terrible. It's the kind of movie I would've loved as a little kid, but the inconsistent framerate looks choppy and cheap, the villains suck and are disjointed from each other like in Spiderman 3, only Spiderman 3 still has better villains individually, and yet people say I'm "trolling" for defending that movie, and the entire beginning of the movie feels like a disjointed waste of time that they could've and should've just glossed over to introduce the dog.

all three Last Wish antagonists are vastly more entertaining than any villain in Spider-Man 3
