Teutoburg could have been a closer battle if Varus had them marching in combat formation. The Germans took advantage of the fact that they were separated into sections by a couple of miles each.

Every war with the British goes like this
      >send in army by bumbling general
      >it gets smashed by a much weaker force
      >parliament decides to win war due to having more money
      >war is then won
      >losing side gets independence 200 years later and brags about the 1 battle they won non-stop

Damn it's almost as if committing yourself to conventional symmetric warfare and a foreign land extremely distant from any type of supply lines or reinforcements is a bad idea haha who would have thunk it

no they weren't almost all of their fighting was done outside of europe. Infantry columns run a train through irregular armies 90% of the time

Wrong. Columns were only used to assault breaches. Seldom used on open battlefield. Because a line beats a column every time.

              >Columns were only used to assault breaches. Seldom used on open battlefield
The French Revolutionary and Napoleonic infantry used column formations with great success. The key was that column formations were used to maneuver troops into place before deploying into a standard firing line formation. French troops at Austerlitz maneuvered into place in column formation before deploying to engage in line combat. Trying to move a line of infantry on anything other than flat and open terrain was just asking for the formation to become disrupted and harder to control.

Remember all the time the British annihilated the Zulus despite being 15 to 15000?
Either native indians just fought better, or it all comes down to being able to defend from a fortified position.

At that time natives had been trading with Europeans for decades. The most commonly traded goods were guns and ammunition so the natives were largely using the same weapons as the Europeans.

Indians had guns while the Zulus didn't. That makes a huge difference.

    >In one of the most notorious incidents of the French and Indian War, Montcalm's Indian allies violated the agreed terms of surrender and attacked the departing British column, which had been deprived of ammunition, as it left the fort. They killed and scalped numerous soldiers and civilians, took as captives women, children, servants, and slaves, and slaughtered sick and wounded prisoners. Early accounts of the events called it a massacre and implied that as many as 1,500 people were killed, although it is unlikely more than 200 people (less than 10% of the British fighting strength) were actually killed in the massacre.[5]

There absolutely needs to be more colonial-native war kino. Imagine a well produced video about George Washington's mission to the French and the fight at Fort Necessity and Monongahela. The smoke, the panic, the war whoops and scalpings. Washington desperately holding onto the upper Shenandoah Valley as the outlying towns got raided and butchered. Even taking an episode-long aside to show the different tribes scheming and fighting each other, treating the europeans like a minor distraction to their tribal politics. Every action scene should be like either the Fort William Henry scene ni LOTM or the raid at the beginning of The Revenant.

I wonder if the only reason they haven't done it is because they don't want to depict the Indians as such a terrifying menace, or if it's because no one gives a fuck about injuns.

        >Why would they glorify Colonial America while they're trying to destroy it?

Unironically I think that was a trick they pulled with The Terror. The book is very much a thinly veiled satire of European colonialism and shit, almost insufferably on the nose at times. The series makes nearly all the characters more complex and more sympathetic and makes the natives less stoic and untouchable; in the books they were either wise silent wizards or innocent victims of Anglo aggression. I suspect that was the only reason they were given such a massive budget and production attention, and also why Season 2 course corrected hard into kill de Boer.

Absolutely a series like the one I imagine would have a lot of pointed commentary bits about classism and slavery and dismissal of Native allies and dishonest treaties and stuff. But in the right hands that could still be a plus.

Would make a good 1v1 board game. In pahse 1 the natives build up their numbers and tribes. The imperialist player starts rushing propaganda to manufacture invasion legitimacy. Phase 2 starts once they make the first occupation. The imperialist have much better tech but are bottle necked by logistics/international law. Natives can engage in terrorism and getting media coverage through information walls to turn public opinion against the war. Imperialist win if they successfully take over. Natives win if the Imperialist is forced to withdraw.

Sounds like a fun asemtrical strategy game.

    >How realistic was this film?
    Pretty damn.
Brit-Nigs didn’t even incorporate the word “aim” into their gunnery (as in ready, AIM, fire) until after this point.
Native tactics were far more elastic and adaptable by comparison perfectly suited to the battleground. The use of tomahawks is all over historical accounts. They’d fire a volley with their rifles, and then charge in throwing tomahawks, following up finally with close-quarters-battle using spears and clubs.

Go find some historical accounts. That scene (and many others) was right on the money.

      Anonymous

Wrong. They did have specialized light infantry / riflemen who fought as skirmishes who would aim. But yeah fusiliers of line were designed to just basically be ground takers occupiers & holders, more important than their fires was their maneuver, ground taking, and ability to rebuff actual attacking elements like cavalry through well drilled formations. Other components like cavalry and artillery were the killing power. Taking garrisoned formations like this into the wilderness against French supplied Huron & Allies was basically asking them to depend on their bayonets anyways, because when you have an ambush & cover a bow might actually be preferable even though injuns had plenty of French gunpowder weapons

Also in this battle they were fresh off a losing siege where they were probably down to eating rats & leather and shitting their guts out from lack of fresh water. Probably got absolutely shredded in intensive melee

Fusiliers of the line? Fusiliers were formed to defend baggage and supply trains. Whilst eventually, like grenadier, they lost the specialism but kept the name, the phrase you are looking for is “line infantry”.

Don’t be a Wikipedia Andy there’s all sorts of ways that words been used in military history & yes basically your term is the best modern generic one but not one used contemporaneously. Also your niche example for fusilier sounds like some one off meme for one specific military in how they used the designation fusilier but for most it was basically infantryman. Also grenadier didn’t lose its designation at all it was always the gigachad formation of tallest dudes with biggest hats and greatest predilection to push with steel, instilling fear in manlets like yourself insecure trying to debate club anons on sperg shit. And don’t you ever try to outsperg me in this niche phaggot. You’ll go the way of the commonwealth in the partition of Poland (one of humanity’s finest moments, the extinction of the polak state)
