No, he tried to come back during muh orange man period. His new show tanked hard. Even Letterwang was on it. Just old rich free masons getting pissy about another old rich free mason breaking ranks.

The reason DL is out is because he couldn't square away all the deals required to stop him getting MeTooed in 5 seconds flat if he did. He's been fricking dumb Hollywood bimbos since the 70s. Too many old prostitutes with gross plastic faces whose only hope of ever getting even a minor sniff the spotlight again is via a MeToo tale on an "old white male" like that.

The smartest thing either guy did was gtfo two seconds before the culture war shit started. This way most of their skeletons remain under lock and key.

Not getting the Carson spot broke him mentally and he still hasn't recovered.

Conan goes below Leno for being a sperg about wanting Leno's job then bombing at it and now for begging for scraps on podcasts while Leno just fricks around lighting himself on fire in his garage like a chad.

        Don't forget Dennis Miller

I thought Kilborn would do better after doing really good at The Daily Show but he just flopped. I watched him a few times and struggled to maintain attention, although I did like his continuance of 5 questions

i didnt mind his Late Late Show but it lacked the edge he had on The Daily Show, weirdly he quit both shows on his own terms and just decided to go away, i dont think he was considered a flop though he had a following at the time but its been so long now people just kinda forgot he existed

i wish his old daily show interviews were easier to come by i remember them being a lot of fun, jon stewart basically turned the daily show into CNN interviewing nothing but political shits after a while

Yeah and famously he's always been really uncomfortable around fame and celebrity. Which you might think makes his whole career ironic but, especially if you watch the earlier episodes, that's actually why he had an edge. The whole joke of the Letterman show is that the guest is kind-of the joke. Of course now that formula's been copied to death so now it's just standard practice and might not seem like anything now.

Still good for him. He wants the quiet life away from fame and celebrities. Good. Well deserved

Anon, for years, me too. Then one day it clicked. Eventually it came to me that:

Some of his interviews suck and he can really be a dick, but after viewing all the other recent late night hosts and then rewatching clips of letterman interviews, I conclude he really had a good thing going. He cultivated good guests, good moments, and provoked thought because he was very opinionated. He was being himself; not pretending to be funny or regurgitating the agenda / messages / politics of the broadcasting company. He could be an butthole, but he was sincere. This made the interviews feel genuine and real. In the future if you care enough, try watching some of his show again. He's not the greatest late night host of all time but I'm beginning to think he's one of them.

He's doing more shit now than ever, all those 'humanitarian' interviews like in Ukraine and that paki girl, did that thing in Dublin with U2. As for his look and attitude, look into his later interviews with Richard Harris, guy is larping as him (at the time even said he was his hero for some reason, and Harris looked exactly like Letterman's new look at the end. Pic related is from Conan but Letterman did an interview with him the same week.)

Letterman was great. Hard working, demanding, and a comedic visionary. He was an butthole, of course, because no working class protestant is going to have his career without being a monomaniac taskmaster. The rot set in toward the end. He'd lost his artistic impetus and the culture took a nosedive after 9/11 anyway. We'll probably never see a host like him again - a bridge to the past. Even if we did, he wouldn't be given enough leeway, because there's no room for iconoclasts on TV now. Just humourless sycophants like Corden, Fallon, Kimmel. It sucks because that 90s "frick you" spirit was the last hope for American cultural revival. More people than ever talk about being "revolutionaries" but, ironically, the American public has never been tamer, except for the growing number of feral animals who are too stupid and self-serving to pose any kind of threat to the status quo. Of course, that's the thing I've already mentioned about Letterman: he was an intelligent protestant. That's the only group in human civiilisation that's really proven itself capable of mounting and sustaining an intellectually coherent challenge to monolithic power structures, and it's the demographic most rapidly disappearing from American life. The vanishing of American presbyterianism, as embodied in Letterman, is the death of America.
