Actually, he's not. He's very clever in some scenes, usually calm ones involving sitting around a table, but he routinely makes bad decisions. He's good at beating up townies- he just barely survives against pros. (And what are you complaining about? An action hero survives? What are you, some kind of marxist subversive trannie who needs to be chopped into pieces and fed to dogs?). In season 1 a character he looked down on the entire time as a scrawny weasel ends up knocking him unconscious with a crowbar into a swimming pool and almost succeeding in killing him. He routinely makes bad decisions and predictions. His overconfidence in his fighting ability ends up stymieing his own investigative efforts. Suspects with information he needs escape and get silenced. Innocents get closed to him and get killed, because he didn't consider anything but his need for vengeance. He's genuinely an autist about normies' feelings, which is funny sometimes, but an ineffective interrogation tactic at others. His big dumb golden retriever charisma often makes up for it, which makes it believable that his team does truly cares for him, but he lets them and himself down emotionally, missing his own friends' weddings, kids' births, funerals, etc- and they hold him to task for this, even crack jokes at his expense. He is far from a perfect character, but he IS action hero man, which is what makes him great. "Gary Stu"? Unironically go frick yourself with your HRT needle.

Mary Sue was a FANFIC CHARACTER inserted into Star Trek. in the authors own words the MC in these type of books have some cliqued flaw. drugs drink women etc he said he wanted to make a guy who was just a beast who could kick anyone's ass. The brutal honesty of that is what makes him a great character.

the shows explanation of a lot of what's in the book seems ham fisted. in the book it could take 4 pages to explain why Reacher came to the correct conclusion in the show he just says it out loud instantly so that's a little jarring.
examples from the first episode alone where the amount of money deposited into his bank has him subtracting what his own balance was to get to the 1080 him realizing this is a radio callsign then him ringing various agency's to get hold of Neagly number
