>Black Panther was a resounding financial success from cashing in on American blacks
>Shang Chi tried to repeat this with Asian-Americans and barely broke even
>Blue Beetle tried to do this with Latinos and is en route to tanking
What did Black Panther do that the others didn't?

It was first and Wakanda unironically plays into the "WE WUZ KANGS" mindset, also T'Challa has basically always been a gigachad whose flaws are more related to the stresses of ruling which basically equates to a 2 hour black power fantasy
It was about black supremacy.
Debut in an Avengers movie.
The black demographic actually find the black Israelite shit affirming.
Most Asian Americans just seem to get upset at the kung fu wizard shit (though I think actual china folk like it) and I don't even know what Blue Beetle is trying to do.
Blue Beetle just had shit marketing. Between the no budget and the trailers having mostly bad scenes there was no hope despite the final film being pretty okay. Trailers would have been better to focus less on George Lopez and more on Jaime's dad. Also Mexico Mexicans hate Americanized Mexican stuff and a lot of people seemed to think the film took place in Puerto Rico.
China did NOT like it. They shat on him for looking like a fricking dentist and not an action star. The Douban commentary was full tilt savage. Also, asians aren't all one group, and they have anime and hong kong cinema.
Latinos aren't all one group, and in any case, writing by out of touch hollywood chicanos isn't a great way to reach them anyways.
BP did well in non black markets as well, even though they're at a charisma disadvantage. The idea of a techno suit dude in a futuristic afrofuturesitic city having a great fricking adventure was what they sold.
I thought China didn't get it at all.
>Movie released at the peak of the Infinity Saga hype cycle.
>Character has name recognition, starring or featuring in multiple video games, movies, cartoons, etc.
I mean it's clear you see it as a race thing, but that seems awful reductive.
That stuff brought whitey to theaters but BP was a massive hit because black markets showed up. In general black people have a solidarity other races lack. Probably because asian and Hispanic are umbrella terms. It really isn't a bad thing either.
Why on earth would anyone want to watch a Marvel kung-fu movie after Iron Fist?
Shang-Chi had some really good fight scenes in the first half. Turned into a cgi shitfest in the end.
But to know that, you'd have to be willing to watch it.
Okay valid.
Which one would you want to see?
So, as a dissapointment to pol and leftypol, actually having a compelling, coherent concept, that looks like a quality product, that isn't fricking stupid or insulting is the biggest difference maker and not some weird race issue?
Black Panther has been around since 1964 and has been in hundreds of Marvel Comics. He's a prominent, classic Avenger so not only do old school comic fans and modern comic fans both love him, he was in the back of peoples' heads culturally even if they didn't know it.
Shang-Chi has been decried as racially insensitive since he debuted and has never been as popular as Black Panther.
Blue Beetle was created in 2006 and only modern DC fans know him. He's an "ohhh yeah! him!" for casuals like Moon Knight.
Black Panther was also just a better movie. People liked how we saw a lot of Wakanda, scenes like the museum and the waterfall, the music, etc. It's also closer to the comics than the other two.
In Shang Chi's case, being closer to the comics isn't as important, because marvel's been afraid to use him because of rights issues and fears of racisim.
Yes, which is part of why he's never been as popular as Black Panther. Everyone loves Black Panther- i feel like most of the threads like these come about because Zoomers like OP have no actual understanding of history or comic book culture
someone's going to angrily reply to this because they feel targeted too lmao
Original Blue Beetle is from the 30s, but this version is from 2006. It's where I think they dropped the ball a little. He's a neat character, but so much better when teamed up with Booster Gold. A Beetle/Booster movie which was made as just a fun adventure probably would have done better than this which feels like it's marketed for Latinos specifically which probably reduced it's appeal.
But I think the biggest factor is just cape movie burn out. 4 or 5 years ago I would have been super hyped about a Blue Beetle movie as I quite like the character and would have been in the theatre. At this point, if I don't know if ill even bother streaming it when it's free. I'm just sick of cape movies and DC hasn't made a single really good one.
It looks like a Disney Channel Original Movie. No one will see this unless they're taking their 7-17 year old kid.
beetle/booster would've been the magic sauce of a latino/white team up, instant box office success
Since blacks are 13% of the the USA population and a significant proportion are incarcerated or in pre trial, Black Panther made its money from white guilt as per usual.
Wow, you’re really ignorant.
Tony Leung was the only good thing about Shang Chi
black panther was before endgame when a big fraction of people stopped caring about comic shit
>Asian Americans are a much smaller group than Black Americans
>China doesn't like the lead actor because they think he's ugly
As for Latinos, Blue Beetle is DC so it was doomed to fail anyway
