Even in movies where it isn't clear cut there is a clear meta of spunky female heroes besting malevolent men rather than the classic monster vs. anyone which plays into general feminist paranoia about masculinity
For instance in It Follows, yes there's a supernatural villain but the reason the woman is in her position is because of the manipulative man who gave it to her, but she is too righteous to do the same thing herself
There are a lot of subplots like this now where they are clearly taking a jab at maledom even with an overarching narrative of supernaturality
I still like a lot of these movies even if the tone has shifted to appeal more to women and it's basically just misandrist. Men are no longer allowed to be heroic or save anyone, but the movies will happily and indulgently portray them as cowardly, manipulative, even if they aren't the villain itself.

Pathetic and secretly weak so the audience could cheer when they get beaten without any doubt, it's just dull.

This is kinda an interesting crossroads of horror for me. They're all "we need to de stigmatize mental illness" but that's kinda hard when the basis for your villain is this sense of neurotic behavior or hyper-fixation that permeates most slasher villains or otherwise non-supernatural ones.
