Even without that, I just generally hate this kind of thing
      >man is cartoonishly evil and abusive
      >the poor innocent victim beats him in the end and everybody cheers because girl power
Feels like something that should stay on Lifetime and the same stupid self-insert revenge crap as capeshit.

that's all media for women lol, 50 shades, twilight, all the romance slop they read, the core fantasy is always "i'm just a mousy average girl... but this top tier man is crazy about me! and now two of them, fighting!" they just dress it up differently each time.

It's seriously endemic in horror. Now every "monster" has to just be some kind of rapey/evil/misogynistic dude rather than a supernatural creature.

            Fresh
            Barbarian
            Five Nights
            Invisible Man
            I See You
            Black Phone
            The Menu
arguably Midsommar since the Femosphere thinks the apathetic boyfriend is somehow a bigger villain than the murderous cult

Even in movies where it isn't clear cut there is a clear meta of spunky female heroes besting malevolent men rather than the classic monster vs. anyone which plays into general feminist paranoia about masculinity

For instance in It Follows, yes there's a supernatural villain but the reason the woman is in her position is because of the manipulative man who gave it to her, but she is too righteous to do the same thing herself

There are a lot of subplots like this now where they are clearly taking a jab at maledom even with an overarching narrative of supernaturality

I still like a lot of these movies even if the tone has shifted to appeal more to women and it's basically just misandrist. Men are no longer allowed to be heroic or save anyone, but the movies will happily and indulgently portray them as cowardly, manipulative, even if they aren't the villain itself.

              >portray them as cowardly
I think it's a major problem for me. I wouldn't mind a great male villain, but the problem is they're always portrayed as so pathetic in these kinds of stories that I find it very hard to find them intimidating. Pathetic and secretly weak so the audience could cheer when they get beaten without any doubt, it's just dull.

Le bad guy is very dangerous and highly capable BUT he's laughably pathetic and also bumbling fool who can't tie his own shoes. It's 3rd grader logic, but in 2024 adult Americans walk around thinking this way not only of fictional characters, but real life.

I haven't seen it, but from what I read wasn't the point that he was both rich and spoiled being extremely used to getting what he wants and not knowing how to handle that?
This is kinda an interesting crossroads of horror for me. They're all "we need to de stigmatize mental illness" but that's kinda hard when the basis for your villain is this sense of neurotic behavior or hyper-fixation that permeates most slasher villains or otherwise non-supernatural ones.
