        CGI was commonplace by the mid 80s. Some of Disney's projects like the Black Cauldron and Oliver and Company had CGI in them.

    It wasn't CGI at all, Michael and the other dancers had special shoes where the tips would lock into braces attached to the floor. If there were wires helping them fall forward and come back up, no big deal -- it's still a practical special effect. Michael did it several times at other appearances where he did Smooth Criminal. The clips in the floor are prepared beforehand. It's very effective.
