If any series needs a total reboot it's DB the power levels are in the trillions now there's only so many hair colors they can do reset it all back to goku and his grandpa.

I forgot that there were universes that didn't have to compete in the tournament because the people in them were so OP, they weren't considered for erasure. The spot for third is either Goku, Vegeta, or Piccolo. Vegeta won another fight against Goku (3-0 now) but just barely, and Piccolo got a major power boost because he got Shenron to unlock his potential like Guru used to do on Namek. Shenron also gave Piccolo a transformation to "Orange Piccolo" (combined with "Black Freiza" it really seems like they don't care about creativity)

Not exactly. It's not really Cell and there's no tournament. Dr Gero's grandson gets manipulated by the current CEO of the Red Ribbon army to create more androids. He creates 2 superhero-style androids and that giant red Cell robot. Gero's grandson is not really evil though, and he helps Gohan and the others to stop the Cell monster. Meanwhile, Goku, Vegeta and Broly are all off-world doing some training, and Vegeta beats Goku for the first time ever
They definitely piggybacked off of the popularity of SSJ2 kid Gohan VS Cell. They even shamelessly copied some panel scenes from that encounter. Going that hard on nostalgia shows some real creative bankruptcy. I know Toriyama doesn't like Gohan, but that's really too much to put zero effort in like that

When you're Gohan, you don't have to try. Power is just given to you, just for being Gohan. In reality, Toriyama doesn't care about him and only ever works with his character if some Toei managers who are Gohan fans are annoying him about including him

This should've been the obvious route choice for Gohan's role. He already had connections with the Elder Kai, this movie should've been him inheriting Kaioshin powers but with the soul of a warrior.
Gohan's power, if they go with the theming they have set up, should end up beyond something demonic in origin. That is, something from the demon realm, like Dabura, Janemba, Piccolo Daimao's goons. Beast or θηρίον has long historical associations with Satan, devils, and demons.
Toriyama said he gave Gohan pale skin and a scary face, then added the thorny white hair when he thought the former two weren't really enough to sell the new form. Being a student of Piccolo Jr's demon school and using the demonic Makankosappo attack, added to Gohan heading in that direction
Historically, Gohan's source of his power was just this unhinged rage. Beast or Therion does not necessarily mean a big or scary beast, just a wild animal.

That wasn't the case before Super. SSJ were all golden, Frieza had the same color scheme in all forms, same for Cell and Buu. DB Super is hot uninspired fricking garbage and everything it brought forward is not even worth mentioning.
What you are witnessing is the effect of writers not being able to create compelling storylines.
Instead of making a more interesting villain, such as by creating a unique backstory and motivation, they just make the villain more threatening by increasing his power level. The only way to beat him at that point is to make the hero even more powerful.
They rinse and repeat this same formula for hundreds of episodes until they have reached power creep that isn't interesting anymore because all of the "infinity power levels" just blend together.
This power creep is the same type of thing that tends to happen in MMORPGs as they develop over time. Instead of making better boss mechanics, the devs just make higher HP numbers and make you farm the same fights 1000 times to get higher gear stats.
Power creep is always a sign of untalented or lazy content creators.
Frieza was so iconic that no villain that came after him has come near his popularity. So they just kept bringing him back to generate hype. Like how Star Wars and Star Trek keep bringing back their original heroes for new storylines. TFA would have not been nearly as successful if it didn’t include Luke, Han, and Leia.

I think eventually the character being used for comedy will happen to everyone on Dragon Ball, in the fullness of time. Piccolo Jr, Bejita, Frieza, Majin Buu, Beerus, Hit, etc. They come out of the box very intimidating, even in Majin Buu's case when he starts eye gouging and beating people to death, then are used for comedy. There's no escape from it. It is Dragon Ball after all, not Hokuto no Ken, so to some degree it is to be expected. Sometimes though, it gets to be too much. Let at least some of the villains retain their dignity so they can still give off some level of being imposing. If everyone is a clown, it gets old

Arale's design is so ugly. I remember when I first saw that episode was coming, I didn't even know who she was and didn't care. Toriyama is known mainly for Dragon Ball and lending his art style to things like Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger. It stops there, nothing else he made is remembered fondly, or remembered at all. Super tries to put some things in there he did, like Dr.Slump characters and Jaco, probably to please him since he was involved somewhat with production

Ssj4 was kino. My only minor issue is that it's not really a super saiyan transformation, it should've just been its own thing. I always thought that ssj1-3 weren't actually distinct transformations, it was just the same transformation stacked on top of itself and Ssj4 doesn't seem to fit.

I dont get how people still care about this series after this movie. Battle of Gods has a lot of charm, slots into the original series nicely, and Super Saiyan God felt new and interesting. Then this movie comes out, shitty new forms, shitty plot retreads, takes away all the mystique of ssg by just making it super saiyan but blue. And then the rest of super followed that same trajectory. Broly was ok but even then the Bardock shit rubs me the wrong way, goku being good because of nurture over nature is part of what made him great.
