i notice when you watch sketches from the older years (90s, 80s, maybe even 70s) they never looked like they were blatantly reading cue cards, i mean i think they always did read of cue cards but how did they make it look less obvious in the old days? the people actually looked at each other in the eye when they acted in sketches, nowadays everyone is facing the camera when theyre supposed to be talking to each other it drives me nuts
right along with you. they barely ever make eye contact with who theyre talking to now because theyre reading cards. takes me right out of it. makes for a shit show
They memorize their lines like any good actor or performer does and only glance at the cue cards if they needed them.

I've seen some people defend this with "Oh they change the sketches sometimes up to the last minute." doesn't change the fact that with a week of writing and rehearsals they don't remember the entire beats. I can understand guests doing it, this isn't their job they do week after week for a large chunk of the year.
For the main cast it's not an excuse.
