Gramps once said he probably spent most of the 50s and 60s with a strong buzz, eventually regulations kicked in and the foreman started taking it serious, so they drank less at work, then the DUI laws got tightend up and they drank less throughout the day, eventually he retired, and now he's back to having a good buzz every day. My brother is a horrible representative for AA. I did have a really bad problem once and now every time I see him he only talks about alcohol. It's very grating. He thinks our parents are horrible alcoholics because they get drunk on Friday nights.

What a life
Was very common and widespread in all industries yes. People operated heavy equipment and did all sorts of dangerous shit with a buzz on.
I worked in a big warehouse once and people were clearly on drugs, I assume crank, operating heavy machinery. The production quotas were so high that you had to slam the machines down the aisle at full throttle, perfectly slide into pallets and so on to not be fired. I clung onto the job as long as possible while being trained and then jumped ship when I knew I couldn't meet their insane quota.
The most senior machine operators were a mix of older guys who moved the machines like an extension of their body and slammed down painkillers at every break and addicts. If something was fricked up or spilled it would be left where it fell and they'd just leave it, the mess would be ignored by everybody on the floor until somebody was directly blocked by it being in their way, in which case they'd go to the supervisor and have their time written off.
People will literally drive 20mph on a jailbroken forklift that drives beyond its intended speed without honking and while high. That's a real thing. Management doesn't care until limbs are being sliced off, you can slam machines into each other or abide warped support columns and it's not a problem until somebody is permanently maimed or dies and the company is liable. One guy I knew drove up to a friend to high five and chat and his hand got crushed between their machines because the other guy floored it too hard. When they asked him to drug test he went to his car and never came back.
Another chewed on a water bottle cap, swallowed it and aspirated it into his lungs. He went down choking and last I heard he was unconscious in the hospital with surgery planned. We had a meeting about that and they told us not to chew botttlecaps and that was when I knew I was done there. I've worked in a lot of warehouses but there's people being stupid, tossing loose product onto vents to hide it and there's being in a fricking circus that will kill you to save two thousand dollars.

I worked at a oil/gas refinery and they would do random drug tests. When I was there my manager told me the last results came back 70% positive for drugs or alcohol, and about 30% of that was hard drugs. This wasn't unusual and these were secret in-house tests so never released to the public. This refinery was near an heavily urban area and any major accident would have killed thousands.
Grim. I've worked in a warehouse before and the only problem I had was having too much free time on my hands. It was during the height of covid so there wasn't much work to be done.

Not bad. Caught up on some much needed sleep on my day off yesterday. Had a few hours of sober sleep during the day, with some absolute kino dreams, but I can't remember any of them. I'd keep a dream journal, but i'm a degenerate alcoholic and that's too much effort.

Worked a few times with a dude who would sit in his truck on his lunch break and smoke from a glass pipe (meth or crack i didn't ask).
He was always highly productive after lunch, but called in sick to work maybe 40% of the time.

When I contracted with Microsoft a few years back to do a little Cordova app, I visited one of their offices in Bellevue a few times. I think it was the one across from Bellevue Square. They had a pretty big liquor cabinet there, open to anyone to take a glass back to their desk any time they wanted. Pretty good whiskey selection too. People weren't drunk on the job, but they did drink a bit. After my meetings I'd have a jack and coke and then take the bus back to Seattle. Those were good times, before COVID.

I work at a law firm as an admin/paralegal theres no drug test when you're hired and a bunch of them do coke or adderall. Everyone gets smashed at business meetings ( I often get tapped to join because I chit chat well) and happy hour on friday is really common with younger people. I drink from time to time on boring days you just have to have mints for the smell. Its pretty cool.

Almost every job has a drug test and a criminal background check whether you are dealing with equipment or its a desk job. Its just an easy way of screening people.

I think what saves me from being an alchohlic is I only get the urge to do it once a month. I fill up a coffee mug with halfway with whiskey and drink it with a chaser or recently on ice. The day after though I never want to do it again, the same night even. It is fun in moderation though.
