Did the UFC kill martial arts movies?

The mystique of exotic martial arts is gone. Lots of guys can heem Bruce Lee.

I think jackie chan and everyone else getting old killed martial arts movies

the ufc is pretty underwhelming as far as fun fights go.

Agree with this. Also, it may not be what it once was as a genre, but movies like The Bourne Identity do a good job of showcasing martial arts.

It’s not even comparable. kung fu movies like Bruce Lee were basically boomer anime

UFC has too many rules to handicap bruce lee. He would murder too many people if he were allowed to freely fight

Its a shame we could never get to see Mike Tyson lunging around endlessly swinging his arms at fresh air while Bruce picks him apart at will and dances around the ring.

This is moronic because during ufc press conferences there are always dumbasses trying to 1v1 challenge the fighter then and there and it’s cringe as frick. People who get heemed are the most delusional

MMA is awesome because its stupid and backyard Olympics tier shit.

Frick no. The UFC had nothing to do with it. Martial arts movies are dying because the existence of the genre at all was a side effect of the confluence of events that lead to the 20th century Hong Kong movie industry. They took the long rooted historical artforms of live opera and acrobatics and modernized and combined it for use on film. Since these artforms preexisted and had centuries of best practices established as well as stables full of young men and women trained in it the studios could pick and choose the most competent, most flashy, and most charismatic to play roles in their productions. But as modernization has continued the harsh training conditions required for people like Sammo Hung and Jackie Chan and others of their generation to reach their level have become unacceptable. Plus Jackie Chan was an outlier of an outlier to begin with given his proficiency combined with autistic unyielding obsession with getting the perfect take and willingness to put it all on the line for the shot. Tom Cruise is probably the closest thing we ever got to that from American stock and people like them only come around every once in a long while. When you try to do the martial arts movie thing but with an American style production with American actors and stunt performers you end up with capeshit and we all know how that turns out 95% of the time

Big thing to remember is that in those classic hong kong movies the actors were allowed to genuinely hit each others. Of course they didn't hit full force and they knew to roll with the punches, but still. In modern day hollywood action slop the big name actors have strict limitations about taking a fist to the face, so most of the fisticuffs have to be done with this aggressive fast camerawork to hide the fact that nobody gets actually punched. I remember watching the dark knight rises and this problem was especially egregious. Punches are being thrown and dudes go down from the shockwave. Also that scene from the new star wars where they fight the room full of those red guardian dudes.

Why hasn’t this come up in the Mainstream yet?

You’re actually wrong because you ignored how nepo babies in the industry get to do the stunts for the hero’s and the disposable stuntmen have to do the stunts for the grunts and bad guys.

Since the disposable stuntmen all have backgrounds in martial arts tricking (basically practicing impractical anime attacks that look really cool) and the nepo babies don’t, you get a lot of jealously and rage taken out on the disposables.

A friend is currently in legal battles with marvel over getting kneed in the head so hard he needed to goto a hospital. Now of course this is what you sign up for so his legal battle I likely to fail and he’s kind of being a lil b***h about it but still the industry absolutely has moments where it doesn’t pull punches.

      good post
I would add that another thing imo is that thanks to cgi and anime xianxia fantasy shit has cannibalized the vast majority of the old school martial arts film audience. I don't think most of the audience actually care about questions of realism

    No.
    1) Sammo/Jackie/Yuen got too old
    2) Hong Kong's industry died
    3) The opera schools that trained/tortured people in china in order to be able to do mad acrobatic stunts are now illegal and no longer operating, so there's nobody to replace jackie/sammo/yuen etc

No, action movies in general just died. It had a golden age in the 80s and 90s with stallon, schqrzeBlack person, jackie chan, jet li, even a little bit in the 2000s. but millinieals would rather watch cape shit come the 2010s.

Also they are remaking road house and jake gylannhall is an mma fighter in it so might be cool
