Eh I don't think so. Kinda like a friend group and their two girls, and you want to date one but she seems to hot for you and the other guy in charge kinda has a thing for her so you just move to the mood goth chick.

Now those two did NOT have chemistry. They felt forced like characters in a pair the spares trope.

They were forced together because that’s how it was in the comics. Thing is, they changed Starfire completely so now it doesn’t work.

how different was she and their relationship in the comics?

            Anonymous

Comic starfire is plain more mature than cartoon starfire, so when she is in love with someone she will express it intimately, and when she hates someone she will brutally beat them to death. So it's not as different as you would think, just safer and more child appropriate.

Those portraying her as a bawd that satisfies her lust without feeling love are much further than what her character is supposed to be than the cartoon.

Nah, Robin was kinda brooding in NTT as well, although not as much as in the cartoon. It's just that DC over the years flanderized Dick to make him more distinct from the other Robins.

Yes, but it's like really tangential.

You think Beast Boy, you immediately think, vegan, protect the earth and animals. Raven is a dark magic user.

Earth and Darkness go together like Fire and Light.

fun fact, raven was the one that was vegan in the comics while beast boy definitely wasn't. They changed it because of BB's voice actor.

NTT BBRae is an interesting inversion of typical BBRae where Gar is sarcastic and moody while Raven is gentle and straightforward. I'd imagine if a relationship between them did existed at that time it would something like a non-toxic with her relationship with Eric Forrester where Gar actually cares about Raven as a person but is still an immature horny dickhead.

          Anonymous

Well, the thing about NTT is that Raven unironically looks like she is 40 most of the time (I know this literally becomes a plot point, but still) while Gar is clearly just 15 or so. Beast Boy and Raven are also probably the two main characters who interact the least in that series other than Wally and literally anybody. It would have been pretty awkward back then.

            Anonymous

They're not casual acquaintances so why would it be awkward? You're so weird to assule that Gar isn't part of her inner circle.

Yet a 10 year difference didn't stop wolfman from self inserting in wondergirl as terry long, so you can't use that as an excuse as to why 15/16 year old gar can't relate with the 18/19 year olds on the team.

The most interesting part of the ntt's gar x raven interaction is that she is probably the one woman he treats respectfully all of the time. He leers at starfire but backs off if she isn't in the mood to play along, he teases wondergirl constantly because he barely stands how uptight she is, he has intense love/hate back and forth with terra and flirts with every new hot girl he meets, so even then raven ends up being the exception despite wolfman never entertaining the possibility.

            Anonymous

Probably too interesting considering Raven would be the one with the most understanding about how Gar was hurting.

          Anonymous

Yeah, the idea of Raven being a jerk to Beast Boy never made much sense to me outside of the cartoon versions. Raven is a super-introvert that's also sensing people's feelings all the time. She would realize Beast Boy's act is a facade.

        >Also on reflection Raven got a lot of Daria b***h vibe

In the 2003 show for better or for worse they heavily downplayed Raven's empathic powers (always sensing the emotions of others with no filters). I get why, but it could have contextualized her character.

In the comics they tend to ship Beast Boy and Raven because bateditors block Nightwing/Starfire from happening.

The logic is that Nightwing is a street-level character so he is only allowed to date other street-level characters.

Basically Beast Boy fights some villain of the week and they're both doused in chemicals. Beast Boy becomes increasingly violent and there's a fake out where he seemingly attacks Raven. However, it turns out he dindu nuffin and the villain of the week inexplicably got Beast Boy's powers despite not having any similar abilities at all when they first fought. This is never mentioned again when he appears in later episodes.

Raven mentions at the end of the episode that Cyborg made an antidote for Beast Boy for the chemicals he was bathed in. It stands to reason they used it on the villain, too.

A theory I read was the chemicals somehow caused them to swap aspects of themselves. Beast Boy got roid rage from Adonis while Adonis got BB's shapeshifting. So BB's beast form was always an ability he had and the antidote just got rid of Adonis' influence on his personality.

I think that specific description is describing the interactions of an old married couple rather than being an actual couple. It really just means they're comfortable with each other and maybe bicker a bit. They skipped straight to the "domestic roommate" stage of a relationship, which, without going through the romantic stage, isn't really a relationship at all.

No, as I said anything you might read into in the show is confirmed not indicative of anything, by one of the lead writers, at a panel where he was surrounded by other lead writers who could've corrected him if he said something that wasn't the consensus.

A bunch of writers are not going to start an autistic shipping debate in the middle of a panel. One writer's opinion on the matter does not make what he says canon, especially after the fact. In fact, all the writers' opinions do not matter because only what is in the show itself is canon.

I never said there was any romantic chemistry between them. I am trying to educate you on what constitutes "canon" because like 95% of gays on this site, you are misusing the term. An author cannot publish his or her work and then retroactively add things to it outside of officially published sequel material. At best it would be apocrypha.

And I'm trying to educate you on what constitutes "headcanon" because if fans try to e.g. interpret two female characters behavior to each other as lesbian attraction but the author clarifies no lesbianism was intended, we can 100% know for a fact the canon reading is heterosexual even if the story itself doesn't bring it up

                Wrong
If I make a character who has at maximum moved 10 MPH and has been shot multiple times with no way to react to the bullets, even if I say hes faster than Barry Allen, I am still wrong. Just because an author says something, doesnt mean its right. Hence why Word of God is fricking stupid. Shouldve shown it in the show itself instead of just commenting on it later, since the show itself shows they have great chemistry.

A sexless, romanceless couple, that gets on each other's nerves, it's the result of a relationship but having that sort of interaction from the get-go doesn't result in a relationship. It's like saying a young guy has the physical build and dexterity of a geriatric war veteran, it wouldn't be implying the young guy is fit for war.

Didn't he threaten to kill her in that episode where he turned into a werewolf?

Anyway, it seemed more like he was the kind of guy that she could occasionally drop her guard around, but not really someone mature enough for her to actually date.

No? They almost fight at one point, but he actually defended her from the other werewolf.

IIRC, he basically said something like "Stop putting me down or else." and then turned into something to threaten her.

He calmed down later in the episode when he turned into the beast, though.

        >interacted the least out of any pairing
That's cyborg and Robin. They had one episode. Same with Robin and Raven. They had an episode but they don't hang out.

Usually raven is minding her own buisness and bb along with cyborg are doing hijinks. BB then does some dumb shit to annoy raven. Not once have we seen them chatting or doing things unless some shit happened. Like Beast Boy acting like he has a monster inside him

I remember Beast Boy and Raven had a ton of episodes. People just remember the warewolf one. I remember one where they enter Raven's mind. There was that one with the talking book. I remember when Raven and Terra were fighting in the mud, Terra was rubbing in Raven's face how Beast Boy likes her more or something. I could be wrong. Haven't seen this series in years. But I think people shipped them because they were ship teased a lot.

Cyborg and Robin had drama throughout S3 with Cy wanting to strike out on his own and Robin not wanting him to leave the team which caused tension between the two. It wasn't the main focus of the plot, but it was there.
Robin and Raven interacted a lot in S4 because of their connection with Slade, and Robin being the one to rescue her from Hell.

Whereas Starfire and Beastboy had exactly 1 episode where they said more than two words to each other, and that episode's focus was split between them and the cloud boys.

I remember shipping BB and Star as a kid because they gave me Numbuh 3/4 vibes. (Even sharing the same green & orange coding but in reverse)

I was surprised to find out that was actually Robin she was canonically with, I never saw it to be truthful, there wasn’t much chemistry, it’d be like shipping Numbuh 1 with 3. (The serious leader with the ditzy girl)

That hug is the most affection she gave him. Raven showed more interest in Cyborg during that car episode. And when Trigon took over, it was Robin that saved her and she gave him a hug. All BB did was flirt and fail. I am surprised how one sided it was. You'd think Raven would show hints of interest but it was just annoyance.

      >All BB did was flirt and fail.
I don't remember Beast Boy doing even that. He treated her just like he treated everyone else, but she was just generally annoyed by his antics. She stopped being so uptight after he and Cyborg invaded her mind and they actually felt like friends after, but I didn't read any more into it than that.

both are affected by a traumatic upbringing. BB takes on the mantle of class clown as otherwise he'd become the brooding whimpering mess people think raven is. on the contrary - raven wants to break outside her shell, yet cannot. each wishes they were like the other, they compliment and allow both coping mechanisms to be inserted into the other's life in a healthy organic way on the way to recovery and acceptance

Is this post a joke or did you miss the point that hard? That episode’s entire message is that while he acted like Raven’s charming prince by understanding her hobbies, he was just using her and didn’t care about Raven at all; meanwhile Beast Boy who was portrayed as the doofus that didn’t understand Raven’s tastes, was in the end used to show that he is her friend and likes her as a person despite not quite getting her magic shenanigans.

TL;DR: people who appreciate you shows love even if they don’t understand all of your hobbies and tastes.

Yes. There are many kinds of character chemistry. They were designed to force each other out of their comfort zone. Likely used as devices for each other to show they have more than one layer. Oh come on anon, "opposites attract" is an old as shit romantic concept in fiction. You've been on Cinemaphile too long to pretend you don't get it. If I was going to self-insert into anyone, it would be Cyborg. He should have been the one to change Jinx, not fricking Kid Flash.

I enjoy seeing such unalike people interact with each other, I enjoy seeing how they rub each other the wrong way, I enjoy seeing them find the rare things they have in common, I enjoy the little compromises they make for each other, I enjoy seeing the rollercoaster of their relationship through the high and lows of it, and I enjoy all the effort it takes to get to the finish line. Simple as that.

Its not just opposites attract. Beast Boy and Raven could get stuck in an elevator together and you could still have an episode. The writers knew the two could easily spark conflict between them so its never a dull moment. At least, I'm just talking about the TT animated series. I'm sure they weren't being shipped because that role was for Rbin and Starfire. But when Beast Boy and Raven interact, their organic chemistry just takes over.

There were a lot of alternatives never explored. Robin takes himself too seriously while Beast Boy never takes anything seriously. Beast Boy just goofs around with Cyborg all the time. Why didn't they hit it off? Raven and Starfire had a body swap episode. I thought they made a great team but they never did anything more after that.

Fairly honest YJ was gonna pair Beast Boy with Raven if they had gotten another season. It's similar to all the ships Weisman does.

Anon, S1 Superboy/Miss Martian is the exact same ship but with the genders reversed.

YJ BB was just kind of there for me so I don't know if I would have cared if they did.

Well that would've been the problem, Raven being explored in her YJ incarnation and just being delegated to being "just kind of there" BB's frickhole

Why does this ship infuriate so many people? Not a lot of Cinemaphile ships that make people this angry.

People want to self insert as Raven's boyfriend and gets angry at Beast Boy being her lover.

Top tier waifu being derailed to be paired off with the self insert of failed class clowns. There's really no one you could pair her off to to make people satisfied, i.e. everyone was mad about her x Damien too, she's a waifu behemoth like that.

I think if she was paired with Starfire back in the early 2000s we'd think it was sexy and no one's self-insertion would be threatened.

Dumb yurigay. If she's into girls, how is any guy going to be able to self-insert?

There's no guy involved to be jealous of if he's not exactly like you, so you just get to enjoy hot girls making out and imagine yourself getting both of them.

As the guy they go straight for. How new are you?

They'd never have a guy turn lesbians straight in the show. You'd have to rely on fanfics for that.

              >As the guy they go bi for.
FTFY. They're horny for each other and for (You). They aren't competition like Robin or Beast Boy or Kid Flash. Your waifu's waifu is your waifu too.

I'm talking back in the early 2000s, before everyone was obsessed with trannies.

That's more because I dislike Damien, also it required deaging her for it to make sense.

As the class clown and brooding realist archetype, sure
Other than that, BB is for never-ending suffering

Raven is the only woman desperate enough to sleep with Beast Boy and Beast Boy is the only guy dumb enough to sleep with Raven. It makes sense.

Oh so you haven't met Jill Jackson. Beast boy first love or any other girl that didn't know he was beast boy, before the unmasking.

We can blame Marv Wolfman for that because he's the one who brought her back just to throw her away again.

Yeah but they mention raven was.desperate to sleep with gar when we had Jill and other women ready to drop to their knees for him. Not to mention Zachary zantana straight up don't like gar cause raven chose gar over what ever was going on between them.

At least wolfman had her go away without killing her, unlike many others.
