I can't think much about it, since almost half of the show was a set up and last 20% was an ending. It lacked the actual middle part and just rushed through the multidimensional adventure. So while I can understand the themes I can't care much about side or even mine characters. Not having at least 2 episodes for winter world was criminal.

It felt like a lot of things were dropped for a clean ending. I expected the Fionna & Cake’s anti-magic properties to play a bigger role in the plot, and it felt weak that the writers let Cake stay full magic but tried to push the “let’s keep things normal and let F&C citizens decide the shape of their canonized verse” narrative. It’s great that they’re all really real but the decision doesn’t feel “informed” when they don’t have a full understanding of how fricked the magical multiverse they’re apart of really is. The whole F&C side of the story felt simultaneously over-focused and underdeveloped.
Also the Ice Prince, Ice Queen irrelevance double cuckage killed me.
Yeah that type of loose ends being unaddressed rubbed me the wrong way. They hoped through multiple dimensions/worlds and essentially changed some of them significantly. We'll never know how the farm world Finn ended up, what happened to the vampire world PB and Marceline, and how the lich achieving his goal actually matters in the grand scheme of things. Considering the show was Simon centered, it be a great lesson for Simon to be the last of the characters remaining and him learning to come to terms with how Betty used her last wish to save him. It's too clean of an ending with practically no consequences for the events leading up to it.

As someone who liked it, I really wish they went for a more "bitter" than sweet approach. Another anon proposed his theory on ep 10 was going to be nonstop analog horror, back when the Lich Golb fusion was still in the realm of speculation. I wanted there to be more teeth to the consequences of the show. Maybe Simon only gets a glimpse of what happened to Fionna's world through one last distorted voicemail and he contemplates the cost of his journey through the void. Prismo's trapped in the cube forever in his hot-tub, forced to watch what his one selfish act wrought. No crossover characters come to save the day and live there for a happy ending.
Simon has to live with Fionna and Betty's last words to him as he tries to honor the latter's wishes.

PB was going gum nuts preceding Elements, and Marcy went to save her by going after the ice person in the ice kingdom that was causing it. She kind of just aggressively played her bass at Patience.
She definitely wouldn’t try to slay Simon, but she’d be there with her bass axe trying to stop him. Winter King would subdue her one way or another, and be left with the bass.

You know, now that I think about it, why didn't Simon immediately seek out Finn's help with this entire show? Someone of Finn's abilities would have been a constant help in literally every problem they find themselves in. Simon literally had 0 way of contacting Finn, the only two Finns he met was farmboy who rejected helping them and a literal toddler.
Prismo on the other hand had no excuse being moronic and not sending someone like Finn.
Simon was too far on that suicidal martyr path to bother Finn or anyone of use.
Finn could solo every encounter in this miniseries. If PB and Marcy stopped being gay for five seconds and tagged along with Simon too, pretty sure the four of them could've outright punched Betty out of Golb.

My problem is how the moral has Fionna accept her normie world, but they also have Jay and Lil Destiny leave Farmworld, specially since Jay has a bunch of younger siblings who could use his help, and that's without ignoring the possibility that his father may be dead.
Like, I'm fine with leaving your family, but I feel like Jay is a bit young for that and the circumstances aren't ideal.

It tries to make "dying as yourself" a big thing, paralleling Simon's desire to not be Ice King again, but that falls flat because the coffee shop versions AREN'T themselves. They're warped mundane reflections of their original selves - which makes staying this way completely opposite to the explicitly stated theme.
It also pulls this "Simon never sacrificed for Betty" thing out of nowhere and that doesn't seem to have much to do with anything else in the whole series - and then that's extrapolated to Simon saying he deserves to be himself? How are these themes connected? Shouldn't the vision have been about accepting Betty's sacrifice rather than implying he should make one himself (which in this case would mean putting on the crown)
The resolution was also nonsensical. Simon vomits up Fionna's universe and then... puts it inside itself? And then it gets split up inside itself and merges with itself? That was some serious "I don't know how to resolve this plot and I have 3 pages left" shit

Thing is, their world had been reset for a long time now. Everyone who died in Fionna's world are reborn and got a second chance at life including Simone. Simone literally died in their world but became alive again. It's their new reincarnations.
That's a nice thought, but it's not actually part of the show. The show even goes out of its way to display how the warped versions crave their old existence like Gumball's candy people. Cake even says out loud that the magic version is who she really is.
The conflict was set up as Fionnaworld's safety and happiness vs Simon's sanity. Turning over the board at the last second is a poor resolution and thematically inconsistent

Yeah honestly the most fricked up thing that happened in the entire finale was Simon going to therapy instead of finally telling Marceline about what he's been going through.
Telling your daughter you were basically suicidal with grief and depression to the point of doing something reckless and dangerous is not something many people feel in a rush to do. Especially when what was once the only source of your happiness was her happiness, and you have trauma around making her unhappy because of your mental issues.
Finn means well, but there was half an episode dedicated to the point that his therapeutic advice is totally unsuitable for Simon, and attempting to relate to him will just cause more labors.
A large part of the purpose of a therapist is being able to unload on someone who’s an objective third party. You won’t cause them to worry which will make you feel worse, and they won’t try to insistently help in ways that don’t work for you but you don’t have the heart not to try.
Sometimes talking your loved ones about your problems does not make you feel better. In fact it often makes it worse. Because they’re all things that are close to you. It feels like you’re spreading the mold to the unspoiled apples in your heart.
Marcy still deserves to know and Simon should spend time with people who care about him. But let the man rest, give him time. He needs peace and reflection. Making a splash amongst his family and being made to worry about how he’s making them worry is not the way to achieve that yet. They’ll talk when he’s ready.
Also, you guys are kind of overestimating his relationship with Finn. They’re buds with a bizarre history but he genuinely has a more meaningful relationship with Fionna now.

maybe, he doesn't have to completely trauma dump on them, but he should at least let them know how he's doing, my biggest issue is mainly that they're just never seen again after he tries to talk to them in the first episode
Sometimes a thread catches and unravels the sweater. You may just hint that you’ve been in the shits, but they’ll see it’s deeper than that and either attempt to pry you open or remain in silent worry, once again defeating the purpose of you trying to gain inner peace.
The second episode’s purpose was to show that despite caring about him, Marcy and Finn couldn’t help him.
Again, give him time. It takes strength to let people in without anyone getting hurt and he needs to regain his strength. He wants to be a museum, not a ruin.

It’s all such wishy-washy nonsense. At first they tell us that Simon was wrong for not realizing Betty was sacrificing herself, but then Betty (Golbetty?) goes, “Don’t blame yourself, I have no regrets.” They want to have their cake and eat it too.

The show makes it out as though Simon was at fault for not sacrificing anything for Betty which would imply he needs to put others first which would mean putting on the crown
But the takeaway for the character is that he should be more selfish and not sacrifice for Fionna
It's very confused writing, the whole bit with the CYOA novel and Golbetty seemingly has no relevance to the rest of the plot and doesn't really resolve anything. It feels tacked on.
Yeah, suddenly making the whole thing about Betty in the last three episodes seems like a weird swerve. Like, I get that Betty is super-important to Simon, but if you go back and watch episode 2 it wasn’t just about him missing Betty, that was just part of his depression. And the problem is that it has basically no connection to the Fionna side of the plot.
Just as a counterfactual, imagine if instead Simon goes to a universe to meet Ice King (heck, Golbetty could have just done this instead of astral projecting him into Shermy). There he is able to reconcile with his past self and also accept who he is now. This would call back to the beginning better and also complements with Fionna’s arc better.

Well yes he tries to reach Betty at the end of the episode, but the main theme of the episode is that he doesn’t feel at home in the magical world as a normal person. People keep thinking of him as Ice King and he resents that, and that’s also the reason he resents Fionna and Cake. I kinda got the sense that he tried to reach Betty because he thought there was nothing else worthwhile in life.
Simon doesn’t really need to reconcile with Betty; she herself confirms this when she says she has no regrets. He needs to reconcile himself with his past self as Ice King.

No it's not, the show says both of them made mistakes that contributed to their current situation. Betty acknowledged they could've made different ones, but they didn't, and she's choosing to not regret her choices and she feels her time with Simon was ultimately worth it. At no point does the writing point a finger in Simon's face and say, "this is all your fault, you toxic man #metoo". You guys are taking Simon learning a hard but important lesson and reducing it down to: something sad happens to this male character, therefore the writers have a bias against men

It's completely relevant, it's about the relationship of Betty and Simon and the way they part an talk about it.

The show itself is iffy on whether Simon is "at fault" because Betty does try to say neither of them were "wrong," but all the context around that line (her trapping his mind in the future, the storybook) is made to make Simon out to be at fault for carelessness. That's one reason people are calling it confused.
Another is that regardless of whether the message was "Simon you needed to sacrifice more" or "We all make mistakes," neither is an epiphany relevant to the choice to not put on the crown.
I suspect they were trying to convey a message about self-care, that Betty should have valued herself more in their relationship and Simon should likewise value himself over Fionna's entire universe, but if that's the case that's both a shitty message and one poorly conveyed.

One of the frustrating things about all this is it’s EXACTLY what they were doing back in Temple of Mars, only to make Betty go “Haha, nope!” at the last second

Maybe so, but given that it was part of why Simon went on this journey (his friends were either unequipped or unavailable to help him through his most recent bout of sadbrains), you'd think there at least be some explicit callback that shows him comfortably bringing up his deal to Marcy and Finn. They've been friends for years, it isn't something you just keep from them forever, since it'll eventually bother them too.
Oh absolutely, I was actually hoping/expecting to see that in the obligatory ending montage along with checking on the universes they left behind, but I guess getting therapy from Minerva is fine too.
