Goodfellas is bad

Just watched this.
Are all of Scorsese's films this shit? Taxi driver was another shitty "classic".
>Plot goes nowhere, things happens, the movie.
>All characters are repulsive to the point I wanted them killed or caught since the start of the movie. Only exception may be Paulie, good guy overall.
I would only "get" this movie if it was subsidized by the state in an attempt to make mafia less appealing.

You're telling me these psychotic mobsters aren't actually goodfellas at all? Woah

You can have charismatic psychotic monsters. DeNiro was by far the most likeable of the main trio. But Liotta and espcially Pesci were not likeable in the slightest, movie is near unwatchable just by having them on screen.
Doesn't help that Ray Liotta's face is weird/uncanny as is his laughter. I didn't like seeing him at all.

If you want to watch a movie where everything is fun and every character is likeable go watch Avengers or something I don't know what to tell you

          Refer to

You can make that in an appealing way though. Romantize it. Yeah I get it you can integrate the same dreadful feeling into the movie itself which okay is an artistic decision which while valid makes your movie shit. Intetionally shit, but shit nonetheless.
Taxi Driver sometimes manages to get this romantization right so it's not as repulsive.
Same thing happens with No Country For Old Men Ending. Yeah the way it ends conveys the themes of the movie wonderfully, but by doing that makes the movie be shit as A MOVIE.
I just don't like the concept of shitting up a movie to stick with the themes.

You can (and should) have likeable unlikeable characters. Butchering your movie or your characters to set the tone butchers your movie as a result. Since we're on Cinemaphile, take a look at Bateman. He's not funny, he's supposed to be unlikeable. Yet he's enjoyable to watch during the movie.

You're equating the fact YOU didn't have fun with the fact a movie is bad. Most people find Goodfellas interesting and compelling, and enjoy the characters and the drama. I can't argue against your feelings

The point of his movies are to show the harsh realities of urban daily life during the cold war era. All the grit, grime, and degeneracy. Standing in stark contrast to films that showcased bombastic idealism, which was the norm.

I'll agree with you there, casino is better, I think it helps that the guys portrayed in casino were much more important figures within the Mafia than Henry hill was and the setting is alot more interesting too

Shitty take, but as enjoyable as the movie is to watch, I feel like for all the "mafia life is le bad" of the movie, the end actually shows contempt for the audience. Like, "yeah these guys are murdering psychos, but at least they have balls, unlike you". You could make a point that's the perspective of henry Hill and not Scorsese, but then Wold Of Wall Street ends the same exact way by showing the people at the convention (proxy for the audience) as complete morons spellbound by Jordan.

it was Henry hills perspective though, that's what Mafia guys think about regular people

What a bunch of morons. Mafia couldn't exist if everyone were mafia same way street cleaners are equally as important as engineers. They should respect their nonrespectability because they can exist because of it.

The mafia was never appealing for the average American and hollywood has always glorified gangster crime. You are not supposed to like the characters in the good fellas. These movies are about the downfall of evil men.

His movies are stylistically great and he has interesting characters. Guess you can't deal with flawed human beings. Just stick to watching Disney probably. Happy endings assured. Also probably don't leave the house because it's not easy out there, ya know.

I don’t get why you don’t get that this movie is just showing the reality of being in the mob. The movie is based on real events that occurred within the mafia in the 60s-80s.

He’s talking about the fact that morons will dislike movies because they don’t agree with the ethos of the main characters, even if the movie is in a real setting with real people that really existed. Utter moronation.

Yeah, and I agree with him. Still, I don't know why he felt that had anything to do with what I posted.
I like character whose ethos I don't agree with, that has nothing to do with them being obnoxious.
This is not the perfect example since it's a comedic role but take Aldo the Apache in Inglorious Basterds. I hated that guy, his methods and what he stood for. Yet it was not a chore to have him on screen; his scenes were great.
