Fricking Andy Kaufman, Tim and Eric, Lasagna Cat, Family Guy, and about half the things Adult Swim has produced in the last 10 years, have all driven that style of humor into the ground. This new Smiling Friends episode was clearly doing that same thing, but at this point, it's just lame and unimpressive. It certainly isn't funny. But relatability is funnier than jokes now! Why think too hard to write a good script when characters can just mutter "ah-ah-ah" "whuh-whuh-whuh" over each other as they have meta arguments over mundane things?

  27. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

I know this site is against meta shit, but this was an obvious meta joke about how some people found their mundane conversations as entertaining, so they took it to its logical conclusion and made the whole episode a mundane conversation with zero comedy. I'm pretty sure they were not going for comedy here. It was like a deranged April Fool's joke on the audience.

Ok squirt. You're probably in your late teens or early 20s, and have only recently just discovered this brand of "subversive Anti-Humor" that Adult Swim seems to love. I'm probably about 10 years older than you, and believe me, I remember how it felt when I first discovered that style of humor years ago. I thought Andy Kaufman & Tim and Eric were the funniest things in the world. Anything that was "meta" or "trolled the audience" was inherently genius and hilarious. But I'm telling you, once you've seen it enough times like me, it's no longer all that funny or interesting. With age, you come to appreciate actual jokes and wit, which this was completely lacking in. I'm sure you'll understand some day.

And yes, I get that even this discussion that you & I are having, this arguing back and forth about whether or not it was funny, is exactly what they were going for. They want people to get rile up & start dissecting the humor of the episode. You're 100% right dude. i liked it. never seen a better written or performed little farce that represents such a specific sliver of mediocre millennial life. a bit of pretentious shit if you want it too, nothing fancy just some classic ironies.
but then i do like gay theater trash.
and obviously the seething in this thread is part of the comedy

      Anonymous

It's probably the favella monkeys being all mad because the special had barely anything to do with Brazil and you could literally replace it with any other country.
Which is ironic because the chimps were screeching about how "Brazil shouldn't just be used for other people's entertainment, and that it should be done with respect" and blah blah blah

      Anonymous

Millenial life? How was it at all about millenials? It was just a bait and switch gag episode, stop trying to make it sound more profound than it is. Also, if you like good writing, maybe stop watching stuff on adult swim.

        Anonymous

there's certainly universality, but there's also a specific way millennials today relate to each other, something unique to us in the same way that boomers or gen x were unique in that time of their lives. the cultural aspect. the way that interpersonal tension gets diffused, much less aggressively or flaccidly you might say, but also better natured, trying to understand your friend even though they screwed you, trying to step back and see that you fricked up too. and in the process just totally ignoring your surroundings and taking it for granted, or at least trying to wish it away. (this is not so unique though, but maybe a little more ironic as millennials believe they are more respectful and observant. and why go on a trip in the first place if you dislike foreign surroundings, etc. etc. etc.)
i just haven't had this itch scratched so specifically. the bait and switch is only the surface level of the joke, underneath it's still a good scene. i like it.
also should i trust your opinion on writing if you can't even spell "millennial"

we stutter when we're in an uncomfortable angry stressful situation with 3 people talking at once, yes

I just thought it was funny due to how grounded it was
The realistic frustration that the characters experience from the ordeal
The awkwardness of trying to handle the situation while flustered
The call with the usually zany boss where he gives really earnest realistic responses
