Why do old movies hold up so much better than old TV shows?

eh? lots of great series with proper full seasons are excellent and very watchable.

Generally, I disagree. Older TV series were mostly very formulaic, disposably episodic, often corny, did not reward close attention, had poor production values, and prior to the late 90s or so were almost entirely barred from including any edgy content. That doesn't mean it's all bad, but the best stuff produced from the late 90s onward blows the old school stuff out of the water.
The best older movies, on the other hand, can be and often are timeless.
