it is far worse than season 1, almost without exception any (straight) male character will be entirely useless (be it drunk or old and weak) in need of guidance, leadership and/or rescue by strong brown women of limitless potential, it is so overdone that it could pass for satire.
Ironically, the Empire plot is completely original to the show. All the book stuff has been so drastically transformed that it's basically unrecognizable

The only reason I continued on to season 2 was for the empire plot line and it sucks so far. I'm on episode 8. I really doubt it's going to get much better in like 3 episodes.
Moments of season 2 got okay but then the big arc finales were all dogshit. Even the raid on empire because so much about it is unexplained and also driven by a cringe love story that goes nowhere and is pansexual.
But the terminus “twist” is the worst dogshit I’ve ever seen in my life. Even worse that season 1s they way they use the vault is behind criminal it’s vomit inducing

The viewer wants to see the same characters, but going "yeah everybody from last season is dead for hundred of years now" doesnt sit well with the viewer.

Gold? The books are ok but it's a terrible formula for tv. Nothing actually happens it's 95% characters talking to each other and you need an entire new set of characters every couple of hours.
Almost every character in the book is highly intellectual there aren't any normal people in it so it's extremely jarring when these thoughtful, highly capable people get replaced with Black folk and women.
