why not just tunnel under the tree

      Anonymous

the tree is a sentient biological robot designed to keep the navi in a state of a nature of harmony. Basically the Navi were once super advanced aliens but they went "return to monke" so that they could sustainably live in prosperity until the end of their solar system. Just endless millions of years of hunting with the boys, banging your wife at night, and participating in group cultural events.
So the tree wouldn't like you tunneling under it. The next Avatar after 2 is subtitled The Seed Bearer because Eywa retaliates against the humans by sending a seed that basically bio-terraforms the Earth

        Anonymous

the main objective in the first movie was just not pissing off the cat people and create a PR disaster (explicitly said so, idk why they'd broadcast it), they didn't really care about root mama. The mineral is absorbed for that purpose but the stuff under the tree was clearly mostly ore, not part of the tree (yet anyways). No flaming cat people home, not dead cat chilluns etc. PR disaster averted.

Short answer is that it's way harder. They wanted a big mine to get the stuff as efficiently as possible, not a little "I drink your milkshake" pipe. Remember that you have to get all the equipment and vehicles there too.

You can’t watch follow the story and genuinely think that. The Na’vi enjoy a harmony and a symbiosis with their environment that we can only dream of. When they take to the sky on a banshee, they’re not just riding the thing, they’re experiencing flight as only a flying creature can. Would you trade that for lite beer and blue jeans? I wouldn’t.

When Mo’at tells Jake that they will teach him their ways and see if his insanity can be cured, she’s being serious. They look on us and our culture as insane. I like how Douglas Addams put it:

            >”For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.”

His job was ethnic cleansing is the thing.

Like its clear what's gonna happen to the Na'vi if humans get their way. If they don't completely go extinct their population will get reduced by like 99+ percent in multiple stages of genocide and forced displacement and the remainder will just be kept on rumpy little shit miserable reservations at best. You can't even just try and be edgy and double down on might makes right thinking seeing as they literally fought it out and won militarily.

Still their military failing-a morale failing. Could have run their society in a way that didn't completely alienate people they depended on. Just off the top of my head give him his fricking legs back before the expedition. Or just give people their legs back free in general so you get actually motivated true believers volunteering for expeditions like this.

The Na'vi didn't have that problem because they didn't internally mistreat or deprive each other like that

Excellent point. To me, that’s the big distinction between the “human empire” in Avatar and the “fascist” humans in Starship Troopers. In Avatar, you’re a cog, a puppet of corporate interests. In Starship Troopers, you’re treated like pure gold for choosing government service. It shouldn’t come as a surprise which society produces more motivated soldiers.

That's supposed to be him? How?...

One of two ways. He was either a human “avatar” the entire time(think about it - they’d have to have perfected the tech before going through the trouble of growing expensive human/Na’vi hybrids, so why not test it on grunts? The added bonus is they get to be truly fearless), or they corporate sharks figured out that Pandora’s neural network saves backups of anything that dies there, and they figured out a way to download Quaritch’s consciousness.

Cameron has said that it's unpredictable. And I believe him that it's not just going to be the usual "natives win, humans suck" schlock. I think the humans will even win in this next movie. The last movie is called "The Quest for Eywa", so I'm almost thinking that Eywa may branch out to other planets even. She could send out spores to colonize other worlds. And maybe she creates Unobtainium, it does seem to be concentrated at her most sensitive spots, so humans will want to inhabit those planets too

Somehow there must be a way to escape this mortal coil, join us, are you not warriors? Our people have a common enemy. The natural worlds demands the death of all life. This universe is a sparing companion, a trial, a sister not a mother. We dream of better, of escape and of life triumphant. Fight with us, share your ore and meld your courage with ours. Don't lay down and die like you're doing. You survive day by day against nature already, survive further. Stop it! You're fighting on your enemy's side. You and us you blue fricks, we'll be your white fricks and together we'll shove our collecting forearm up fate's ass.
