The big dumb moron can only ever say Hodor. Nobody knew what or what "Hodor" was. Bran routinely skin walks into him. During a climatic moment in the show, Bran and his group are attacked while he is looking at last events in history. He jumps into Hodor at the same time while still in the past, and this minsfricks him. They keep shouting for him to "hold the door" so they can escape, which effects him in the past and fricks his brain up. Hold the door eventually turns into "Hodor."
