I don't know. I can't even put my finger on what, it just feels like they're running out of steam. I still like their older stuff though. Hell, I can't tell you how many times I've fallen asleep to those videos where Mike just goes through their video collection, reading the titles in Plinkett's voice.

They had brief, limited touches with actually famous people, thought they might have had a shot, and it went nowhere. Now they realize that they're stuck and the passion is gone. Mike in particular seems to be pretty mindbroken by that existential realization. He seems like he has the biggest ego, always thought of himself as an unrealized genius. Instead he is a fat alcoholic making videos talking about the works of greater men than he.

Tail end of SA/YTMND/Cinemaphile internet edginess.

The blip.tv Half in the Bag episodes were great. The versions uploaded to YouTube were cut down because less revenue, and it looks like now they've been edited even further ("ORIGINAL UPLOAD DATE:"...3 years earlier).

For the guys who reviewed/deconstructed Star Wars, the commentary track on The Empire Strikes Back baffled me. They have a whole discussion (largely led by Jay, who's usually the savvier one) about how Darth Vader is trying to KILL Luke in their duel. No he isn't.

In one of the newer videos they also bring up "they both have the surname Skywalker!" like it's a plothole that Vader "didn't know". It says in the title crawl Vader is looking for Skywalker, he tells Imperial officers he's looking for Skywalker, he has a conversation with the Emperor about it, then tells Luke he's his dad.

What did they think the actual plot was? Darth Vader didn't know his previous surname and just hated this Luke fella, then decided to research his family tree en route to Cloud City? wat.

        Anonymous

It can be reasoned that he didn't become aware of Luke until after the Battle of Yavin. It's just really weird that Owen and Beru never thought to even attempt to hide Luke's identity.

          Anonymous

Yeah that's fair. Random X-Wing pilot, "The Force is strong with this one."

Think it was the Kenobi series review where Jay "points out" that Vader probably knew who Luke was because "his surname is Skywalker". "...oh my god you're right!"

It explains this in on-screen text in the opening SECONDS of Empire, then gradually explains WHY Skywalker is important. Might as well be obsessively tracking Mon Mothma, get a probe droid to Hoth stat.

What the hell did they think the plot was?

In one of their reviews they constantly bring up a clip of Adam Sandler saying “I’ve never progressed.” And they use it as a diminutive gainer Sandler in a funny bit. But now that describes Mike to a T. They’ve been doing the same thing for more than a decade at this point and have not substantially changed or improved their formula at all. They seem to take no real risks, give themselves no new challenges, and in the trying and failing or succeeding in those challenges they never learn or grow. They’ve stagnated and the world around them has changed. It’s just now finally catching up to them, 2-3 years too late. They should try to make a movie, a real movie again. A non-ironic comedy, or even a serious attempt at an indie drama. That will at the very least give them some kind of challenge or impetus towards their own lives and that will show through in the rest of the work. They’ve become complacent and dead inside as consequence. It doesn’t help that they don’t seem to believe in anything; they know what they’re against but hardly know what they’re for. The only movies Mike seems to like are standard well made blockbusters from 40 years ago. He’s never challenged his own taste to try to appreciate film as a medium for art and still considers it only as popcorn entertainment. Siskel and Ebert would watch the standard fair and review it by the standards of the standard fair but would also review the critical darlings, and even international films that deserved praise and recognition. They refuse to do that and instead just review whatever slop they happened to watch that week that they can turn over into a quick review. Gen X are insufferable for this. They made their entire personality punk rock where nothing could be accepted and appreciated for what it is, and any earnest effort was “gay” and the only smart content was self aware content that was either meta drama or meta ironic comedy. It’s all bullshit.
