It's great when executed properly. I think it's taken a bit of a shitty turn towards "fleshing out the lore", though. The whole point of it being spoopy was that it was strange and unknown. Don't need 5 million videos of background story and analysis. Just show weird face on a video tape.
The Smile Tapes was probably the worst of the more popular bunch, I just couldn't take it seriously, bit I really like some, for example The Mandela Catalogue, Gemini Home Entertainment or Vita Carnis, tho the last one's execution leaves a lot to be desired

It's a low fidelity horror that tends to focus on cryptic story delivery and visual presentation of 80s television and vhs-style (aka analog) visuals and recording errors/glitches, usually presented as found footage that has been archived and uploaded to horror (not always handheld camera, but home records of television to vhs tapes). Common horror visuals and themes include distorting and stretching and misshaping of the human form as well as concepts of isolation, paranoia, and mistrust.
I liked the Smile Tapes, but I know it was rather straight forward and more open to being seen as goofy.

Blair Witch Project is better than Backrooms because they actually put money into it.
I think all of it fails at being truly cryptic because the zoomer target audience can't handle things that really shouldn't be explained. Plus now since the Mandela trash every single one is just a variation of precisely:

If you think the aesthetic of videotapes, recordings and etc are scary, just watch some J-Horror and Found Footage flicks. This is the derivative version of it
I admit that I am just getting old and this is the new wave of zoomer entertainment. I don't have a tiktok and don't watch youtubers, so am not going to be in the loop.
From a distance I can appreciate that it's something new in the horror genre, and I'm glad the kids are getting something more interesting than what Hollywood is puking up.

I take it more as a new form of found footage just with an old VHS format and a ton of distorted stuff. I don't much about it but I don't think there's a truly good example of a film taking advantage of it, but it has potential.

I distinctly get the feeling 90% of the creators don't really have any actual connection or knowledge of analog formats so they're just slapping on a VHS filter because that's the thing to do now. I prefer the ones that actually use the format in some way or try to make it seem believable as a recording or broadcast that might be made.
