It's great when executed properly. I think it's taken a bit of a shitty turn towards "fleshing out the lore", though. The whole point of it being spoopy was that it was strange and unknown. Don't need 5 million videos of background story and analysis. Just show weird face on a video tape.
The Smile Tapes was probably the worst of the more popular bunch, I just couldn't take it seriously, bit I really like some, for example The Mandela Catalogue, Gemini Home Entertainment or Vita Carnis, tho the last one's execution leaves a lot to be desired
I enjoy it. I particularly like >Vita Carnis >Smile Tapes >The Mandela Catalogue >Local 58
I've got Greylock and Winter of 83 on my list of things next to watch.
It's a low fidelity horror that tends to focus on cryptic story delivery and visual presentation of 80s television and vhs-style (aka analog) visuals and recording errors/glitches, usually presented as found footage that has been archived and uploaded to horror (not always handheld camera, but home records of television to vhs tapes). Common horror visuals and themes include distorting and stretching and misshaping of the human form as well as concepts of isolation, paranoia, and mistrust.
Local 58 is cool too, while The Smile Tapes is shit

The Walten Files
I liked the Smile Tapes, but I know it was rather straight forward and more open to being seen as goofy.
I don't really understand why so many of them seem obsessed with having "stories" and "LOOOORE" instead of just telling individual tales using the format of VHS tapes or broadcast recordings. Isn't that a varied enough source?
>I don't really understand why so many of them seem obsessed with having "stories" and "LOOOORE" >why does a story telling medium attract stories
Woah.
>instead of just telling individual tales using the format of VHS tapes or broadcast recordings
There's a few of those out there.
I think all of it fails at being truly cryptic because the zoomer target audience can't handle things that really shouldn't be explained. Plus now since the Mandela trash every single one is just a variation of precisely:
>there's a threat going on >government video, we're the agency of yadda yadda >vhs tape of some friends doing shit >creepy moment >end
If you think the aesthetic of videotapes, recordings and etc are scary, just watch some J-Horror and Found Footage flicks. This is the derivative version of it
I admit that I am just getting old and this is the new wave of zoomer entertainment. I don't have a tiktok and don't watch youtubers, so am not going to be in the loop.
From a distance I can appreciate that it's something new in the horror genre, and I'm glad the kids are getting something more interesting than what Hollywood is puking up.
I take it more as a new form of found footage just with an old VHS format and a ton of distorted stuff. I don't much about it but I don't think there's a truly good example of a film taking advantage of it, but it has potential.
I distinctly get the feeling 90% of the creators don't really have any actual connection or knowledge of analog formats so they're just slapping on a VHS filter because that's the thing to do now. I prefer the ones that actually use the format in some way or try to make it seem believable as a recording or broadcast that might be made.

Well, what do you think the average ages of the producers and the audience are?

Always found it funny that you could survive 90% of Analog horror by not living in the shitty american town its taking place in but the other 10% is basically some world ending disaster that's impossible to escape
not enough porn of it
the Archangel Gabriel is hot, I can give you that

First ep of black mirror, don't bother, it's trash for pseud redditors who want to feel smart.
>>The Mandela Catalogue
Hot garbage. Just stupid.
Local 58 is cool too, while The Smile Tapes is shit
The Walten Files
I just emptied my ant farm down the front of my speedos.
Like most horror, 95% garbage done by people copying a popular thing without a hint of talent or context for why it is the way it is.
>analog horror
What is that?

>uploaded to horror
uploaded to *youtube, rather
Some are multimedia and are shared between youtube, instagram, twitter, and purpose-made websites.
Monument Mythos I wouldn't evem call amlog horror at this point, but it's a lot of fun because it's just batshit insanity.
Whoa that black guy is really dark

>dude vague quasi-religious shit presented as lore
snooze
>all analog horror has to be LORE
Idiot
Still in the thread of the genre you don't like, I see.
I dislike forced attempts to induce fan wikis, I did not say I disliked the idea of analog horror.
I like watching films with actual budgets.
Blair Witch Project is better than Backrooms because they actually put money into it.

the blair witch project came out 25 years ago
That was just found footage.
ok maybe im a moron i thought that was pretty much what analog horror is
I take it more as a new form of found footage just with an old VHS format and a ton of distorted stuff. I don't much about it but I don't think there's a truly good example of a film taking advantage of it, but it has potential.
what's the best video example?
It's not interesting
I haven't found anyone who actually likes it
It's just shitty horror, you may not be as old as you think you are
thanks anon, I appreciate that

most millenials eat that shit up like it's chocolate though
>analog horror?
what is. is it like a creepy pasta?
It's got some overlap with Creepy Pastas. See
