It was a plant just as Lil Nas X is a plant in the music industry. Only reddlt npcs actually liked it, normal people didn't and the movie has been memoryholed except as an object of ridicule

No one was allowed to criticize it.
Bill Simmons ridiculed it and basically called it laughable garbage on the Ringerverse podcast.
That podcast episode was taken down and re-uploaded with his comments removed.
Additionally, Bill had to make an apology on his own podcast stating that he was sorry he did not respect such an important moment for the Asian American community.

Seriously? Is this how bad things have gotten? You can't even publicly say you don't like something without retracting the statement and issuing an apology?

You can't dislike it because it's praised so heavily from an idpol lens. It has le queer characters and le asians. It has le random Rick and Morty tier humor. I fricking hated this movie the longer it went along. First 30 minutes were ok but it gets too big for its britches and tries to pontificate to the audience by the end. It insists upon itself. Frick that.

Movies are not movies anymore, they're a means to an end of social progress. The movie is a VERY IMPORTANT MOMENT for asian-americans, and Queer Americans and is a very important movie. ergo, if you criticize it you criticize minorities, which is RACISM. And we know RACISM is the most evil scourge we must get rid of.

Also there's something fudnamentally wrong with asian-americans as they make the most neurotic parental issues horseshit EVER. Actual asian cinema is fantastic. Michelle Yeoh has been in so many kino herself and she's gonna be remembered most for this giant piece of shit.

Not even an Asian movie. It's an American movie effectively profiting off Asians. I don't get these people.
Watch an actual movie from Asia if you care so much. There's thousands of them.
This has as much value as Jackie Chan in The Tuxedo.

How often has the Oscars given the award to the most deserving film of the year? How often is the winning film even remembered? Being nominated and not winning it tends to be a better mark of quality.

That's what I say that of course it won the Oscars but that's usually synonym with being crap that most people dislike, yet I never heard anyone saying bad things about this one.

It's also a symptom of unorganized media consumption without the talent to make sense of it. The movie's like a child getting dozens of ingredients in the kitchen and mixing them up with only a surface understanding of what he was doing

Because they left religion and have nothing to replace it with.

Wasn't the movie trying to make a statement against nihilism?

It's literally positive nihilism. It's trying to grapple with nothing mattering, then trying to have a positive uplifting life. I personally consider any ideology that has nihilism as the starting point as fundamentally flawed and doomed but whatever.

RT's user score reviews are fake. Unless the Critic score is low they pretty much don't allow negative user reviews in new movies, especially those that are extremely pozzed. The Little Mermaid movie and the Star Wars movies are universally hated by fans but all of them them have 80-90 user scores. It's all bullshit.

I'm interested in watching it mainly for Michelle Yeoh but I expect most of the movie to be shit. Even the title sounds like terrible millenial twitter hire writing

      Anonymous

It's millennial twitter hire writing - it's all about asian americans dealing with their "cultural" traditions, a lesbian child, and nihilism. Yeoh's been in many great films but they're all Hong Kong. She sold out much in the same way Jackie Chan sold out to China. You pick China or Hollywood to sell your soul to. You can't make good films anymore after the end of Hong Kong cinema.

btw, the Chinese takeover of Hong Kong and the guting of their cinema is one of hte biggest cultural crimes of the last 150 years. They had 40 years of making top notch entertaining films. Ranging from simple action films to actual top tier best films of all times.

Aside from the fricking dyke daughter it was a perfectly fine movie about familial love despite all odds. It's fun too. It's a good movie and people were willing to overlook the gay shit. Not to mention gay propaganda is everywhere so why would people be mad NOW about this movie for relatively tame homosexualery ?
