How the FRICK did this movie cost 15 million?

Can someone explain it to me, because I'm genuinely baffled that a movie could cost so little and look as good as a $200+ million American production. Where is the money going?

          It's called
          >Hollywood accounting (also known as Hollywood bookkeeping) is the opaque or creative set of accounting methods used by the film, video, television and music industry to budget and record profits for creative projects. Expenditures can be inflated to reduce or eliminate the reported profit of the project, thereby reducing the amount which the corporation must pay in taxes and royalties or other profit-sharing agreements, as these are based on net profit.

According to Hollywood Accounting no movie has ever made it's money back.

Yeah but it's not like American VFX companies are particularly different. Every single one of those marvel movies outsourced to animation sweatshops in India. And they still cost 500 mil a piece

It's hilarious to me that they even outsource VFX work. At some point America will collapse, not just because of racial disharmony or inept politicians or war or migrant floods, but because israelites in their endless efforts to save a penny outsource literally everything to the point that there's no jobs left and people finally come to their senses.

First of all, it doesn't look as good as big Hollywood films. Yeah, it looks shockingly good, but you can still tell it's low budget.

It's set in Japan while the American Godzilla movies globetrot around the world. King of Monsters alone was set in Antarctica, Arizona, Bermuda, Boston, California, China, Colorado, Germany, Massachussets, Mexico, Washington etc. The whole cast in American Godzilla films is like 2-3x the cast of Minus One. Screenwriters in USA make a lot of money due to WGA while in Japan the industry is owned by the Yakuza and the writers are paid pennies.

Hollywood films also spend a lot of money on famous actors because that's what audiences care about. Godzilla Minus One made 30 million less than that shitty Jennifer Lawrence sex comedy because one of the movies had Jennifer Lawrence in it. That's why Rebecca Hall got 3 million for her role in one of the MonsterVerse films.

This too. I'm not saying there isn't a lot of bloat in Hollywood movies. There IS fat to trim but if you think Hollywood could sustain itself by making 15 million dollar "blockbusters", you're drunk.

Honestly, I look at a film like The Marvels and then Minus One and it's shocking comparing the two. Legit: The Marvels at most times looks almost TV tier aesthetics wise. Minus One looks better in every way. Legendary Goji still looks the best in his 2014 incarnation in my opinion. That CG still looks fricking magnificent. The Marvels had close to a 200Mil budget and looks CW tier. I don't care what the budget it is as long as it doesn't look lazy and shot completely in a warehouse on a greenscreen.

        >I'm not saying there isn't a lot of bloat in Hollywood movies

Yeah, here's someone who works in the biz... from 2013:

        >Comparing the budgets of an $85 million movie and a $10 million movie is an eye-opening look at needless studio waste
        >To give you a better idea of what I’m talking about, I acquired the budgets of two films of a similar genre that, although tonally different, look to the average moviegoer as if they were made on the same scale. Each had two star lead actors and a cast of secondary players who were well known. Both contained significant action sequences, and they were filmed in the same state under the same incentive program. But the studio film cost about $85 million and the independent film came in at $10 million.
        >director gets $5M vs $450k
        >lead actors get $22.5M vs $325k
        >supporting actors get $1.25M vs $5k/week
        >lead producer gets $1.7M vs $750k
        >writers and script doctors get $6.25M vs $300k
        >cinematographer gets $25k/week vs $6k/week
        >below-the-line workers also got $10-20/hour more on studio films
        >studio film has "perk packages" for stars like trailers, private jets, exclusive hair & makeup artists instead of sharing, private assistants, personal drivers, personal chefs, personal trainers, personal security, private gyms, yoga mats...
        >studio film shot for 65 days, indie film shot for 47 days

          >You only have to pay a director or actor a gigantic salary to get him or her to do a mediocre remake of a TV show or a sequel — not a great original script. It just takes one studio to replace their current culture with more of an indie paradigm: Lose a few projects that are made the old way; keep the rest, but only spend the minimum necessary without sacrificing quality; push people to do things faster and without the decadent add-ons that do nothing to make the film better. Once one studio has done this, the resulting increase in profitability would cause the others to follow and we’d have a healthier business.

          Based.

boom this is 100% accurate and actually some hard numbers. this is the problem with all american corporate business, not just hollywood. bloated budgets are there to pad the pockets of the nepotism in crowd, that's it and nothing more. the more money you give americans for a project, the less the end product will be. what we should be doing is giving film studios small budgets and short deadlines, if a director fails to deliver a viable film then the project should be scrapped and written off.

Right it looked better. Modern Hollywood blockbusters look like video game cutscenes. Godzilla vs Kong looked fake as hell. Even though some of the destruction scenes looked off in Minus One, Godzilla himself looked far more believable and tangible than his Hollywood counterpart.

KOTM was shot in Atlanta with a few scenes filmed in Mexico and Boston. The "globe trotting" was all done through sound stages and CGI. It's nearly as visually-cartoonish as the Star Wars prequels and it doesn't feel epic at all.

america makes this same mistake every time they try to do anything, they think that you have to throw the whole kitchen sink into a product for it to be viable. like their tv shows having every single ethnicity represented in every episode with equal amounts of screen time. or like your stupid globetrotting example where they just HAVE to go to every single country on earth for some reason. just slow down and tell a god damned story

There is a lot of bloat but it's also a sort of a "safety in numbers" thing.

Marketing a wide-release in the US is $30 million at the absolute minimum. Soderbergh tried to upend this with some of his films because he thought it was excessive but in the end he had to admit that it's true. Then add another $30 million minimum for foreign markets. That's $60 million for marketing. You need 2.5x because theaters take a cut, taxes and whatever other costs. So just to cover the marketing costs you need to make $150 million.

So if you make a film for $20 million, you need to make $200 million to break even. And if you make a film for $100 million, you need to make $400 million to break even. How many $20 million films make $200 million? Not many. How many $100 million films make $400 million? Many.

A lot of American producitions go overbudget due to VFX changes. If they are well planned out they can be done efficiently while looking good. With American studio meddling you get a new director coming in with only a few weeks to clean other people's mess who decides things need to be changed up to make sense then the VFX studios get told they have to make changes with little time and the only way to get the changes done in time without looking like complete dogshit is to pay a lot. Sometimes they still look like shit.

The acting in it was almost perfect from beginning to end. The only issue I had with it is the guy has PSTD from what he went though, so he'd zone out and have panic attacks time to time and those were the only time I felt anyone in the film over-acted. It felt like a Japanese TV show then. This is me looking for things to complain about though. I saw it in theaters twice. I loved it. That moment when the black rain falls is amazing. Due to diversity quotas and demoralization american companies are now filled with incompetent and demotivated people. Thus everything costs 10 times more compared to other countries.

This is why the US NEED to cheat at global economy to protect their rank: with protectionism, forcing other countries to apply their embargoes, wars, blowing up pipelines, spying on allies before negotiations...

Yes because getting wet and drying off for another take costs time and time=money.

Doing everything in a studio with CGI saves so much time. With these revolutionary cost savings the Hollywood films only cost $200-300 million.

CGI created by a team of people working for months is more expensive than practical effects. CGI created by AI within seconds is cheaper than practical effects.

That's because quality isn't hard to achieve if you push people a bit.
You know how you have a group project in highschool and all of you have a week to complete the project? Yeah, most of the time no one does anything except one or two people. However give that project only a day and the group will often complete it as quickly as possible. I think this is a good comparison to movie budgets (and other entertainment media like video games).
Projects with less money have to get creative, while projects with way too much money often try ridiculously expensive methods to get the same fricking quality and most of the time it doesn't even work out. High budget productions (nowadays) rarely ever show that they used their money for the sake of quality.

Take The Marvels as an illustrative examples; that had a casting budget of $14mil. Samuel L Jackson alone got $7mil, Brie got around $5mil. They spent another $30mil on salaries for the rest of the crew, in part because of the choice to film it across several countries (USA, UK, Italy) so needed to keep hiring different teams. ILM set rates of several thousand dollars per minute of footage for their effects work

The better question is why do Hollywood movies have such insanely bloated budgets? For blockbusters specifically you can’t even say better cgi since the standards for acceptable cgi has been consistently dropping for nearly a decade now.
I don’t mind low budget cgi if it at least has competent and inspired direction(Minus One and Shin Kamen Rider are recent examples I can think of). Meanwhile western capeshit has gotten so insanely homogenized and uninspired on top of looking like shit.

The CGI is basically HBO-tier. Godzilla does stick out if you really look- thought this from the first scene on Odo island. Part of the Ginza attack looks solid but the scene of him tearing up the stadium showed their limitations.
That said I don't care, the Godzilla design was cool and it worked well enough not to stick out. The CGI not being the highest quality doesn't impede scenes like the minesweeper boat chase of the final scene of the boats tying him up. Those are all driven by the human actors.
The reason better Hollywood CGI looks worse is because it's treated without any gravity within the movies themselves. They toss in hoards of badguys the good guys just rip through without any sweat or stress. In the stadium scene I mentioned, the lower par CGI doesn't impede the scene because the focus is on the camera crew's dilema. It's the same principle why the suit movies can hold up despite clearly not being real creatures; the movie treats them as such.

      >The CGI not being the highest quality doesn't impede scenes like the minesweeper boat chase
I'm not one of those "this is the best Godzilla movie of all time" drones but I will say that scene is one of the best things to grace the series, ever. And the effects were great in that scene, especially the water effects when he swims away, and the closeups of the mine in his mouth which I'm still convinced has to be a model.

        Anonymous

I thought the same thing about the mine in his mouth, it looked like a still Godzilla model with a ball rolling around the water/jaw. Saw it 3 times in theaters and spent the 2nd and 3rd times trying to see if there were any shots using rubber suits/minatures/models, that was the only one I could catch.

          Anonymous

The tricky thing is, if it were a miniature head, the water would be out of scale and would have to be CG, or else they literally made a full-scale Godzilla mouth and dragged it through the water, which I doubt. Either that or it's just had really effective lighting/shading and since it didn't move, it looked convincing.

      THIS, oh so much this

99% of israelitellywood budget goes to laundering it all for child orgies and drugs and greasing palms.
These Japanese film makers set out to make a cool Godzilla movie and did. Hollywood film makers who make a superhero movie for instance set out to destroy the superhero and piss everyone off and launder blood money and they do.

15 mill is still fricking ridiculous. I could make this godzilla in blender(completely free program) utilizing thousands of hours of free tutorials and resources. only thing holding me back is a high end computer capable of rendering it out, and one of those is no where close to 15 mill.

I doubt you could do any of it. I went to a great animation school and it takes the last 2 years of a 4 year degree for an animator to complete their thesis and they are like 5 minutes long. And these schools cost like $40k a year.
