Screenwriters in USA make a lot of money due to WGA while in Japan the industry is owned by the Yakuza and the writers are paid pennies.

Godzilla Minus One made 30 million less than that shitty Jennifer Lawrence sex comedy because one of the movies had Jennifer Lawrence in it. Honestly, I look at a film like The Marvels and then Minus One and it's shocking comparing the two. Legit: The Marvels at most times looks almost TV tier aesthetics wise. Minus One looks better in every way. Legendary Goji still looks the best in his 2014 incarnation in my opinion. That CG still looks fricking magnificent. The Marvels had close to a 200Mil budget and looks CW tier. I don't care what the budget it is as long as it doesn't look lazy and shot completely in a warehouse on a greenscreen.

KOTM was shot in Atlanta with a few scenes filmed in Mexico and Boston. The "globe trotting" was all done through sound stages and CGI. It's nearly as visually-cartoonish as the Star Wars prequels and it doesn't feel epic at all.
That being said, GMO's CGI doesn't look that good simply judging from the trailers. They didn't even do mo-cap for Godzilla.

Marketing a wide-release in the US is $30 million at the absolute minimum. Soderbergh tried to upend this with some of his films because he thought it was excessive but in the end he had to admit that it's true. Then add another $30 million minimum for foreign markets. That's $60 million for marketing. You need 2.5x because theaters take a cut, taxes and whatever other costs. So just to cover the marketing costs you need to make $150 million.
So if you make a film for $20 million, you need to make $200 million to break even. And if you make a film for $100 million, you need to make $400 million to break even. How many $20 million films make $200 million? Not many. How many $100 million films make $400 million? Many.

Before this he had just made a movie about ww2 pilot so they had a lot ready to go.
There was really one one city attack scene, and the two other big scenes were done on open water. Still very well done though
A lot of American producitions go overbudget due to VFX changes. If they are well planned out they can be done efficiently while looking good. With American studio meddling you get a new director coming in with only a few weeks to clean other people's mess who decides things need to be changed up to make sense then the VFX studios get told they have to make changes with little time and the only way to get the changes done in time without looking like complete dogshit is to pay a lot. Sometimes they still look like shit.

The film itself isn't as successful as it is just because of the VFX.
Even if the quality of CG deteriorates a little, the audience will tolerate it as long as the story is good.
The acting in it was almost perfect from beginning to end. The only issue I had with it is the guy has PSTD from what he went though, so he'd zone out and have panic attacks time to time and those were the only time I felt anyone in the film over-acted. It felt like a Japanese TV show then. This is me looking for things to complain about though. I saw it in theaters twice. I loved it. That moment when the black rain falls is amazing. One of my top moments in a godzilla film ever.
That's kind of what PTSD looks like though. It's not a subtle thing when you have a break.

I really just can't agree, I thought it looked great. I don't really feel there were any shots that I thought stood out as being bad either. I was so into the film, maybe I just wasn't being terribly critical, but it really all looked great to me.
There was one scene where Goji is juxtaposed with the shore and the city and he looks off. Again, just searching for things here. Other than that it almost looked like a man in a suit at times. Pretty incredible in my opinion.

That's because quality isn't hard to achieve if you push people a bit.
You know how you have a group project in highschool and all of you have a week to complete the project? Yeah, most of the time no one does anything except one or two people. However give that project only a day and the group will often complete it as quickly as possible. I think this is a good comparison to movie budgets (and other entertainment media like video games).
Projects with less money have to get creative, while projects with way too much money often try ridiculously expensive methods to get the same fricking quality and most of the time it doesn't even work out. High budget productions (nowadays) rarely ever show that they used their money for the sake of quality.

Take The Marvels as an illustrative examples; that had a casting budget of $14mil. Samuel L Jackson alone got $7mil, Brie got around $5mil. They spent another $30mil on salaries for the rest of the crew, in part because of the choice to film it across several countries (USA, UK, Italy) so needed to keep hiring different teams. ILM set rates of several thousand dollars per minute of footage for their effects work
The better question is why do Hollywood movies have such insanely bloated budgets? For blockbusters specifically you can’t even say better cgi since the standards for acceptable cgi has been consistently dropping for nearly a decade now.

Went to see this last night; I'm not really into kaiju stuff but I was pleasantly surprised, quite probably my movie of the year.
Japanese animators are overworked and underpayed.
The CGI is basically HBO-tier. Godzilla does stick out if you really look- thought this from the first scene on Odo island. Part of the Ginza attack looks solid but the scene of him tearing up the stadium showed their limitations.
That said I don't care, the Godzilla design was cool and it worked well enough not to stick out. The CGI not being the highest quality doesn't impede scenes like the minesweeper boat chase of the final scene of the boats tying him up. Those are all driven by the human actors.
The reason better Hollywood CGI looks worse is because it's treated without any gravity within the movies themselves. They toss in hoards of badguys the good guys just rip through without any sweat or stress. In the stadium scene I mentioned, the lower par CGI doesn't impede the scene because the focus is on the camera crew's dilema. It's the same principle why the suit movies can hold up despite clearly not being real creatures; the movie treats them as such.

I'm not one of those "this is the best Godzilla movie of all time" drones but I will say that scene is one of the best things to grace the series, ever. And the effects were great in that scene, especially the water effects when he swims away, and the closeups of the mine in his mouth which I'm still convinced has to be a model.
I thought the same thing about the mine in his mouth, it looked like a still Godzilla model with a ball rolling around the water/jaw. Saw it 3 times in theaters and spent the 2nd and 3rd times trying to see if there were any shots using rubber suits/minatures/models, that was the only one I could catch.
The tricky thing is, if it were a miniature head, the water would be out of scale and would have to be CG, or else they literally made a full-scale Godzilla mouth and dragged it through the water, which I doubt. Either that or it's just had really effective lighting/shading and since it didn't move, it looked convincing.

15 mill is still fricking ridiculous. I could make this godzilla in blender(completely free program) utilizing thousands of hours of free tutorials and resources. only thing holding me back is a high end computer capable of rendering it out, and one of those is no where close to 15 mill.
I would charge a flat rate of 50,000 along with a tiny percentage of box office along with 1/2 cent every frame my work is shown on streaming
I doubt you could do any of it. I went to a great animation school and it takes the last 2 years of a 4 year degree for an animator to complete their thesis and they are like 5 minutes long. And these schools cost like $40k a year.
You can be self taught but you're not going to be anywhere close to pro in the same time frame.
