Judo has some great stuff, and is obviously the basis for BJJ. Its shortcomings pretty much all come from the competition ruleset rather than the martial art. Sure Judoka get dabbed on by wrestlers, but so do boxers and Nak Muay.
Karate has the same issue where the competition ruleset lends itself towards a fairly ineffectual style, but it can be adapted into something great.
Muay Thai is 100% the best striking style though, and it's a lot of fun.

How did they do it?
By removing as many comic elements as possible, the guy who made the show wanted it to be as grounded and serious as it could be with a big green guy in a wig running around. There weren't monsters in every episode, the world was never at risk, there were no homosexual costumes, there was no CGI, Johnson also happened to get a very talented actor for the main human character. All of this culminated in a show that could feature a comic book character but also have very little actual inspiration from the comics themselves.
Both shows are grounded. The problem IF is:
