I don't remember much outside of his dad dying a comedic death and the villain I think having the same voice as lego batman

I tried watching the sequel and had to stop when Lani pulls off this ridiculous acrobatic move set to save Arnold feeling so ungrounded compared to the original.

god that clip kills me every time. Jokes aside, though, I agree. It's the down-to-earth parody of Behind the Music type shit that makes Surf's Up work and the sequel really did not get that.

I'll never get over how randomly deep the dialogue gets
    >I don't understand why everybody have to be so judgmental. I understand why mom's judgmental. I think it's 'cause she cares, *partially*. Think it's also partially 'cause, everyone else is lookin' at her like, "Hey, Cody's just a bum." "Cody's this," "Cody's that," "Cody's this."
    >[pause]
    >Cody's me, bro. Let me be me. When is that going to start?

Weird idea to present in a mockumetary

This movie is great. Extremely unique format and presentation with the documentary stuff while still maintaining decent characters and plot.

I really liked this movie and I honestly wish there were more like it. The idea of an animated mockumentary about a fictional world is so much fricking fun and I wish more like it existed.

Unironically a great movie in writing and animation. It was the first movie to use VR camera techniques that Disney later pretended they invented for the shitty live action Lion King. Also can’t think of an animated movie that got water this right and it’s been like 15 years

Yeah, that couldn't have been an easy thing to recreate for a whole movie. Surf's Up is special because of that. I can't think of many feature-length animated mockumentaries off the top of my head.

It's a fricking great movie, easily one of the best animated films of the 2000s. The animation holds up a lot better than some of its peers too. It does feel like it's been forgotten somewhat.

We definitely took Happy Feet and this whole era for granted. Now you're lucky to have an animated film with avians. It's all anthropomorphic dogs and foxes and mammals.

It is. It's safe and predictable story wise, but the charm and documentary gimmick really sells it. The Home Movies style dialogue is great as well. So many gags. Very natural sounding dialogue performances that aren't just long pauses between words, stuttering, and forced unnatural sounding stumbling over words like how "natural" dialogue is depicted in cartoons these days. I don't even remember ever seeing a trailer for this thing on tv when it came out. Only posters and promotional images. I just bought the dvd on a whim while in the store one day. Watching it felt so nostalgic even though it was something I've never seen before. I'm sure 90% of that has to do with the music. I guess that's like a cheat code, but I'd like to believe the film itself has some sort of magic without that. It's just so fun and absolutely chill. Easy movie for multi viewing. Even the commentary track.

      >It's safe and predictable story wise
In earlier drafts of the script Cody won the trophy, so I think what they actually did is a little different from the 100% predictable idea.

    >gets rejected and blown off
    >even worse, he's shamed
    >the homie who literally faked his own death for several years because he lost a contest is judging cody for taking the competition too seriously when all he asked was for Z to be there to watch
    >the viewer is somehow supposed to think cody is an butthole at this moment
