I tried watching the sequel and had to stop when Lani pulls off this ridiculous acrobatic move set to save Arnold feeling so ungrounded compared to the original.
god that clip kills me every time. Jokes aside, though, I agree. It's the down-to-earth parody of Behind the Music type shit that makes Surf's Up work and the sequel really did not get that.
I'll never get over how randomly deep the dialogue gets >I don't understand why everybody have to be so judgmental. I understand why mom's judgmental. I think it's 'cause she cares, *partially*. Think it's also partially 'cause, everyone else is lookin' at her like, "Hey, Cody's just a bum." "Cody's this," "Cody's that," "Cody's this." >[pause] >Cody's me, bro. Let me be me. When is that going to start?
>Z became so depressed over being outskilled, his manger's friendship being exploitative greed, and realizing most of his fans were fairweather types that he chose fake suicide as his way out
Weird idea to present in a mockumetary
>the tourny scouts actually show up >the first thing Cody does is not run to see them, but to his mom to get her to come along >she refuses >he asks her to wish him luck >she doesn't
That did hurt, but it was almost made up for at the end when she takes his side after the brother laughs at Cody not getting the trophy but getting a girl.
This movie is great. Extremely unique format and presentation with the documentary stuff while still maintaining decent characters and plot.
I really liked this movie and I honestly wish there were more like it. The idea of an animated mockumentary about a fictional world is so much fricking fun and I wish more like it existed.
Unironically a great movie in writing and animation. It was the first movie to use VR camera techniques that Disney later pretended they invented for the shitty live action Lion King. Also can’t think of an animated movie that got water this right and it’s been like 15 years
Yeah, that couldn't have been an easy thing to recreate for a whole movie. Surf's Up is special because of that. I can't think of many feature-length animated mockumentaries off the top of my head.
I think this movie was the final nail in the coffin for me becoming a hopeless degenerate. I distinctly remember liking it in a way I didn't fully understand at the time.
It's a fricking great movie, easily one of the best animated films of the 2000s. The animation holds up a lot better than some of its peers too. It does feel like it's been forgotten somewhat.
We don't talk about the sequel.
>We don't talk about the sequel.
Who's responsible for that weird WWE push in children's animation around that time? I know Surf's Up wasn't the only franchise to get such treatment
it was surprising because i remember dismissing it at first because it looked ridiculoud and trying too hard to follow trends. come on, penguins doing extreme sport? how lame!

>Where have you been, Z? >What happened? >Oh, you know... ...I got lost for a little while. But that kid, that kid there, Cody... He pointed the way back
It takes itself way too seriously, I remember my conservative dad all but losing his shit when he realized out the movie had an environmental message when we went to see it though, which was funny.
Frick, why did Surf's Up and Happy Feet make the female penguins so hot and sexy? haha
We definitely took Happy Feet and this whole era for granted. Now you're lucky to have an animated film with avians. It's all anthropomorphic dogs and foxes and mammals.
Didn't even do well enough and I know the fur gays are to blame, it's time we end them once and for all because I'm not standing for this shit anymore.
It is. It's safe and predictable story wise, but the charm and documentary gimmick really sells it. The Home Movies style dialogue is great as well. So many gags. Very natural sounding dialogue performances that aren't just long pauses between words, stuttering, and forced unnatural sounding stumbling over words like how "natural" dialogue is depicted in cartoons these days. I don't even remember ever seeing a trailer for this thing on tv when it came out. Only posters and promotional images. I just bought the dvd on a whim while in the store one day. Watching it felt so nostalgic even though it was something I've never seen before. I'm sure 90% of that has to do with the music. I guess that's like a cheat code, but I'd like to believe the film itself has some sort of magic without that. It's just so fun and absolutely chill. Easy movie for multi viewing. Even the commentary track.
>It's safe and predictable story wise
In earlier drafts of the script Cody won the trophy, so I think what they actually did is a little different from the 100% predictable idea.
>excitedly asks his mom to watch him surf just once >an opportunity of a lifetime and he's clearly proud >gets rejected and blown off, knowing that she still thinks he's just a loser >excitedly asks Big Z to watch him surf in the contest after bonding with him >gets rejected and blown off >even worse, he's shamed >the homie who literally faked his own death for several years because he lost a contest is judging cody for taking the competition too seriously when all he asked was for Z to be there to watch >the viewer is somehow supposed to think cody is an butthole at this moment >b-but he just didnt want cody to go down the same path
bullshit. Cody did nothing wrong
I don't remember much outside of his dad dying a comedic death and the villain I think having the same voice as lego batman
The only thig I remember was the chicken was being played by Napoleon Dynamite, I think there was another one as well from the cast too
I tried watching the sequel and had to stop when Lani pulls off this ridiculous acrobatic move set to save Arnold feeling so ungrounded compared to the original.

Fuuuuuuuck Imma watch it now, shits a great movie
Same, the tone was what made it work
He was voiced by Diedrich Bader, aka BatB Batman, so you were close
Mogs Happy Feet
oh yeah definitely
i liked it
as a kid and even now
a good movie overall
I'll never get over how randomly deep the dialogue gets

That moment actually felt too real.
That did hurt, but it was almost made up for at the end when she takes his side after the brother laughs at Cody not getting the trophy but getting a girl.

Kino
i like it, the soundtrack is also pretty cool
That sugar rat song had no reason being so comfy
Say what you will about sugar ray, this song matched the scene perfectly
Dude wtf, I was just watching a video of autist young Nick Mullen from 2012 after he got punched for dissing Sugar Ray.
It's also one of the only animated mockumentaries, which says a lot.
It premiered on my birthday. It was a good birthday. Shakey's for lunch, because im a simple person
The PS2 game for it is pretty good.
I spent so many hours on that game
That was one of the very, very last games for Gamecube
I still remember playing it to this day, such a great game and part of the reason why I still like the movie.
I should play it
Unironically a great movie in writing and animation. It was the first movie to use VR camera techniques that Disney later pretended they invented for the shitty live action Lion King. Also can’t think of an animated movie that got water this right and it’s been like 15 years
Kung Fu Panda 1 reminds me of this movie. It's a silly concept, yet it's well executed and has some heart/depth.
I liked how it was shot as a documentary
Yeah, that couldn't have been an easy thing to recreate for a whole movie. Surf's Up is special because of that. I can't think of many feature-length animated mockumentaries off the top of my head.
sexy penguin girls
for me, its chicken joe
Frick, why did Surf's Up and Happy Feet make the female penguins so hot and sexy? haha
I jerked off to this scene multiple times as a kid
I think this movie was the final nail in the coffin for me becoming a hopeless degenerate. I distinctly remember liking it in a way I didn't fully understand at the time.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it was Vince McMahon.

2007 was a good year for CGI movies
Literally me 10 years ago 🙁
>Where have you been, Z?
>What happened?
>Oh, you know... ...I got lost for a little while. But that kid, that kid there, Cody... He pointed the way back
Love it
Hell of an improvement over Open Season. Not nearly as crass.
>I won?
Captcha: KGAY
The water in this movie looked really good, I love the ending scene where they're surfing
I was so fricking sick of penguin movies that I've never seen it and probably never will.
That was a really weird oversaturation period of penguins
It's like every single producer in Hollywood went to the same focus group of penguin lovers
Farce of the penguins was a trip
I found Happy Feet to be similarly charming and uplifting. Robin Williams went crazy in that film
Nah Happy Feet felt off to me
It takes itself way too seriously, I remember my conservative dad all but losing his shit when he realized out the movie had an environmental message when we went to see it though, which was funny.
It was heavy handed and moronic
We definitely took Happy Feet and this whole era for granted. Now you're lucky to have an animated film with avians. It's all anthropomorphic dogs and foxes and mammals.
Migration?
fricking sick of these fox fricker suckers
Didn't even do well enough and I know the fur gays are to blame, it's time we end them once and for all because I'm not standing for this shit anymore.
>A Major Ocean Picture
This movie is probably what introduced at least some people to Green Day.
And those people are probably old enough to post here.
