Haven't seen BJM but Synecdoche has plenty of laugh out loud funny parts. Like the priest's speech at the funeral, how it goes from sad and real to overwrought and wavers between them from moment to moment. It's brilliant, although the performance could have more to do with that than the script.

why are you watching movies and worrying about what the director meant. you woke up in the wild one day and used to take everything at face value. now youre filtering yourself from finding something good about the movies you find unpleasant by genuinely engaging with this phantom of a director conception youre so personally offended by. its all whispers in the woods, anon. things might not be what you think they are.

You take things at face value as a baby because you literally know nothing, you are an randomly weighted collection of electrical signal processors attached to a screaming and shitting mechanism.
We can't even process the world to understand what we're seeing until we start to feel out what we're looking at.
You're advocating for viewing movies from the lens of a rock or a vegetable. If everyone watched movies this way, the takeaway would always be "I just watched a movie - there were lights and sound and moving colors".

Has anyone here ever read the original script for Being John Malkovich? The second half once Craig enters Malkovich is absolutely bizarre. Would've been awful on film. Feels like the sort of constraints on his work that were there earlier have been taken away as his career and profile have progressed and his work has suffered because of it.

QRD on what the script is like?

Also is that really true though? I thought I'm Thinking of Ending Things was highly regarded

        >QRD on what the script is like?
Craig becomes famous for puppeteering Malkovich instead of Malkovich becoming a famous puppeteer. Then the group that were planning to inhabit Malkovich are actually lead by the Devil and Craig and his Malkovich puppet battle a giant fire breathing puppet operated by the Devil. It's weird.
        >I thought I'm Thinking of Ending Things was highly regarded
All his stuff is highly regarded, I don't care what critics think, that's my own opinion. I think Kaufman is a great writer but like many I think he needs parameters and boundaries otherwise his head goes up his own ass.

I don't understand how you felt that way about such a laid back movie.
That sounds more like you're insecure about your own intelligence.

I see lots of self absorbed smugness but how is it 'parodying' that
Is it because it's vaguely self aware or something and therefore everything in it is beyond criticism

Kaufman is the only person whose films I'm actually afraid of watching. Still haven't worked up the nerve to watch Anomalisa and I'm Thinking of Ending Things. Being John Malkovich is a masterpiece. Also, I'm not smart enough for Synecdoche NY, I get some general themes but always get lost.

Anomalisa is probably his most accessible film.

        Anonymous

No way. Eternal Sunshine is his most accessible. Maybe Adaptation. A lot of people are going to be put off from the pacing of Anomalisa, not to mention that it's with puppets, has an awkward and long sex scene and every character aside from two (intentionally) sound exactly the same.

          Anonymous

Oh yeah I completely forgot Kaufman direct Eternal Sunshine lol
That being said I'd still put Anomalisa as "accessible" even if slightly, especially compared to Synedoche, ITOET and even Being John Malkovich.

is an unbearable homosexual so for that reason alone i would never watch it anyway, i mean this guy is born and raised american but speaks like he learned english yesterday, the reason is because he went to france for a few years, learnt french and now speaks english with a fake french accent, just to let everyone know that he can speak french. imagine being that way and not having the excuse that you are under the age of 7.
