The anime is far superior obviously, but back then I left the theater thinking "Well that was fine". That being said I've never watched it once again lol, only right when it came out in the theater.
It had some really great scenes with great cyberpunk vibes. I think ghost in the shell fits way, like a lot of the Cyberpunk IPs fits better as a series. Movies calls for spectacle. A series could have taken it's time and let us feel the setting. Sci-fi movies need to be efficient in it's story-telling for obvious reasons. Hell if you look at the trailer, it's just showing us the world and its enough Then the movie comes and you actually need good writing.

This. There was a CGI hologram snake crawling over the city in one of the shots. It was a huge snake. I suppose it was meant to be a commercial for something. It never got explained how this snake got there, as a hologram, crawling over the city. There was no visual storytelling. That's not how worldbuilding works. You can't just slap some shit on there you think that looks cool and say: this is good cyberpunk.
Not to mention everything had that grey smudgey look that all cheap CG has.

ScarJo version is a very westernized 'muh special snowflake' retelling of the 1995 anime, which was about being a cog in the machine and finding your own identity regardless. The Major in the anime had a stock full body prosthetic (with some combat enhancements) that was owned by the government. She was so melancholic in the anime because she was anything but a special snowflake.
picrel was iconically bad, to the point where it's trash kino. great entertainment with friends, something to laugh and piss at. i had a great time watching it.
GITS was okay, but that's about it. some nice aesthetics (i'm not of fan of that "nude" suit though), but otherwise unremarkable and therefore unmemorable.
It isn't good because the source material (the anime movie) sucked.

Haven't read the manga, but I saw this in the theater not having watched the original and thought it was fine even if it wasn't amazing. Then I watched the anime and had the exact same feeling at the end. If anything I thought the live action one had more interesting characters while the anime was prettier visually.
It has the worst dialogue I have ever seen and any good or cool visual element is lifted straight from the animated movie but done worse.

One of the few things I remember that was moronic about the show was an episode with an ersatz Che Geuvara or something making clones of himself so that if he died is he shitty revolution wouldn't go down with him and The Major commenting on how noble that was because apparently people can't do anything on their own without commie cults of personality to trick them.
