I like the idea more than the actual film. It's bold to have all these machismo characters get completely emasculated. Even Arnie is on the backfoot and literally crawling in the mud. Some scenes are kino enough to justify re-watches. I love when Billy makes his last stand. I adore that wide shot of the Predator standing on the log at night, completely torching the forest because he can't see Arnold, which is reminiscent of when the cast were firing aimlessly into the jungle.

      >I love when Billy makes his last stand
I liked Billy, so I was actually quite upset when he just got instantly off-screen'd afterwards.
      >I adore that wide shot of the Predator standing on the log at night, completely torching the forest because he can't see Arnold
Like I said, the Predator is fricking cool. But that's really the only appeal of this film for me.

      >I just don't even think it was that good of an action movie

I wanted to gauge some of you guys' opinions on the movie to understand what people see in it, because I like to think I give every movie (even the ones I don't like) some appreciation via discussion. I don't understand why you Black folk hate discussion, I thought that was the entire point of this board.

I don't think it overrated. It's a great genre movie. It had some cool sequences and plays with the tropes but gave a good rousing ending which is exactly what you would want from a movie like this. You know what you should expect from the trailer before going in and the build up throughout.

It's rewatchable now, it's not the first thing I would watch if is was looking for something in that era because tastes move about and shift but occasionally it's good to go back and that is fine considering its age.

Great premise, shot well, great music, great cast, great atmosphere, the effects still look good, no redundant scenes, perfect pacing, tension, good jokes that don't disrupt the serious tone, iconic villain.

I can easily believe that he juiced.
Ventura didn't seem to juice, he was just bigger than all of them in size. He surely had juiced, but not for the movie specifically. Chavez and Shane Black didn't look on gear. Bill Duke never took his shirt off in the movie.

Predator 2 is a much better film with more memorable characters, conflicts, and settings. The setpieces are also fantastic and more memorable than the first film.

I respect Predator for being first and being a fun, tense action flick, but Predator 2 really lives up to the premise's potential.

Disagree completely, even though I love Predator 2 for completely different reasons. It's one of the last films to have that sweaty, sleazy look of films like To Live And Die In LA. Also it's really mean, like RoboCop.

There are some films, sacred cows if you will where the hype isn't just justified it exceeds it. Predator is perfect from beginning to end. No wasted shots or extraneous scenes. The casting is perfect. The editing is perfect. Everyone gets their due. No character is wasted. I'm sorry but to even hear someone talk shit about Predator is bizarre to me. Something about this poster I love so much. It's framed and on my wall. I also really dig how Arnold looked in this film. I think it's unironically his best acting and the best he's ever looked. He lost a bunch of weight to be more believeable as a special forces guy, and it ended up giving his cheeks that sunken in look. His skull would really loon unique, kind of adding to Predator lore.

what separates Predator from something like the Expendables or Mission Impossible is that while Arnold is a leader, some of the other characters steps in the group has their own specialty, and steps up when need for, exactly like a hunting team. We have Billy the tracker, Poncho the linguist, Blain the Ox, Mac the Pigslammer, Hawk the Joker and Dillon the stupid black guy.

Its the same with the original Die Hard. The villains has each their own unique story and abilities which make them stand out more. Some like candy, other likes babes. Some are brothers, others are Black folk, and so on. Compare the first Die Hard to the fourth. In the fouth the villains get more stereotyped: the karate-girl, the french parkour-expert, the nerdish hacker.

That is where Mad Max: Fury Road succeeded; it had plenty of interesting characters. But when I look at a list of the other top action movies of the 2010s https://www.imdb.com/list/ls083234729/ I notices a lack of "human" character development.

Any one-dimensional genre shit film like Predator and The Thing are by default overrated by plebs and accurately rated by filmmakers and critics. There's a reason these two films are internet pleb favorites, but when you get to credible swaths of people suddenly they fall into the hundreds, or thousands, as they absolutely fricking should. Calling The Thing a top 10 all time film is a gigantic pleb flag.

McTiernans (predator die hard hunt for red October last action hero) adaption of the eaters of the dead (the 13th Warrior) by Michael Crichton, raped the mouse (touchstone) so hard on budget that they fired him and brought Crichton himself in to finish the production. A fantastic film all around. And if you don't like predator, you're wrong.
