They named the town Springfield specifically because it was the most common name for municipalities in the US. The intent is that it feels like it could be anywhere, including (you)r hometown. In terms of design, it's mostly based on a generic Midwestern town from a state like Illinois or Ohio, with elements of Groening's home state of Oregon.

Most animation studios are in California and they absolutely despise the South. They refuse to even acknowledge the existence of the Dixie states unless they absolutely have to. Squidbillies exists because Williams St studios is in Atlanta, and Huckleberry Hound was made by people who grew up before WW2.

Weird. You'd think with the recent black representation push they'd be all over setting stories in the niggest states.

          Anonymous

Because the black culture they're after is the one that was fetishised for 40 years: Harlem Revival and wesr coast G-Soul. Southern black culture has existed in a blind spot to them.
I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't at least partially out of spite; a feeling that southern blacks aren't "as good as" northern/west coast blacks because they didn't join their 'brothers' in the mass exodus from the South that occurred in the 1960s.

gay who grew up in the midwest, Springfield is obviously a coastal State, it's doesn't have that "stuck in the middle of nowhere" feeling most midwest towns do (Ogdenville is absolutely meant to be a midwest town though). All shit aside it always felt to me like a West coast state specifically. Washington or Oregon work best.

It was pretty fun for what it was, basically a sendup of the giant robot anime premise, but instead of a plucky young teen who gets thrust into an intergalactic conflict, it's a 20-something fatso who could barely give half a damn about saving the universe but does it since he enjoys being able to smash things with the giant robot he modified. Sadly, the show is in a nearly inescapable limbo due to being written off for tax purposes, meaning a lot of shit would have to change if it were ever brought back.

As a non-burger it does strike me as odd, I've always seen the south as a really atmospheric setting with the bayous and forest and old architecture and southern gothic shit but perhaps it's creator/exec bias, they all seem to be from either New York or California.

Springfield is in northern Kentucky according to Behind the Laughter.

There have been multiple jokes over the course of the show that place it several different (impossible) locations. Springfield can't be in Kentucky because it's by the sea and has a port and Kentucky is landlocked. It doesn't, and shouldn't, have a definite location.

        See

Squidbillies exists because Williams St studios is in Atlanta, and Huckleberry Hound was made by people who grew up before WW2.

And before you say "KotH", Arlen is a suburb of Dallas which is the 'Midwest' part of the state. Houston is the 'Southern' part. Bunnicula is set in New Orleans, which is considered a 'black cultural centre' and so gets a pass.

      Anonymous

The only good thing about the South is the food. Imagine all of your negative stereotypes about Americans and hicks and double them. Anyone with a career in cartooning leaves and never comes back. The casual anti intellectualism and broad mass conformity wears you down. Really any small conformist community is like this but the South can almost fetishize it at times. Let me out. Texas is hell. Almost as hot too.
