Basically, George Lucas had dick all to do in the early 90's and didn't figure out an indy 4 then, and decided to go ruin star wars for everyone first.

I do believe a big part of why Ford worked so well was that he knew the script for Star Wars was a bit iffy in terms of dialogue. Indy on the other hand worked because it was a serial throwback and Ford, being as old as he is, had a good idea on how to spin a character like that.
