It's definitely a fad just like it, but Beanie Babies' decline came from the company making a massive blunder by announcing that they were going to stop making them, which gave people excuse to jump ship on a massive scale, rather than a regular decline. They quickly announced that they'd still continue making them but the damage was done, even though they're still making them today

They're relatively cheap to make and modify across franchises, which is important for casual toy collectors to have uniform figures across several franchises. Think Lego, but much more convenient for both the producer and collector
